Located less than a mile from Butternut Basin Ski Resort, Maya's Garden House is a cozy, beautifully furnished, converted 18th Century barn, surrounded by one of the most beautiful gardens in the Berkshires. The 20x30 foot great room with cathedral ceiling opens into a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, lots of cupboards and plenty of counter space.
Just outside the house is an outdoor kitchen and patio, complete with gas grill, fridge and sink, and a beautiful stone fireplace.
The house is situated on 16 acres of fields and woods, abutting East Mountain State Forest.
Maya's Garden Cottage has character and personality, reflecting the generosity and creativity of its owners. It is conveniently located to Tanglewood and Shakespeare & Co. in nearby Lenox, and an easy drive further north to the Clark Museum in Williamstown, and the trails and views on Mount Greylock. We became regulars at Patisserie Lenox, in Great Barrington. Highly recommended.

Upon arriving at Maya's place, I was very pleased to find that the photos are absolutely right on. No tricky angles or lighting to make you think you're getting something you're not. The cottage may actually be more spacious (if a bit cluttered) than it looks from photos here. The kitchen is well stocked with the gadgets you need and there are plenty of clean linens provided. It feels very much like staying with a good friend. If you require the sanitized condition of a hotel, this is not for you. It is a renovated barn. (Read: Rustic) I am only deducting the half star rating because of a few minor things. We had a hard time finding enough outlets in convenient places to charge all our electronic devices. Parking is tight. Two of the three beds are nearing their replacement age and the pull-out couch, as can be expected, is only suitable for kids. (We sleep in a Tempurpedic at home so maybe we're a bit spoiled. And yes, like Goldilocks, I tried them all.)
The main house is actually closer to the cottage than you might expect, but still quite private and the hosts were absolutely unobtrusive. Then, there are the grounds...whoa...amazing. Usually cottage rentals are short on space inside and often shorter on land. Not here. Step out onto the back deck and wander among well over an acre of towering maples and perennial gardens, lovingly designed and cared for by Maya herself. There are several spots to sit and lose yourself in a book or maybe gain inspiration for your own garden...or just enjoy the fact that you don't have to pull any weeds here...smile...and take a nap.
Great Barrington downtown is a quick drive or a long walk from the cottage. (My mother-in-law and I are big walkers and we went there and back, no problem.) Great restaurants, most of which we didn't try because we were enjoying cooking and eating together at the long table back at the cottage. Art galleries galore, boutiques and cafes.
The area is just perfect for wandering, especially by bike. We found the area around Lake Buel to be of moderate challenge, light traffic, and really beautiful natural scenery.
Our visit was really wonderful. All our guests agreed the place is just magical.
I had not seen Maya's Garden House prior to our family's arrival, because we were being treated by a family member. What a true delight, the second we arrived. The home was so comfortable, clean, roomy and complete with virtually every amenity and "extras," from a complete, modern kitchen, frosty air conditioning, a huge supply of towels, cleaning products, etc. The decor was pretty without being pretentious, the emphasis on comfort. We felt "at home" the moment we arrived. The grounds are breathtaking. Aside from the wet-sink gas grille AND charcoal grill BBQ patio, there was an outdoor chimney, ready with a load of firewood and acres of gardens to enjoy, with seating tucked away in the nicest areas. The location is a big plus, too, with the house tucked away from the road, but an easy, short drive to shopping. We loved every minute of our time there and would gladly come back again. Maya's gardening and decorating touches made our stay a delight.
What a hidden gem! Owners Carl and Maya, who are on premises...the rental house is situated behind their home on 15 acres of beautifully landscaped property...outdid themselves. The totally renovated and remodeled barn features original structural beams in a large, open great room setting featuring two conversation pits with comfortable furniture, a totally modern kitchen with lots of room, a large dining room area/table, large screen TV and lovely decor throughout the home, pretty but not pretentious. Lots of little touches abound and it feels like a home, not a rental property. The A/C kept the entire house comfortable even when it was hot and muggy outside and they thought of everything, amenity-wise...complete kitchen, even a basket of toiletries in the master bathroom. As comfortable and spacious as the actual house was, the grounds are even more breathtaking, including a deck, a separate gas grille AND charcoal grill patio, an outdoor fireplace and everywhere you look, picturesque garden settings. Best of all, with a deposit, we were able to bring our two terriers with us, so it really felt like home. We were amazed the moment we entered the home for the first time and
Our family has always loved the Berkshires, and we have spent many vacations there. But of all the places we have stayed, this is the first one we have called home.
It is charming in a warm, inviting way. The furniture is comfortable, the kitchen is spotless, and everything we needed was supplied. The gardens with stone kitchen and fireplace are beautiful.
Maybe best of all is falling asleep to the sound of the fountain, and waking up with wild turkeys in the field behind the house.
We will be back next year.
We arrived from England and found Maya's Garden House cold, dirty, run-down and in need of much repair. After one uncomfortable night we left and found another property. I think the owner agreed with us when we told him we were leaving and it seemed that he and his wife had not even thought of checking things before our visit. I note that the property is unavailable until late March 2010 and hope that in that time the owner will completely refurbish the house. We lost our deposit and had to find somewhere else the next day which was not a good start to our holiday.
Less than a mile from Butternut Basin Ski Resort.
The Berkshires, in addition to being beautiful, have the greatest concentration of music, theatre, dance and other cultural events in the United States. And Great Barrington is the center of it all. Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, Berkshire Theatre Festival, and Shakespeare and Company are all less than 1/2 hour away, and there are restaurants, antique emporiums and lakes to swim and fish in everywhere.
Winters are also special, with lots of ski slopes, and if it's too cold, the Community Center has weight rooms, a pool and cultural activities for children and adults.
