A Post Office as a vacation rental? Yes - Absolutely. This spectacular renovated building started as a barn on a nearby island in the 1800's. The downstairs of this historic building has been the working local post office since 1931. Upstairs, insulated from any noise of a small village meeting place, is the open loft style apartment, with soaring cathedral ceilings. Designed and decorated like a historic Maine cottage. Comfortably furnished, this property is the perfect romantic getaway. A great location, with amenities close by. The modern, cozy kitchen will support your cooking needs. The loft and cupola are private retreats for children in your party, just like sleeping in a tree house! The views from the cupola are panoramic, with a peek of the ocean in the distance. There's a private deck off the back offering beautiful views, where you can eat dinner and watch the sunset. Next door is the 'world's best' general store with 'award winning' breakfasts and lunches served daily.
The family photo above is from a sunset cruise in Rockland Harbor, on the windjammer 'A Morning in Maine'. My wife and I are both high school art teachers in Massachusetts. We love fixing up old houses and especially love Owls Head Maine!
Doug & Leah Johnson purchased this apartment in 2008
The cottage has a lot of charm and character, decorated with artwork, antiques and treasures found on the beach. We are collectors of everything, specializing on finding heart shaped rocks, driftwood and sea glass found on Coopers Beach.
A two person kayak and a canoe are stored under the cottage and can be launched down at the beach. We recently added a beautiful and private granite patio in the back, where there's a grill and fire pit for roasting marshmallows.
We had a ball! The beaches, restaurants, and back deck where our favorite places to hang out! Thank, you thank you for the bottle of wine. How did you know? That is what we put in the baskets for our out of town guests!
Truly, you have a wonderful get away! Thank you for letting us be part of the furniture for a moment!!! We had a great stay! Loved the store next door!!!
Great rental. Great relaxing area in Maine. Beatiful sights to see! The swimming quarry is a must! Fun road trip to Fort Knox. This is a great area with plenty to do. Crescent beach is the best. Especially at low tide.
General store is next store, very busy place.
We visited Owls Head Maine for our first time and the Owls Head Village Post Office was such a pleasant experience that we just can’t wait to go back. The adorable apartment above an “Old Fashioned” Post Office was filled with rustic treasures, nautical accents, the most amazing collection of heart shaped rocks and quirky owls throughout! It was exactly what we needed to get away from our normally hectic and stress filled lives.
The moment we walked in we felt at home. The Owls Head Post Office is so welcoming, and we knew we had made the perfect choice for our long awaited vacation. The back porch was our favorite spot each morning, as we watched the sun rise over the trees, the birds fluttering around the feeders, a woodpecker high above us, and all the while listening to the sounds of the harbor in the distance. The garden below was filled with beautiful flowers and greenery and next to the door was the most amazing apple tree that stretched along the side of the house.
We explored the local towns and their charming shops and eateries each day, and found the most magical views of the ocean from atop Mount Battie in Camden and Cadillac Mountain in the Acadia National Forest near Bar Harbor.
A big thank you to Doug and Leah for such a peaceful and relaxing getaway!
This well designed living space is a charming vacation rental and a perfect perch from which to explore Mid Coast Maine. We were greeted with beautiful flowers and wine.
The back deck overlooks a really exquisite garden and is a lovely spot to read during the day and to view the stars at night. The open living space is inviting and cozy. Rockland and Camden offer many dining choices and Jess's Market has the best local fish I've ever seen. The Rockland Farmer's Market is a must. Owl's Head Lighthouse and beach is a ten minute walk. Birch Point Beach is a ten minute drive. You can't go wrong with this place! We were very sorry to leave. The owner is a pleasure to work with. Highly recommended!
This property sits above the Owls Head Post Office. We visited with our two grandchildren and found it well suited for our needs. It has an open plan and is well equipped for cooking. The owners have made a point of making guests feel welcome and at home. The entire place is decorated with thought which makes the stay even more enjoyable.
We have been renting homes for over thirty years in Maine and this one stands out for uniqueness.
The gardens are lovely. The kids loved the frog pond and Owls Head is a great place to use as a base to visit other areas such as Rockland, Camden and Belfast
A beautiful and restful getaway. Everything was perfect at the Post Office- clean, comfortable, quiet, and artistic. We spent a long weekend here and really did not want to leave. The property is just removed enough to be quiet, but not far away from anything. The set up is thoughtful, making our stay effortless. The owners lovely to deal with. I think that we will be back again. With luck, it will be a much longer stay.
After the success of our vacation at the Post Office last year, everyone in our family couldn't wait to get back there. The girls ran straight to the frog pond and we all love to admire your shrubs and plants with birds and butterflies. I love your landscaping and design sense. It is all so colorful but comfortable inside and out. We swim at Birch Point Beach andclimb the rocks. This year we cycled to Crescent beach almost daily . We enjoyed the Farnsworth, the Grasshopper and all the boutique stores. We discovered Lulu's and slurped gourmet icecreams everynight with incredible combinations of Blueberry Sage sorbetto, lemon mint, pear and blue cheese..yumm!! We had to return to the secret quarry again which was as spectacular and secluded as ever,Last year we enjoyed ferry and hiking Monhegan. We took in the Transportation Museum this year which was surprisingly interesting fo rus all and not just Dad. Our 1/2 hour Scenic Flight with Penobscot Air was spectacular, flying over the islands to Vinal Haven and along the coast, $160 for up to 6 people we felt was great value and so memorable, So besides the fantastic array of activities and things to see and do in Owl's Head, it is the comfort of this quaint but efficient charming little apartment that draws us back.. I would highly recommend to families, artists, honeymooners and more.... you will not be disappointed!
