Great bird watching from the deck or at the beach, gentle breezes day and night and loads of stars on clear nights, without the lights of the city. About Merry Dahms

The property has been in the family since 1941, when an original cottage was built nearby. This home includes loads of upgrades since it was built in 1969 (renewed baths, and kitchen, hardwood floors and A/C, 80 gal water heater for showers for the whole family) . The secluded, yet convenient location is a perfect get-away. At night, the star gazing is amazing with no city lights to interfere and maybe an owl in the woods...

We Summer in a nearby house and are available to provide suggestions for where to eat, fish, swim and more. (and Winter in St. Louis). As a child, I (Merry) spent Summers here with my family and now our children and grandchildren love it too!

Merry Dahms purchased this house in 1980

Why Merry Dahms chose South Chatham

Chatham is the best of Cape Cod ! great location on warm Nantucket Sound with 4000 foot long shallow beach, nearby bike trails, quaint downtown area, concerts and restored movie theatre and more ! Complete privacy where songbirds (not cars) will wake you. And we will include linens for you. Truly a destination with both east and south side beaches. Possibly seals on the downtown Lighthouse beach. Wonderful restaurants...something for everyone. Easy beach access, bike trail, or just quiet relaxing on the deck. Several community golf courses about 15 to 20 minutes away.

What makes this house unique

Truly a community with the feel of a small town, with all of the charm AND conveniences for a great vacation and even a movie theatre. We love the small town friendly feel of a great library. Friday night band concerts, Chatham A's baseball, great restaurants from family dining to gourmet cuisine.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family has enjoyed vacation life at the Dahms' house almost every Summer for nearly 20 years. It's become like a second home for us. It's comfortable, roomy, quiet at night, and very well-equipped and convenient to everything we love about the Cape....the golf courses, the beaches and the wonderful village of Chatham. We recommend it most enthusiastically... as long as there's time left every year for us ! and I'll be there again this year !

A Truly Wonderful Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

My family has been renting this wonderful house for more than 25 summers, so it's obvious that we love it! It is spacious and private, at the end of a very quiet lane, with every amenity you could want in a summer place -- WiFi, cable TV, fully equipped kitchen, two full baths (plus outdoor shower), washer & drier, deck with gas grill, and a great room with soaring ceilings and a wonderful view.

What more could you want? There's its large, woodsy lot with plenty of shade, privacy and room for the kids to have water-gun fights and chase fireflies. And the *two* great beaches -- one public, one much more private and secluded -- within a 5-minute walk. And its perfect location, just outside Chatham off Rte. 28 with easy access to grocery shopping, restaurants, bike trails and the rest of the Cape.

Finding this house was one of the luckiest things that ever happened to our family. I cannot recommend it more highly -- as long as you leave a week or two for us!

Wonderful House - Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

We love this property! The house is very comfortable, with a large, open living area which is perfect for families. We enjoyed many meals on the spacious deck and found the kitchen to be well stocked and easy to use. The house was very clean and the owners are lovely people who seem to genuinely care that the renters enjoy their stay. And, possibly most importantly, the location is fabulous. The house is set back on a wooded lot, which provides shade and some privacy, yet it is only steps from two great beaches. We highly recommend it!

The Andrews of Lafayette Square highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a relaxing vacation and this was 5-star. The home is beautiful with bedrooms providing privacy as needed. It truly is just a few steps from the beach, to enjoy as you like, but the "quaintness" of the whole Cape Cod area is all about relaxing. Clean and with all accommodations needed met, I would highly recommend. The restaurants and shopping were amazing and the hospitality like mid-westerners. Enjoy your next special time here, you won't be disappointed : )

Charming...private location, easy walk to beach.

  • 5 of 5

This charming home is nestled at the end of a very quiet lane. We visited one of two easily-accessible beaches before we even went inside. One beach has a large beach and the coolest "lazy river" when the tides come out of the marsh. Children of all ages will love this beach. The other beach is down a very private, wooded walk opening up onto the marsh and wide beach.

This home is SO cool. Soaring ceilings in the great room with beautiful views make this the gathering spot. The furniture is very comfortable. The bedrooms are very quiet with wooded views. Our favorite spot was the deck where many can gather for a cookout, breakfast, etc.

The kitchen is well appointed with new appliances and plenty of space to make a gourmet meal or a picnic lunch for a crowd.

Our family loved the grounds around the house with shady spots and plenty of sun.

You will want to return again, and again to this wonderful piece of heaven.

