Why Anne Buckingham chose Brossac
I fell in love with this area when I first came to visit friends who had moved here from the UK in 2003, and my children and I have visited every year at least once a year ever since. When I first saw this house, it was only partly-built, and the builder had run out of money, but the views were so spectacular, I couldn't resist it. It's been a real labour of love, and now it is finished it needs to be enjoyed!

Fantastic holiday at a wonderful property
We had a great holiday at this wonderful property. There were 3 families, with lots of children and the house catered for us all. Spectacular views, amazing sunsets, and a lovely location. The house was spotlessly clean, stocked with everything you can think of and the children absolutely loved the pool.
Thank you so much for your lovely review, it was a pleasure to have you to stay. I hope we can welcome you back to le Ramard again!
Superb family holiday villa with all you need
We stayed at the villa with the whole family: 7 adults and 7 children. There was ample room for everyone, a brilliant open plan kitchen/dining area, balcony for breakfasts and sundowners and a grown-up sitting room for a haven of peace.
The salt water pool was amazing, the children's swimming came on leaps and bounds and it was a relief when the mercury hit 38 degrees!
The villa is close to some lovely French towns and villages with weekly markets, and not far from Bordeaux. Lots of caves selling pineau, cognac and wine nearby too.
A lovely house for a family celebration
My family, consisting of 7 adults and 7 children aged between 10 months and 6 and a half years, have just spent 2 weeks at Le Ramard for a 'big' birthday celebration. We had a wonderful time with the children spending most of the time in the gorgeous pool. We weren't very adventurous, but there is clearly a lot to do in the area. We ventured out to a couple of markets and to two lakes.
The house has enormous bedrooms and has adaptable sleeping accommodation. It is very well equipped and the two dishwashers were a godsend! I especially loved the 'adults only' room where one could escape to for a bit of peace to do a jigsaw or read! The children had their own playroom so were quite happy that we had our own space too.
It was extremely hot 38*C when we arrived and the portable air conditioners were not really up to the job at those abnormal temperatures. However, one could always cool off in the pool!
The house manager was really helpful and nothing seemed to be too much trouble to make our stay comfortable.
I would thoroughly recommend this property.
Dear Annie, I'm so happy to hear you had a great holiday at le Ramard, it was lovely to have you all to stay, and I hope your birthday celebration was everything you expected.
I hope we might welcome some or all of you back again one day.
Our family had a great time in Brossac. The pool was especially appreciated with the weather being very hot indeed whilst we were there. As described there were plenty of pool and garden toys provided. The large garden was also enjoyed with the children picking blackberries, strawberries and a few beans. All rooms were spacious, the house was well equipped and very clean. We enjoyed visiting the local lake and the music evenings were fun. All in all a very good place to choose for a family holiday with 7 adults and 4 children. Plenty to do in the surrounding area to suit all tastes.
Thank you for your lovely review, it was a pleasure to have you all to stay, and I’m so glad you had a good time. Congratulations again to T&M, it was great fun helping them organise the surprise vow renewal celebration!
Second visit to this lovely house
This was our second time here, and we had another lovely holiday. The weather wasn't all that great, but there was still plenty to do.
The house was immaculately clean, as was the swimming pool. The pool got well-used, despite the weather. There's a new property manager, and I think the level of service is even better than last time.
It's a really comfortable house, with everything you need, and lots of things you didn't even know you needed. The only thing I could think of suggesting is perhaps having a table tennis table, but there is one at Etang Vallier, so I'm being very picky.
We went to Bonne Humeur in Chalais for a delicious steak. It's our favourite place for supper in the area. Christine and Fernando looked after us very well, as always. We also went to the lake on one of the sunny afternoons, and went ten pin bowling in Angouleme on one of the rainy ones!
We had another great holiday here and we will definitely be back again, it's a real home from home.
I'm very happy to hear you had another lovely holiday at le Ramard, it was so good to see you back again, and we look forward to welcoming you back next time.
We had the most fabulous stay at the very well equipped farmhouse. It is very quiet and calm and peaceful. The pool was lovely and clean and fresh and entertained all of us (but mostly the children) from dawn to dusk. The house is clean, well presented and has lots of space. There is lots to see and do at the local towns and villages and I highly recommend going out to lunch in Chalais and having the 'plat du jour' or visiting on market day. The butcher in Brossac does some delicious meat to have on the BBQ at the house. A trip out to St Emillion (about an hour away) is well worth it. But mostly I would recommend a glass of wine and sitting on the terrace watching the fabulous sun sets. We have come back very relaxed having had a thoroughly lovely holiday. Thank you.
Thank you for your lovely review, and I'm delighted to hear you had such a lovely time.
It was great to have you all to stay, and I hope we might welcome you back again one day.
The village is about five minutes’ walk and has a market and plenty of shops and other services: banking, pharmacy, post office, hairdressers, tabac, bakeries, convenience store, butcher, garage and petrol station and a very nice pizza restaurant.
The village centre also has 2 tennis courts that can be rented by popping into the Pharmacy. For more intense shopping, the town of Chalais is only about ten minute’s drive, and has a good Intermarché supermarket, and all the usual shops you’d expect in a small town, as well as a superb restaurant called le Relais du Chateau, perched high above the town, and a very friendly restaurant called la Bonne Humeur in the centre where Fernando does a mean steak on the outdoor grill and a fabulous creme brulee for pudding!
Ten minutes’ walk from the house in the other direction from the village, you'll also find the Etang Vallier lake complex, where there is a lovely man-made beach surrounding the lake; you can sunbathe, swim, fish or picnic, and for a very small fee can hire kayaks to use on the lake, play mini golf, table tennis or squash, swim in the indoor pool, little children can play on the equipment or you can have a drink, ice cream, meal or snack at the bar/restaurant. On Friday there is happy hour where all the activities are free so the children can play while you relax in the bar, and chat to the very friendly locals, French, British ex-pats and a few Dutch and other assorted nationalities.
There are biking and hiking trails all around through gorgeous countryside, and many of these also have little adventure trails with monkey bars, climbing frames etc., for children.
The Dordogne, Charente Maritime, and Aquitaine are each no more than 15 minutes away. It is a beautiful rural (or, by French standards, semi-rural) area, with woodland, farms, vines and sunflowers everywhere you look. Lovely towns like Bordeaux, Cognac, St Emilion, and Angoulème are all within very easy access by car, and there is a huge amount to do in the area, if you’ve had enough of relaxation; historical areas to visit, museums and galleries and a multitude of water-parks, sports facilities and children’s activities within a short drive. There are many excellent restaurants in the area, some incredibly good value for money. The weather in the area is amongst the best that can be found in France, with the second highest annual level of sunshine in the country.
