The first words out of first time visitors are “WOW'! Great spot, nice low bluff, fantastic beach.” Duneswater at Onekama is all that: a private, one-family home with brand new kitchen filled with state-of-the-art amenities, where dogs are welcome.
From the private road entrance, the lowest level contains a beach shower and laundry facilities. The main floor is reached from the inner stairway or from the south side redwood deck, complete with cushioned deck furniture and a gas barbecue. The main floor great room is dominated by the spectacular lake views and the large fieldstone working wood fireplace. The dining area shares this space.
The kitchen has everything you need or want. Gas stove and cooktop with lake view, coffee makers (drip & espresso), all small appliances, icemaker, dishwasher and microwave. Truly a cook’s kitchen with lots of counter space and breakfast bar with swivel stools.
The south bedroom has a queen bed and a lazy-boy reading chair. The north bedroom contains twin beds. The main floor full bathroom has a large well-lit walk-in shower.
Upstairs is a sleeping loft with a variety of twin beds and a full bed to accommodate your crew’s requirements. The loft has an open space for cards or games and 1/2 bathroom.
Dogs have always lived in this house, so one well-behaved dog is allowed with an additional $200 refundable pet deposit. As a result, if you have dog allergies another home may suit you better.
There is no smoking.
Outdoors is living with the view. The redwood deck is protected from northerly breezes. The shade patio is for taking the air, and the beach itself is for lounging, walking or pit-fires.
There are books, games and satellite dish TV, even DVDs and music CDs – but that’s not why you choose Duneswater. The secluded location, private beach, incredible view, comfortable well appointed home – that’s the choice!
The beach is back! The trend of rising water levels in Lake Michigan has tapered off, and our beach has reappeared. It is easily accessed by the new railed staircase completed in fall 2016.
Duneswater embraces the concept of continuous quality improvement (CQI) for the comfort of our guests. In recent years, many changes have been made, including: rebuilding the main deck, new carpet in main floor BRs, new sofas, re-covered bar stools, retiled fireplace spark apron and new screening, paint, new shower light main floor bath, new stairs to the beach and new carport.
Whatever your “great” vacation requirements might be, if it’s not at Duneswater itself, it is nearby. The Village of Onekama has groceries, WIFI hotspot, post office, hardware store, gift shops and several good restaurants. Most other amenities, including a casino, are 15 miles south in Manistee. If you are a golfer, the three closest courses include Arcadia Bluffs (Golf Digest #10 ranked), Bear Lake County Highlands and Manistee National. A visit to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Shoreline, voted Good Morning America's 'Most Beautiful Place in America' in 2011, is a great excursion north along scenic M-22.
Maximum occupancy is 8 people. Minimum stay generally is 7 days.

Great House on Lake Michigan
We have been renting a place on Lake Michigan for 21 years and the last five straight have been at Duneswater. The house is clean and can comfortably accommodate 8 adults and all their stuff. It is remote enough to be out of the mainstream of travelers in the area but not too remote. The big attraction is Lake Michigan. Nearby Onekama is a sleepy little non touristy village with a couple of decent places to eat and a grocery store. Onekama also has Portage Lake which is connected to Lake Michigan so you have an inland lake connected to the big lake. The Heathlands, which is a decent "up North" golf course, is also in Onekama. Arcadia Bluffs, which is an outstanding golf course, is 12 miles away. I usually don't write reviews, but the Owner has been easy to work with and we love staying at the place.
Great beach house
We enjoyed our stay at Duneswater. This is our second time renting this home and it has everything we needed and more. The only downside was that all our linens and towels had to be washed and dried by 11:00 check out time. We had to get up at 6:30 am to start showers and the wash so it was all done in time for the 8 of us. It would have been better to strip beds and start wash for the clean up crew. I found this to be a hassle our last morning.
We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Duneswater. We are having a beautiful summer in northern Michigan.
Thank you for sharing your concerns about the laundry arrangement. It is a tough one but necessary for adequate time to get ready for our next arrival and keep the house and property in top notch condition. Our turnaround team has much to do with 2 bedrooms, large sleeping loft, 2.5 baths, laundry area, kitchen/dining/living space, 2 decks, carport, woods and beach areas to clean and maintain. We are happy to provide the convenience of onsite laundry facilities and supplies to use during your stay. To save time at checkout, some guests have opted to bring their own linens and towels.
Again, thank you for choosing Duneswater. It was a pleasure having your group as our guests, and we hope to see you again.
Great beach house
We really enjoyed our stay at Duneswater on Lake Michigan. The house provided all that we needed for a nice relaxing vacation. We will definitely be back!
Spent the best 4th of July at Duneswater
This house located on a absolutely beautiful part of the beach was everything we hoped it would be. Crystal clear, not rocks and very private. The modern kitchen is a plus. Furnishing a bit dated, but okay for a beach house Everything was clean and in order when we checked in. It was a great family vacation spot. Found the Glenwood, Blue Slipper Bistro, and Annie & Teddies Ice Cream shop a must for any visitor. Local IGA was also a pleasant surprise with a butcher available for fresh cuts of meat. Not too far from Sleeping Bear Dunes which is a must for anyone visiting the area for the first time. We would love to rent this house again.
Yoga, massage, concerts in the park, wine tasting, beautiful sunsets, scenic drives, farmers market & roadside stands, trail biking, hiking, artesian wells
