"If we were any closer to heaven, we'd be talking to St. Peter" said one guest about Great Turtle Villa.
Tucked into the lush mountainside above Coral Bay, behind an electronic gate, Great Turtle Villa is a casually elegant vacation villa with four bedrooms in two two-story pavilions bisected by a pool.
Rent 1, 2, 3 or all 4 bedrooms while enjoying access to the full house, decks and pool. Honeymoon couple? Rent 1 bedroom. Girls' getaway? Rent all 4 bedrooms. Rates vary depending on the number of bedrooms booked.
Great Turtle Villa is accessed via all paved roads, a rare amenity on St. John and very welcome in a tropical downpour. It is located in the comfortable, upscale neighborhood of Upper Carolina. Surrounding homes are on large lots hidden by lush foliage which provides lots of privacy. Enter Great Turtle Villa's drive through an electronic gate which not only adds extra privacy and security but it also keeps the wild donkeys out!
The front door opens onto the larger pavilion's main level which contains the attractive living and dining areas and the fully-equipped gourmet kitchen with a marble-topped work table and breakfast bar. In the living area, a flat-screen TV, stereo, DVD, plus music and video libraries, provide indoor entertainment. The fully-equipped kitchen boasts stainless appliances, granite counters and enough dishes, bakeware and pans to satisfy the most particular chef. Hand-polished mahogany screened french doors open onto spacious shaded decks with cushy rockers and inviting chaises perfect for enjoying the cool tradewinds. An outdoor walkway above the pool and courtyard garden leads to the other pavilion with its Yellow Bedroom suite. An open staircase heads down beside the garden, passing exquisite orchids and a stately coconut palm, as it leads to the pool level with three more bedrooms and a home office.
All four equal size bedrooms open onto large decks with dazzling views, have AC, adjoining baths and walk-in closets making Great Turtle Villa a perfect vacation rental for friends or families to share. No one gets stuck in the "back bedroom with no view". The pool, just steps from your bedroom, is perfect, from a morning dip to a midnight swim. The lush courtyard garden ensures total privacy for swimming or sunning on the deck. When children are present, to keep them safe, self-locking gates around the pool can be utilized. The home office is equipped with high-speed internet, WiFi, a printer, fax and copier. There is also a small refrigerator and coffee maker to keep poolside snacks and beverages or enjoy that morning cup of coffee on the deck.
Just minutes from fabulous National Park beaches and the funky bars and restaurants of Coral Bay, this villa's central location allows easy access to both sides of St. John. Cruz Bay is only a 20 minute drive away and all the best hiking trails are within easy reach.
Everything about Great Turtle invites you to relax. Spend the day in the cushy rockers on the deck or let your cares slip away as you lounge by the pool. The Caribbean-style decor offers a comfortable mix of inviting antiques and pleasant elegance. The villa's lush tropical gardens are filled with birds-of-paradise, scarlet bougainvillea and rainbow-colored hibiscus. Slice a papaya for breakfast or pick your own lime for cocktails. But it's the awe-inspiring view - sparkling white sails bobbing on turquoise water in Coral Bay, shimmering islands on the horizon, the ever-changing greens on the verdant hills of Bordeaux Mountain, the speckled browns of sugar mill ruins peeking through the foliage of Carolina Valley - that you will carry forever in the memory of your visit to St. John and Great Turtle Villa!
As one guest from Connecticut said, "I travel the world for my work and have seen many beautiful places, but, I must say, your home and the view of Coral Bay tops them all!"

We had sailed in the Virgin Islands for 15 years with our 4 children and came to love St. John. When our children started having children of their own, we decided it was time to get land based and built a home that would be comfortable for all of us. Now we have 10 grandchildren who all come to visit us in St. John and have learned to love it here as much as we do.
We would stay there again and would recommend it to other large groups. Each bedroom is separate so no one disturb anyone else in the morning if they are a early riser.
We visit St. John once or sometimes twice a year and this was our first time staying at the Great Turtle Villa. The villa was perfect - amazing views over Coral Bay, very clean, beautifully furnished and decorated, kitchen well appointed, and nice provided accessories like beach chairs and coolers for a day at the beach. It's not uncommon for the salty humid air to wear things out quickly, but everything at the villa was in top notch shape. What was also greatly appreciated was that the house windows and doors keep a tight seal, cooling trade wind breezes get through, but the bugs don't. That meant a lot to members of our party. The roads up to the Villa are all paved and easy to navigate. We truly enjoyed the villa will be rebooking it for sure in the future.
