Fantastic View of all of Rome

  • 4 of 5

Our three generation family of five spent 8 nights here while visiting Rome. We really enjoyed this apartment.

The apartment offered plenty of space for everyone to spread out and be comfortable.

The three patio's provided fantastic views all over Rome, this was particularly magical at night when the buildings were all lit up. Additionally, one patio has herbs which we used for cooking as well as a clothesline for laundry.

The apartment, which occupies floors 5 & 6 of the building is located up on a hill near the Quirenale Steps and receives strong breezes throughout the day. The bedrooms also are air conditioned for good sleeping. There is an elevator which is convenient for help bringing luggage and groceries upstairs. The architecture is unique, open, and makes for a fun place to stay.

Adriana, the coordinator for Commendable Rentals could not have been more helpful. She is a wealth of information and went out of her way on many occasions to help us organize airport transfers, ferry rides, and train tickets.

The only two minor drawbacks to the apartment are the upstairs bathroom, which is in dire need of an updating and the kitchen which is completely functional but could also use a little updating.

We found the property to be centrally located to all we wanted to cover. The roof top terrace has a breathtaking view of Rome. Highly recommend.

All about the view

  • 3 of 5

We found this Rome apartment quite different from our last three experiences renting private homes.

It was a much larger layout, more spacious, and the views at night are stunning; especially from the two large terraces off living room and master bedroom, In the daytime, it was bright with a lot of natural light.

On a practical level, it was challenging to get ready in the morning and prepare to retire at night in the extremely dated and small master bath. We found it hard to climb into the 1930's shower/tub combo w/o shower curtain or grab bars, and a big mirror on the other side of the tub. Even with a shower curtain, it wouldn't have made much difference, everything is really old and tight fitting in there. Ripped carpet and dark wood paneling don't help. It wasn't what we were expecting in a penthouse apartment. By day 2, we began sharing the downstairs remodeled bathroom with my niece and her husband. Putting on make-up in the morning was a challenge, there is no counter space on the dimly lit vanity and no table or dresser in the master bedroom, no closet, just a free standing plastic clothes rack and some cubicles.

Overall, our bed was comfortable . The space designated a.c. in the bedrooms were a welcome relief from the day's heat. Unfortunately, at night, the master bedroom is quite loud from street noise, even when windows are all closed and the a.c. is running.

Another surprise was the antique elevator that goes to the 5th floor - 1900 bird cage elevator! small but efficient; like a grand old lady, she takes time to get there, and it certainly beats walking up 5 flights of stairs. The elevator is shared with the guests from the hotel next door. There is a small grocery store across the street that's run by a friendly Indian gentleman and the salad kiosk next door to him has good grab and go.

Note: If you intend on cooking - the kitchen in this apartment is as dated as the master bath, but if you are just making coffee [a Keurig is provided with pods] it's of no consequence.

The apartment is spacious, dated, funky, needs TLC, but this place is all about location and views. You can walk almost anywhere.

This apartment shows much better at night, and it can be useful for a large family WITHOUT small children. The WiFi signal is strong, the hotel next door is friendly and Adriana the young lady who will let you in is helpful. For our family of four, it was certainly a once in a lifetime experience.

Owner's Response: Dear Corey, Of course, we do not know what your last three experiences were or where you stayed before. I am glad at the end of your review, that it was a successful, once in a life-time experience, though your rating is quite different from almost all of our last guests who have rated it 5 star. “Domitilla” the apartment is an acclaimed piece of architecture, and it also serves as a home.part of the year to its owner. Though the building is a few centuries old, which is what we all love about Rome, the interior was a much featured show piece from the 1960’s, ( not 30’s) when it was featured in many architectural and contemporary magazines like Life. It hosted famous guests like Andy Warhol, and a whole artistic International circle. The layout is striking with it’s magnificent wrap-around terraces on two levels, and the living area well-suited to entertaining and family gathering. The bathrooms are not modern, but they have been updated, and they are part of the history. The Air-Conditioning is brand new, and much appreciated. We can see about adding a dressing table to the master that you mention. If you have not travelled much in Europe then the typical European elevator in historic buildings, might, indeed surprise you, but it sounds like you, too, fell under the spell of it’s charm. Yes, it is so much about location and in credible views from magnificent views from magnificent terraces.. And yes, you can walk almost anywhere, the great pleasure of life in Rome. Thank you for staying with us.

Great views, wonderful accomodation

  • 5 of 5

"We have had a wonderful time here at Domitilla! It was perfect for our party of 5. We were so surprised at the nearness to every attraction we wanted to see. We walked almost everywhere. I will recommend this apartment and hope to return. I did throw 3 coins in the Trevi Fountain and had my husband do the same. Thank you for offering a beautiful location. Lisha and Colin

Stunning location, could do with a little TLC

  • 4 of 5

Stunning location in Central Rome with views of the Vatican, Pantheon, Palazzo Venezia. The apartment is a really good size, with a small elevator leading you to the penthouse. As long as you realize you are staying in someone's home and not an upscale hotel, this is definitely a great choice for your Roman getaway.

I believe the apartment was built in 1969 and in places it looks like it. The sofas are low and very soft. Light switches are in very strange places, often at shin level. The carpeting is worn, especially on the stairs. There is a great, fully equipped, kitchen with a dishwasher and a good washing machine.

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing. In fact, the interior architecture is indeed from the 1960's and designed by one of the period's most famous architects, husband to current owner. It was a great showcase for his work and appeared widely in all sorts of magazines and architectural journals of the period. The home- and it is a home, which is part of its charm- is kept with a great deal of loving care, but also with an interest in preserving this architectural and interior design heritage. Afterall, that is what Rome is all about; 2000 years of architectural treasures, and layer upon layer of history. The terraces , as you point out offer stunning views, and an opportunity to experience Rome's roof tops as only a fortunate few can.

Lovely apartment with great breezes

  • 5 of 5

My family and I enjoyed the apartment very much. When we opened the large windows through the living area, we were treated to great breezes. Adriana (who was our contact) was superbly helpful and responsive.

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay. The terrace which gives you views of all of Rome, is indeed magic, for its gentle breezes, as well as its magnificent vistas. Of course, the neighborhood is also the best. As is Adriana! Thank you for writing and do come back. Susan Doull and the Commendable Rentals Team
