If renting a car in Costa Rica to get here rent a FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. My hill is steep and slick if rainy. The rest of the country is also steep and slick when rainy. It may cost a few extra dollars but will provide you with access to many places(including a lot of the parks) you could not easily get to otherwise.

About Jeff Van Arsdell
Howdy! I am Kerry McCracken.Welcome to Cielomar. Mi Casa Es Su Casa!! I hope you find your stay here magical and enchanting and you carry home a memory of a lifetime. Heres a little about me. I am a native of Arizona, where I still live and work. I have been a Real Estate Broker in Arizona for many years, selling primarily ranches and land. I am now working on building alternative, sustainable ling projects and still occasionally selling property. I am working on a desert paradise here in Arizona trying to make it 100% solar and completely sustainable. As this project takes much time I am rarely down at Cielomar but am always enthralled when I get to stay there... and am grateful to share the magical experience I find CieloMar and the Lost World Preserve to be with you.. The rents support the preservation of the property .My real purpose has been to save as much critical habitat there as possible. Who doesn't like monkeys??Develpoment has crowded out their space and it is imperative that some of us care enough to preserve,as most lands there are private. The stewardship of this rare forest has been an experiment in private conservation for me. And to all those who have helped build and maintain the preserve my thanks go out to them.!!! Blessings Kerry

Why Jeff Van Arsdell chose Cantón Talamanca
Cielomar is the rarest and most spectacular wildlife watching retreat I have seen over many years in Costa Rica. It is a delight for animal lovers, and birders throughout the world. We are walking distance to the beaches yet worlds away in our secluded mountaintop lodge..A trip to town is fast and easy, with all local attractions readily available. Then come home to Cielomar and retreat to complete seclusion above the beach community. Come.gaze at the Caribbean ,birdwatch from the pool and hike through th last ancient primary forests.s..
What makes this Lodge unique
Most enchanting ocean view on the Caribe. cool breezes on our ridge make us five degrees cooler then the beach below!!! Overlooking the canyons of our preserve, you will find our wildlife viewing is as fine as the national parks, without the crowd. Birdwatch from the upstairs jungle room at the house, see monkeys play by the pool., or venture into the jungle on our cleared paths to see the shyer denizens of the rainforest. We are l close to the beach and village of Playa Chiquita.(.1/2 mile) and not far from town, yet we are secluded in our own jungle world. The cool pool could not be prettier or more refreshing and the house is full of artsy splashes and whimsical touches The views of the ocean and the canyons amaze and inspire the imagination. You will be forever enchanted!

A true Costa Rican experience!
It was just as advertised and just what the doctor ordered. We saw more wildlife from the house and pool than we did on excursions. Over the week, we saw white faced monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans, a chiranga, a sloth, tons of exotic birds and butterflies including a blue morpho butterfly and at least 7 very rare green macaws! The house was beautiful and spacious.
The road up was easy with the 4x4. I travelled with my daughtef and 2 nieces, ages 12-15. They had a blast and the caretaker, Jeff was excellent as well. I would come back in a heartbeat!
We have a good discount for return guests