Great Turlte Villa is a wonderful home in a lovely location. Situated on top of hill/mountain overlooking Coral Bay, the views are amazing. Sunrises can be viewed to the east. Night time skies are filled with stars and the
Milky Way is clearly visible. Our family also enjoyed watching the shooting stars and hearing the nightly serenades from the crickets and tree frogs.
The house is comfortably furnished and quite inviting. Our family of seven, 4 of which are teens, all enjoyed the space and accomodations. The kitchen is well equipped. We were able to cook for our family easily with all that is provided.
The hills around Coral Bay are a great location, quiet and serene. Some mornings there is some noise from traffic below due to deliveries to Coral Bay. The drive to the beaches is convenient. Route 20 is beautiful road to the most popular beaches. Colombo Smoothies is a great refueling stop along the way. And for a delicious reasonably priced meal, checkout North Shore Deli .... The sandwiches are delicious!
Great Turtle Villa provided a wonderful safe setting and space for our family. Thank you to the owners and managers!
For our first multi-generation vacation, I knew Great Turtle would be the perfect location. We spent time here a few years ago with another couple, and this time we took FULL advantage of its amenities. Grandparents claimed the breezy main floor bedroom (never once even thought about running the AC). Parents and kids took the downstairs bedrooms. The pool area is gated, which gave us peace of mind about kids running about on their own. Kids LOVED the pool and hammock. OK, they loved having cable TV, too (OK, OK, sometimes we needed a rest).
The kitchen is fully equipped for any type of cooking, but I especially appreciated the kid-friendly cups and dishes. The property manager was attentive when we needed help.
We spent every spare moment enjoying the view of Coral Bay on the back deck. And when we went to the beach, we appreciated how close we were to both the North Shore beaches, e.g., Cinnamon, and the beaches beyond Coral Bay, e.g., Salt Pond.
We found Coral Bay's restaurants to be first rate (Miss Lucy's was a favorite) and Dolphin Market there to have everything we needed.
After a few tries, we even perfected backing out of the driveway. All of St John's roads are an adventure in themselves, so if you're a skittish driver, go to St Croix. You'll want a 4 wheel drive vehicle and a driver who can remember to 'keep left'.
Beautiful house, lovely furnishings, delicious pool. Everything you need to feel like you are truly on vacation. Enjoy.
This was our 7th trip to St. John -- and the BEST villa we've found. Here's why:
1. Beautifully decorated
2. Great location
3. Terrific views
4. Privacy for each of the 4 bedrooms
5. Well-equipped kitchen
6. Everything you need for day outings: cooler, beach chairs, beach towels
7. Nice pool that gets sun all day
8. Comfortable furniture, in particularly for enjoying the views from the deck/veranda
and 9. Beautifully landscaped!
We can stop looking; we've found the perfect villa!
We had spent the day in St. Johns when staying in St. Thomas 5 years ago. It had always been a dream to go back and spend more time on the island. After extensive research I came upon this exquisite property. Kathy was prompt in responding to our questions. The property was beyond our expectations. Tastefully decorated and anything needed for a day at the beach were right at our fingertips. Every room was clean and comfortable with spectacular views of Coral Bay. The bedroom retreats for my husband and I and each of our young adult children was ideal and gave all of us our own space. I was able to rise early and sip my coffee on the deck while enjoying the sunrise while my children were able to sleep in without being disturbed. After enjoying St. Johns pristine beaches, we would enjoy our cocktails on the deck while taking the views of Coral Bay. Cannot wait to go back!! Your restaurant recommendations were excellent. Thank you for sharing your beautiful property. The Family from Mass.
Great Turtle Villa is centrally located in the Upper Carolina area of Coral Bay on the 'backside' of St. John. This peaceful mountainside retreat basks in tropical breezes all day long and the paved roads make the climb easy. Coral Bay is considered the quiet, more funky side of St. John. It is close to the spectacular National Park Beaches - an easy 5 minutes from the house - as are some of the best hiking trails in the Park. Coral Bay is home to the famous Skinny Legs Bar, a must-see in the Caribbean. There are several other wonderful restaurants nearby. Cruz Bay, the main town, is just 20 minutes away.
Other Activities: kayaking, hiking, shopping, beachcombing