Cape Cod

Everything we needed!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our time here in June. The four of us had room to stretch out. This is a real Cape cottage. We stayed in Ridgevale two years ago and that place felt like the Day's Inn with all of the formica. This is how I remember our vacations as a kid! It's the real McCoy! I was able to get away from our kids, and the TV, to enjoy my books on the deck. Walking down to the beach (it is right there!) with coffee at 7am was the perfect start of every day for my sweetie and I. With two baths and my favorite outdoor shower, I got the whole crew ready in record time! The kitchen was small but the two of us did not bump into each other while cooking and the grill was nearby. Wine on the deck with the fresh sea breeze was perfect! We're coming back!

Idyllic vacation retreat.

  • 5 of 5

Loved our time in Chatham! We loved location, condition. It was quiet and secluded, less than a few blocks walk to the beach with the ocean and a pond, and clean sand. The house was more than adequate for six of us to get up, have breakfast, showers , home for lunch, more beach. Outside shower was really nice. We cooked many of our meals in the well equipped kitchen It was nice for dinner on the deck, and restaurants are amazing, a short drive away. We can't wait to be back!

Cockle Cove and Ridgevale
Car: necessary

About the home and location: It has it all!!! Beaches. Ocean. Privacy. Tidal wetlands. Serene location. Fully equipped. Wildlife. Bike trails. Shopping. Chatham has worked to preserve its appearance and character as it existed 50 plus years ago. There are no chain stores in Chatham which provides for a unique place to walk and shop. In keeping with this theme, this home on Chatharbor Lane (a dead end sandy road) is situated in a neighborhood unchanged in density over the last 60 years. It provides for a safe and simple place to relax and for families to explore.

Main attraction—the BEACH. This house is on 2 acres of wooded grounds with a view to Nantucket sound. Its mature trees provide for considerable privacy. The home is in a small neighborhood of year round residencies and a few seasonal homes—some are rentals. It is a short walk to Cockle Cove Beach, which is maintained by the Town of Chatham. There is a daily fee for use of this guarded beach but only if you choose to drive to the beach but it is only a short walk from the house. This beach is continuous with Ridgevale Beach and a wade in the water onto Hardings Beach (a little less than a mile of beach for sunbathing, swimming, beach sports etc.) This beach is groomed from Memorial day to labor day to remove the seaweed providing a long stretch of sandy beach. The water at Cockle Cove Beach is shallow for a good distance out providing for a safe place to enjoy the water. There are no currents or surf at Cockle Cove Beach. There is a local beach extending to the West from the town beach to the effluent from Taylor’s Pond that is more natural and full of shore life. This beach can be accessed by walking a short distance to the West on Chatharbor Lane. This beach is a local beach as there is no way to access this beach by car. It provides a wonderful beach surrounded by wetlands teaming with wildlife for families to enjoy: birding, fishing, beachcombing and lots of small crabs for the kids to catch and release.

The home. The house is an uncomplicated vacation home with privacy. The home was built up out of the ground take advantage of the view and being in the trees. The house has cable TV, internet with WiFi and a DVD player. It has a ground floor, a main floor with a 300 sq ft deck and an upper level. ( this provides for 3 sleeping levels) The home is continuously being upgraded the main floor has hardwood floors and is air conditioned, although he ocean breeze usually provides for adequate comfort on most days and evenings. The ground floor offers a sitting area along with a bunk bed (the bottom futon sofa can be laid flat to make a double bed as can the sofa in the sitting area.) and a newer full bath. Occupancy is normally limited to eight people. The kitchen is fully equipped with a large refrigerator (with icemaker), dishwasher, microwave, oven and range top, toaster oven and coffee maker. There is a Weber gas grill on the deck. The area on the ground level in front of the house provides a space for badmitten, fresbie The landlords live in the adjacent house. There is an outdoor shower with hot water for removing beach sand and enjoying a Cape Cod tradition.

The environment. The location provides a quiet space for perfect beach vacation. From awakening to the bird calls to going to sleep after a watching the stars from the deck, it becomes easy to relax. Living in a relatively unpopulated space makes it possible to walk the short distance to either beach to enjoy the moonlight on the water and the stars overhead. If you choose there are many great restaurants nearby, Friday night band concerts downtown Chatham, summer baseball (Chatham A’s), great bike trails, shopping in Chatham, movies at the restored Orpheum Theatre or exploring nature at the Natural History Museum in Brewster or any one of the facilities or activities sponsored by the Audubon Society.