Jungle, wildlife, and an ocean view...what more can you ask for?!
We had a most enjoyable time during our week at Cielomar. Each morning we sipped tea and drank coffee up in the canopy room, while watching for toucans and other birds. Jeff the caretaker’s smart dog, Lily, led us down the road and path to the Playa Chiquita beach, making a point to stop and look back to be sure we were following her. We loved snorkeling in the warm waters of Playa Chiquita and saw many beautiful tropical fish, urchins, sea cucumbers, and an eel. On the road up to the house, there were two sloths in a large tree and we stopped a number of times to watch them and take photos. Howler monkeys woke us up each morning and we saw them in the trees near the sloth. And, White-faced Capuchin monkeys came thru the trees just outside the kitchen window. We really enjoyed Chico the cat’s visits at the house and the pool. All around the home we saw neat katydids, large grasshoppers, other interesting insects and various lizards. And, in the evenings we heard the bats and watched them diving through the air for their dinner. The Internet came and went, but we understand that is typical in Costa Rica. All in all we had a great time at Cielomar!!
Thanks for sharing our little part of the world!
As beautiful as I had hoped
I want to start off by saying how happy we were to Visit Costa Rica and how beautiful the area we stayed. When I go on vacation I want to see as much as I can and do as many things as possible. I stayed 1 week and I am veryglad I chose this house. It is on the less developed side of the country.
The house is all hard wood and sits in the forest. We say 2 slothes, 2 agape? (Look like beavers with no tail), more birds than we could count and there were lots of monkeys you can here in the morning and night. You can see them as well but they didn't get close enough the week we were there. There were 5 of us. 2 of us stayed in the master bedroom on the 1st floor. Beautiful views and a great patio to drink coffee in the mornings. Our 3 kids stayed in the 2nd floor bedroom which had 2 beds in it. The 2nd floor is also the maif floor with the kitchen and dining room. They had plenty of dvd's to watch and plenty of towels and blankets so no need to take anything like that. The 2nd and 3 floors have ocean views as well. There is a large swimming pool that we used everyday. It has a large bar area with a sink with running water and a small grill. You could entertain a large amount of people with all the seating it had. I want to mention Lily and Chico. Lily is one of the best dogs I have ever been around and was one of our highlights to the trip. This dog actually had us follow her to the beach without leaving us. She took us down a small path that we probably would have never seen to a small private part of the beach. After she saw we were there she went off for the rest of the day to do whatever she wanted. We hiked that beach area and went back home after a couple of hours. Chico is the cat and a very loving friendly cat as well.
A couple of quick things to help you with your trip. There is 1 main road. It's almost impossible to get lost. When you leave the house and you get to the street, you can only go 2 ways. If you go right you go to Mananillo (Hope that"s how it's spelled) This is one of the best and beautiful beaches. It is kid friendly. Small waves. (VERY IMPORTANT if you have a kids) Small tourist shops and Maxies which is an overpriced restaurand. I would pick another in this area.
If you go left you have small cute restaurants and panaderias also some small bars and so on for a walk or bike trip. If you are in a car the Jaguar sanctuary is a 5 minute drive. I highly recommend this. YOU NEED A 4x4vehicle as well
Thanks guys..come see us again..we have a discount for annual visitors..kerry
We went with our 5 and 6 year old children. We all had a wonderful time. Lots of beach and pool time. Weather was amazing. Mark was very nice and helpful. house is much better than advertised. Lots of outdoor living space which also means lots of wildlife (inside and out 😊). Saw many howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, giant crickets, lizards, a giant snake, dart frogs, toucans, macaws etc... Highly recommend!
A Enchanting Escape
My family and I stayed here over the Thanksgiving holiday. There were 7 of us on this vacation, and we all fit very comfortably in the house, which was well stocked. It was amazing being able to walk to the beach from the house, as well as a local river on the back-end of the property. Jeff was great in showing us around the local area, on and off the property. There was so much adventure to be had, and it started every morning with the animals making noise and the sun shining in. We came during the rainy season, but the rain almost always held off until it was dark outside. One of the best parts of this house is that it was not only close to the jaguar rescue, but Howler and Capuchin monkeys were always very close, and you could watch them from the poolside. If you like adventure, but also enjoy a nice view when you relax, this is the perfect house! So sad that we had to leave, and definitely hope that we come back sometime soon!
The place is amazing the view The house
Two things that could be improved is the Wi-Fi and the telescope very rarely would the Wi-Fi work and the telescope not at all would be better if there was binoculars and an upgrade for the Wi-Fi Other than that it was amazing And would like to come back and stay again thank you very very much
Hey I am right with you
I just bought a new spotting scope that is top notch
But still in the states
As far as the wifi improvement is coming
As more folks build we can bring in landline
At this point I am grateful we have wifi
Even if it sometimes slow
Thanks for liking cielomar
Out the back door is our Lost World Preserve Explore deep canyons with maintained jungle trails winding along quiet creeks through the jungle canopy. One of the rare places in the area you can actually walk under and see the magical tropical canopy unfold around you. Our upstairs viewing room has a scope and an incredible 360 view of the surrounding rainforest. The pool is a great place to watch toucans, sloths monkeys and agoutis pass through the yard . Our lodge is located on a breezy hill about half mile above Playa Chiquita, a small secluded walk in beach favored by locals. and an easy stroll to world famous Punta Uva Beach. which has great surf breaks along the coast line and in clear weather a great reef to snorkel right off the shore. Take a dolphin tour and see rare species,go fishing with a local captain. There is a great wildlife rehabilitation center down the road. Several fantastic cocao tours are available within a couple of miles. There is a zipline down the beach. Bicycling is big, with rentals available all along the beach road..or rnt a golf cart. Some of Costa Ricas finest White Water Rafting (Pacuare and Reventazon Rivers) is nearby and trips are easily available including transportation from Puerto Viejo. Th nightlife in Puerto Viejo, the town nearest us( about five miles) is huge fun and always entertaining. Great food..good music..lots of dancing..a cultural melt that will bring a smile. The raggae and calypso shouldn't be missed.
