About Catherine Bennett, Realtor, Broker & Owner

Hello, I'm Catherine Bennett, a full-time real estate broker. After showing and selling thousands of waterfront properties, it was time to find a waterfront getaway of our own! Robert is an architect, professional engineer and Class A contractor so renovating this home is a delight for us. We're constantly updating and decorating, and are eager to share this special property with you.

Catherine Bennett, Realtor, Broker & Owner purchased this house in 2001

Why Catherine Bennett, Realtor, Broker & Owner chose Chesapeake Bay - Northern Neck

This property appealed to us because:

First, it is located right on the Corrotoman River, my favorite river because it is very clean and excellent for fishing and boating. It is THE river for sailboaters! By 'right on the water', I mean it is built about 25 feet from the water. Waterfront homes are now allowed to be built no closer than 100 feet from the waterfront.

Second, it has an amazing tidal pond that serves as a grocery store for the local waterfowl and a habitat for ducks, otter, and other fascinating woodland creatures. You'll be amazed at the drama that nature unveils daily, including the awesome birdwatching right here on the Atlantic flyway.

Third, it has a floorplan that makes it cozy for a couple or excellent for more people with gathering space and spread out spaces. Two fireplaces make it charming in winter and the wrap around porch with screened porch below make outdoor living in Virginia's excellent weather ideal. And because I love tall rooms, the vaulted ceiling in the front half of the first floor makes it wonderful!

Fourth, it has woods on two sides, the river on the third side and on the fourth side, up the hill, is a lovely neighbor. You can't get much more privacy! Fish Tales is 1.3 acres, including the tidal pond that is accreting, the opposite of eroding!

Fifth, it is in Corrotoman By The Bay, a wonderful little community with a terrific salt-water swimming pool, beautiful professional quality tennis courts with pickle ball. Free exercise equipment and wi-fi at the clubhouse, playground, and many other features. Parties, parades and other events are highlights of this area.

What makes this house unique

Most guests comment on the incredible views throughout the house of one of the most beautiful rivers in Virginia. There's occasional kayakers, fishing boats and sailboats that distract you from the awesome birds and wildlife who live on and follow the river.

They also love how beautiful the house is and the wooded setting. Best of all, they love that we welcome your family dog! The picture is of Robert with our darling Old English Sheepdog, Fanny, enjoying a few minutes of happy time in the living room.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thank you so much for letting us rent Fish Tales! We had so much fun. I love how much detail you put into every room. Your online pictures really don't do this place justice because it is so much prettier in person. Even the dogs loved it! Dad loved crabbing (when he caught some), Heather (my sister) loved the pool, my aunt loved helping my dad crab (most of the time she had better luck than he did), Mom loved watching the way the sun reflects on the water, and I loved taking pictures of nearly everything. The little red sailboat absolutely fascinates me! Do people still use it? Mom and I think it is just for show. We even named a snake that comes to the cove right beside the deck. His name is Sssteeeree haha! We all wish we could stay longer, but unfortunately we have to leave. I hope you like the sign that we made. Until next time...

Notes:
We are active members of the Northern Neck Kennel Club and know what a wonderful traveling companion your dog can be. When we traveled a lot it was hard to find a place accepting our dog who was better behaved than most children! So, we decided to welcome well behaved, well groomed dog to Fish Tales! Nearly all the floors are 'dog proof.' Please leave the property clean of dog impact. Please pick up and dispose of the poop, and if your dog sheds, please vacuum and clean the hair as a courtesy to us so we will continue to welcome other dogs. No cats or other pets are allowed.

Excellent!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time here! Our family with 2 teens, my Mom, and our dogs enjoyed the cottage different ways. The house is clean, well equipped. The view is spectacular. The owner is so nice to let us check in early as we arrive at 1:30. We definitely recommend this house! Thank you Katharine and Robert for sharing their house!

Serenity on the River

  • 4 of 5

Our family spent a week at Fish Tales. It was a relaxing and peaceful time. We loved the views from the deck. We started each morning on the deck with coffee and the views. The beds are comfortable and the quiet surroundings made for great sleep!

The community pool was wonderfully refreshing. We took our own paddle boards and enjoyed using them on the river at the property, as well as at Belle Island State Park which was just a 10 minute drive away. The tandem kayak was great fun for two and our dog loved jumping from it into the river for a swim. The community members were all friendly to us when we would see them while on a walk or at the pool.

The property's kitchen was well stocked for our cooking needs. Having a dishwasher and washer/dryer was perfect.

The path down to the river for launching watercraft is not kind to the feet. Wear good shoes! Dried holly leaves, sticks, thorns, and pine cones hurt! I would've raked the path if a rake was available. This really was the only downfall of the property. If you wait until low tide, the sandy area grows and does provide a bit more space to slip off your shoes before paddling away, but keep an eye out for sharp objects.

Catherine did a wonderful job providing a large kennel and many toys and treats for our dog. Overall we felt well taken care of. Great trip!

Quiet, Comfortable, Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Lots of personal touches, very comfortable, and well equipped especially for what turned out to be a mostly rainy weekend - scrabble, piano, interesting selection of books, movies. Great bird and fish watching! Enjoyed a casual seafood lunch at "The Corner Grill" and otherwise grilled or ate in. We did walk and ride bikes but too stormy for the pool, kayaking, crabbing or the giant duck float! Very close to the water and looks like easy walk in access. A dock would have been nice to crab or walk out on but as advertised not one on the property. Belle Isle State Park is minutes away. Rode around and looks amazing but again weather canceled our concert and picnic plans. Would definitely take advantage of their activities next visit. Directions were great but the driveway entrance area to Fish Tales is easy to miss. Thanks Catherine for a nice weekend.

Owner's Response: It's had not to fall in love with Fish Tales for the beauty and serenity. Every time you look out of the pristine river you can see something amazing going on; from Eagles soaring to ducks paddling with their ducklings to the Great Blue Herons stalking dinner along the water's edge. The house is full of treasures, big screen TVs, huge deck, comfortable screened porch and space for everyone to spread out but come together to have fun. Extremely comfortable, it changes as much as the waterfront activities, with new things being added all the time. Thank you for being our guest!
