A Post Office as a vacation rental? Yes - Absolutely. This spectacular renovated building started as a barn on a nearby island in the 1800's. The downstairs of this historic building has been the working local post office since 1931. Upstairs, insulated from any noise of a small village meeting place, is the open loft style apartment, with soaring cathedral ceilings. Designed and decorated like a historic Maine cottage. Comfortably furnished, this property is the perfect romantic getaway. A great location, with amenities close by.
The modern, cozy kitchen will support all of your cooking needs. Plenty of inside dining areas, as well as dining al fresco on the deck, right next to the kitchen. The loft and cupola are private retreats for children in your party, just like sleeping in a tree house! The views from the cupola are panoramic, with a peek of the ocean in the distance. There's a private deck off the back offering beautiful views of our gardens, where you can eat dinner and watch the sunset. The gardens and expansive lawn, lead to a small pond where you can sit next to the fire pit and roast marshmallows. Next door is the 'world's best' general store with 'award winning' breakfasts and lunches served daily.
Owls Head is a secluded and scenic buoy and lobster pot dotted peninsula, one of Maine's authentic waterfront colonies. Centrally located in midcoast Maine, it is the perfect starting point for day-trip adventures. Rockland is only 5 minutes away and 15 minutes to Camden, both offer great shopping, museums, art galleries and festivals. Only 3 minutes down the road is our favorite (award winning) farm to table restaurant, Primo's. There are so many amazing restaurants and lobster shacks close by.
Turns out, you can get there and almost anywhere from here!

About Doug & Leah Johnson
The family photo above is from a sunset cruise in Rockland Harbor, on the windjammer 'A Morning in Maine'. My wife and I are both high school art teachers in Massachusetts. We love fixing up old houses and especially love Owls Head Maine!
Doug & Leah Johnson purchased this Apartment in 2008
Why Doug & Leah Johnson chose Owls Head
The cottage has a lot of charm and character, decorated with artwork, antiques and treasures found on the beach. We are collectors of everything, specializing on finding heart shaped rocks, driftwood and sea glass found on various beaches close to the Post Office.
What makes this Apartment unique
2, two person kayaks are available to use with this rental. You can dolly them down the hill and launch them next to the Lobster Wharf. Cruise through Owls Head Bay and 5 minutes out to the left is the Owls Head Lighthouse. 10-15 minutes out to the right are two deserted islands to visit and explore. Our favorite is Sheep's Island, which has an expansive sandy beach, which is easy to land on. If your lucky, you will have the entire island to yourselves. The views back to the Camden Hills is to die for!

This was probably the best place we've stayed at from Home Away. The Post Office was so cool, from the decorations to the Cupola. Our 2 kids loved sleeping up there with the amazing view of the backyard and the cabin and pond out back. The location is perfect so close to Rockland and Camden. The kitchen is a good size although we ate out every night. We also used the kayaks to explore the islands. Having a glass or 2 of wine on the deck at night was also great looking out at the amazing gardens. Thanks so much for the bottle of wine, such a thoughtful gesture. We will definitely book here again.
nice location in owls head maine
I knew it was winter and expected cold so that was fine. The heat in the unit was great and having warm floors from the Post Office below was also enjoyed. The bedding was very comfortable and the bathroom was roomy and eclectic. Note that I travelled solo and did not use the upper floors though I did check them out. Very steep stairs would be an issue for some and difficult to move luggage . Kitchen was compact and functional..funky soapstone sink. I always wipe things down before and after but was dismayed that you could write your name on the stovetop dust. For a place that charges a cleaning fee I expected better
There were however a few issues which as a frequent renter on this site I feel comfortable sharing. The unit was essential "broom swept" while the bathroom was clean the kitchen was dusty and utensils were old and not so good. The staircase was very narrow with virtually no room at the bottom landing to carry anything in. And then the big problem, while trying to carry things in the very heavily sprung door smacks into your back. There were protruding bolts and a hook on the massive spring that caught on not one but 2 down jackets essentially ruining them. It was not an option not wearing a coat with below zero temps. The television set up was quite a challenge as well though internet access was very good
cool eclectic place with extensive gardens which I have seen in summer. Dockland is a great town with year round attractions and restaurants. The upper levels will hold interest to some. A one than done for me though.
We have rented The Owls Head Village Post Office for years and this is the first less than satisfied review. We strive to make our guests stay perfect and as comfortable as possible! Our cleaning person has worked with us from the beginning and she always leaves the place spotless. There was a week gap between the guest before you, so possibly that could have been the reason for a little dust? Nobody has ever complained about the stairs, door, or television setup before. We will look into replacing kitchen utensils. Again we are sorry to hear that you were less than 100% satisfied as we hold our standards very high.

This place is even more beautiful that the pictures show.
Our family loved our stay at Owl's Head. The place was beautifully decorated with something to look at in every nook. It was well stocked with linens, towels, and all the things you would need away from home. The outside deck and back yard had comfortable seating and was expertly landscaped. We loved being walking distance to the light house and had an easy drive to local restaurants and shops. We all agreed that we cannot wait to return to Maine and stay here again.
This was a great place to stay in a nice peaceful town. The post office was very clean, very accommodating, reasonably priced and exquisitely decorated. It is close enough to Rockland for all your necessities but there is a terrific little convenience store that has the best blueberry muffins and 7 napkin burgers. I would highly recommend the post office.
Charming, comfortable, in a wonderful location.
We have been to Maine many times, but have never stayed in this area. It was a surprise how beautiful and peaceful this part of the coast is, while still close to the museums, galleries and restaurants of Rockland. We had lovely walks each day to the lighthouse, and visited many other quiet coves along this beautiful coastline, as well as the Camden Hills. Many meals at McLoons lobster shack looking out over the inlet, and takeouts from the general store next door. The accommodation was charming and perfect for us and our dog. Everything was provided that we needed, and we enjoyed the very beautiful garden, lounging on the deck, and generally chilling out! Doug was very helpful at all times. Thank you for sharing this special place!
Absolutely adorable place in great location!
The cottage is lovely, and the general store next door is convenient. Both the refrigerator and the tub / shower combo are "compact", be we would love to come back to the post office!!!!
