A Post Office as a vacation rental? Yes - Absolutely. This spectacular renovated building started as a barn on a nearby island in the 1800's. The downstairs of this historic building has been the working local post office since 1931. Upstairs, insulated from any noise of a small village meeting place, is the open loft style apartment, with soaring cathedral ceilings. Designed and decorated like a historic Maine cottage. Comfortably furnished, this property is the perfect romantic getaway. A great location, with amenities close by. The modern, cozy kitchen will support your cooking needs. The loft and cupola are private retreats for children in your party, just like sleeping in a tree house! The views from the cupola are panoramic, with a peek of the ocean in the distance. There's a private deck off the back offering beautiful views, where you can eat dinner and watch the sunset. Next door is the 'world's best' general store with 'award winning' breakfasts and lunches served daily.
The family photo above is from a sunset cruise in Rockland Harbor, on the windjammer 'A Morning in Maine'. My wife and I are both high school art teachers in Massachusetts. We love fixing up old houses and especially love Owls Head Maine!
Doug & Leah Johnson purchased this apartment in 2008
The cottage has a lot of charm and character, decorated with artwork, antiques and treasures found on the beach. We are collectors of everything, specializing on finding heart shaped rocks, driftwood and sea glass found on Coopers Beach.
A two person kayak and a canoe are stored under the cottage and can be launched down at the beach. We recently added a beautiful and private granite patio in the back, where there's a grill and fire pit for roasting marshmallows.
We had a ball! The beaches, restaurants, and back deck where our favorite places to hang out! Thank, you thank you for the bottle of wine. How did you know? That is what we put in the baskets for our out of town guests!
Truly, you have a wonderful get away! Thank you for letting us be part of the furniture for a moment!!! We had a great stay! Loved the store next door!!!
Doug and Leah,
We enjoyed your wonderful, comfortable, interesting and unique home so very much! My husband and daughter loved the furnishings, comfortable beds and bedding and all the unique items (owls, heart stones, antiques) that make this rental one of a kind. Right down the road is the Owls Head Light House and a quintessential little fishing harbor with lobster boats and traps. Our daughter loved sleeping in the bunks in the cupola! What an experience. We woke early to watch the sunrise from up there....and then went back to peaceful sleep. Thank you for sharing your unique home in its magical place. We've told so many friends about your home, though I'd like to keep it my secret place. 😊We will be back for sure!
The post office is awesome!! The charm is out of this world and the grounds are gorgeous! You are still close to everything, but far enough away to have peace! Owl's Head light house is right down the street and the views are incredible! Highly recommend!
I can't say enough good things about this place. My wife and I decided to spend our first wedding anniversary in Maine and stumbled upon Doug's place on HomeAway. The property was even better than we expected (and we had high expectations based on the photos and description!!!). The location, 5 minutes outside of Rockland, was perfect. We spent the days hiking around the area, visiting Rockland and the Farnsworth Museum and the nights cooking seafood in the well stocked kitchen. Jess's Seafood Market is only a few miles away and has an excellent selection of fresh fish and lobster. Communicating with Doug was smooth; he has really made it quite easy to access his property and provides a lot of good recommendations on restaurants, activities, etc., during your stay. Simply put, we will be celebrating our anniversary there every year for as long as Doug continues to rent it out. Do it...you won't regret it!
The Post Office was absolutely wonderful. Perfect location for exploring mid-coast Maine and has everything you need. Doesn't hurt that the General Store next door serves delicious treats! Looking forward to our next visit!
a unique and charming adaptation of the space including its challenges creating an "Owl's nest" to return to after a day enjoying Maritime Maine. There are creative touches everywhere-a lovely garden with spots to sit and relax after visiting Rockland, Rockport, Camden ad the panorama from Camden Hill not to mention Owls Head itself. Will be recommending it to friends and family.
Perfect getaway destination situated within walking distance of Owls Head harbor and light with beautiful gardens to explore and a sun deck for grilling! The General Store next door seems to have most of what is needed (though it is closed Sunday & Mondays). Sleeping accommodation is fun with beds in the loft and cupola...great for families with kids 8+ who enjoy climbing ladders and sleeping under the stars.
Kayak and sailing trips; Owl's Head Transportation Museum; Farnsworth Art Museum, Wyeth Museum; Owl's Head Lighthouse; Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse; Camden Harbor and State Park; ferries available nearby to Monhegan Island, Isleboro, Matinicus and Vinalhaven; nationally known lobster festival, blues festival, boats and harbor show; tennis and golf at nearby Samoset Resort. Primo, one of the mid-coast's finest restaurants, complete with organic produce, and locally raised meat is right around the corner.
