About Gary Burke
We moved to the mountains of North Carolina in 1990 to get out of the hectic city of Dallas, Texas. We had been looking for somewhere to build that was lakefront or creek-front when we discovered this property in Dillsboro that was on beautiful Dick's Creek. We bought it and I built the cabin for us to live in. Eventually I was able to acquire adjacent property and built another home. We liked the original cabin too much to sell so we decided to place it on the vacation rental market so others could enjoy it.
Gary Burke purchased this Cabin in 1992
Why Gary Burke chose Whittier
15 acres of prime mountain property with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park bordering the West ridge property line and Dick's Creek bordering the East property line. The cabin sits in a private location on the corner of the property backing up to the creek.
What makes this Cabin unique
The cabin is not your average rental cabin. I'm a custom builder and originally built it to live in and did until building another home on the property. It is a great location being centrally located in Dillsboro. You can go one way towards Waynesville and Asheville or the other direction towards Cherokee and Bryson City. The cabin is privately located on 15 acres with no one to disturb you and a wonderful, relaxing back porch to sit on and enjoy the creek. You can make a day out of that. I've lived many places and this is by far the best place so far. You can bet on having four full seasons to enjoy. It's the perfect location. Come and enjoy.

Awesome Mountain Cabin
Couldn’t imagine expecting anymore in terms of what a “Mountain Cabin” should be with all the modern conveniences. Thank you for affording us the seamless great experience.
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Rushing Waters cabin. It was quiet and peaceful. We loved sitting on the deck that overlooks the mountain stream. At night, we would open the windows and go to sleep with the sounds of the stream. I would definitely go back. The cabin is exactly as described. The kitchen was fully equipped with just about anything you might need. We actually found an ice cream churn so we made a couple of churns of peach ice cream while we were there. Loved it
Our family of 6 (4 adults/2 kids) stayed in this well stocked cabin. 3 Bedrooms /2.5 baths with an additional daybed in the loft made this a perfect location for us. The kids loved playing in the creek, building dams and hunting for salamanders and crawfish. A plus was a full sized washer and dryer for those who fell in ;-).
The property was 3 miles up steep narrow gravel road. Some washboarding/potholes as a result of the summer rains but we did not have any difficulty in our SUV reaching the property.
No WiFi was +/-. We liked being unplugged but made it difficult to seek out information on surrounding activities/weather. We had cell phones with Verizon and phone reception was fine, surfing was sporadic.
They did have satellite for TV but we never turned it on prefering family time of games, puzzles and reading.
We never saw the owner, but he was responsive to phone call when we lost power. Candles are available but recommend that you also take flashlights.
Property within 30 minutes to Cherokee, GSMNP & Bryson City if you want to go beyond Dillsboro and Sylva.
Bottom line is we loved this peaceful retreat and would certainly stay again if in the area.
it was a good week for us. everything was as advertised. Nice, quiet place to stay, everything we needed was provided.
we definitely recommend this place.
grandkids enjoyed the creek. they complained all week because there was no Wi-Fi, but that's the reason I chose the place; not phone, no pool, no pets.
cell service is not good but that's part of mountain life.
thank you Burkes for helping to make it a good week for us.
Loved it! Would go back tomorrow if I could!
The cabin was wonderful! It was so much more than I expected! With 4 bedrooms and 2 and a half bathrooms, we had plenty of room to spread out and nobody had to wait their turn to use the bathroom. If you didn't like the way one bed slept you had 3 other options to choose from! We also enjoyed the privacy the cabin offered! My little boy will use the bathroom wherever he is, so I didn't have to worry about offending the neighbors! With the grill and the smoker as well as the kitchen, we could cook whatever we wanted! Working the oven was a learning curve but we figured it out! I had emailed Gary before arriving at the cabin to see what all I needed to bring, thinking trash bags and that sort of thing, but it was all provided! There was washing detergent and fabric softener, there was salt and pepper along with other things you may need to cook with. You didn't have to stock the entire kitchen just to cook one meal! They provided good toilet paper too! It wasn't John Wayne toilet paper (rough and tough and don't take no crap off nobody)! LOL My kids loved the stream in the back too! They may have disturbed the peace with all the laughing! In short, we loved it and wish that Gary had houses to rent wherever we decided to travel in the future! If there was one thing I missed from my home and wished it was there, it was a TV in the master. Sometimes I don't enjoy watching Sponge Bob with the kids.

The cabin is located on 15 private acres that borders “The Great Smoky Mountains National Park” and is only 5 miles away from the popular tourist location Dillsboro, North Carolina. Western Carolina University is 20 minutes south in Cullowhee and continuing south is Cashiers, Highlands with all the famous waterfalls. Asheville is 1 hour to the east or 20 minutes to Waynesville and Maggie Valley. The Cherokee Indian Reservation is north as well as the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and all the outlet malls. To the west is Bryson City, Fontana Lake and the Nantahala Outdoor Center for white water rafting. The cabin is perfectly located with the back porch overlooking Dick’s Creek. Dick’s Creek is a bold mountain creek that cascades down the mountain in a series of waterfalls and pools. It’s perfect for children to play in or move the rocks around building pools and waterfalls.
