Owls Head Village Post Office

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,200 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 1 Full Bathroom, Sleeps 6 Maximum

A Post Office as a vacation rental? Yes - Absolutely. This spectacular renovated building started as a barn on a nearby island in the 1800's. The downstairs of this historic building has been the working local post office since 1931. Upstairs, insulated from any noise of a small village meeting place, is the open loft style apartment, with soaring cathedral ceilings. Designed and decorated like a historic Maine cottage. Comfortably furnished, this property is the perfect romantic getaway. A great location, with amenities close by. The modern, cozy kitchen will support your cooking needs. The loft and cupola are private retreats for children in your party, just like sleeping in a tree house! The views from the cupola are panoramic, with a peek of the ocean in the distance. There's a private deck off the back offering beautiful views, where you can eat dinner and watch the sunset. Next door is the 'world's best' general store with 'award winning' breakfasts and lunches served daily.

About Doug & Leah Johnson

The family photo above is from a sunset cruise in Rockland Harbor, on the windjammer 'A Morning in Maine'. My wife and I are both high school art teachers in Massachusetts. We love fixing up old houses and especially love Owls Head Maine!

Doug & Leah Johnson purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Doug & Leah Johnson chose MidCoast and Penobscot Bay

The cottage has a lot of charm and character, decorated with artwork, antiques and treasures found on the beach. We are collectors of everything, specializing on finding heart shaped rocks, driftwood and sea glass found on Coopers Beach.

What makes this apartment unique

A two person kayak and a canoe are stored under the cottage and can be launched down at the beach. We recently added a beautiful and private granite patio in the back, where there's a grill and fire pit for roasting marshmallows.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hello Doug,

We had a ball! The beaches, restaurants, and back deck where our favorite places to hang out! Thank, you thank you for the bottle of wine. How did you know? That is what we put in the baskets for our out of town guests!

Truly, you have a wonderful get away! Thank you for letting us be part of the furniture for a moment!!! We had a great stay! Loved the store next door!!!

A Memorable vacation

We had a Great time at the Owls Head Village Post Office. Beautiful Gardens, awe inspired with the surroundings. Creative, Clean, cozy and inviting. Would love a repeat there again, possible same time next year!! General Store is right next door to make you a hearty breakfast or their signature fabulous Burgers. Also explore Crescent Beach down the street and other area villages, each has their own unique style. Explore this area of Maine, came home totally relaxed and at ease. Well worth the trip!

Great place to stay. Away enough from any noises, yet only a couple of miles to town. Great area to walk to the lighthouse! I would rent it again.

Wonderful vacations in Maine!!!

  • 5 of 5

Dear Doug,

We enjoyed to be in your house, and we really appreciate it all the recommendations you gave us.

It is a really beautiful house, with very attractive decoration, and very comfortable.

We went to the beaches close to the Post Office, to Candem for the firework of the 4th of July, and enjoyed our visit to Boothbay where we took a trip for whale watching.

It was our first stay in Maine. But we really want to come back!

Whimsical and filled with so many details to discover

  • 5 of 5

My only regret for our stay is that we went so late in the season, so many of the local restaurants were already closed or on off season hours, however the apartment is so amazing, I was sad to leave after only 2 nights.

The kids wanted to buy the home so we can stay forever. They thoroughly enjoyed the bunk beds under the roof.

Everything from decor to deck to garden, plus the walk-ability to nearby attractions was fantastic and we definitely want to return some time during the season for a longer stay.

An amazing stay in a truly unique home!

  • 5 of 5

Doug and Leah,

We enjoyed your wonderful, comfortable, interesting and unique home so very much! My husband and daughter loved the furnishings, comfortable beds and bedding and all the unique items (owls, heart stones, antiques) that make this rental one of a kind. Right down the road is the Owls Head Light House and a quintessential little fishing harbor with lobster boats and traps. Our daughter loved sleeping in the bunks in the cupola! What an experience. We woke early to watch the sunrise from up there....and then went back to peaceful sleep. Thank you for sharing your unique home in its magical place. We've told so many friends about your home, though I'd like to keep it my secret place. 😊򒠠We will be back for sure!

The post office is awesome!! The charm is out of this world and the grounds are gorgeous! You are still close to everything, but far enough away to have peace! Owl's Head light house is right down the street and the views are incredible! Highly recommend!
