A rustic and boho apartment, cosy and artistic, close to everything yet peaceful with a large secluded garden and a private entrance. The apartment includes a large kitchen with a dining area, 2 bedrooms which fit 4 people and a bathroom with a shower. Located in a renovated timber house in the old centre of Reykjavik. The neighbourhood is friendly and safe yet close to bars, cafés, restaurants, tourist attractions and shops.
We are a family of five, Bassi is studying to be a carpenter and Vigdis is an actress at The National Icelandic Theatre. We have two girls, 10 and 2 years old.
Bassi and Vigdis purchased this apartment in 2011
We bought our house in February 2011. It was derelict and was in very bad condition. We began renovating it immediately and are still going at it . We are doing it ourselves slowly but surely, it´s a way of life. We love the neighbourhood, Vigdis was brought up a few houses away and we have lived in the quarter for 14 years. We saw potential in the garden which is unusually large for this area. The house is a big part of our lives, we live on the upper floor and let out the lower floor. The apartments have large windows and high ceilings which give a sense of space that we like. The house has a warm feel to it, a calmness, particularly on the lower floor which is wonderful, especially since it´s in the middle of the centre. It´s a 10 minute walking distance from the bus terminal (where the Flybus from the airport stops) and a 3 minute walking distance from the nearest bus stop.
We love old original things and like to have our surroundings beautiful. The art on the walls are from our private collection, things we´ve collected through the years on our travels around Europe. We have taken great care in keeping the apartment original to the period when the house was built (1903) which gives the apartment distinction. The ceilings are high and the windows large so the flat is bright and has a sense of space.
The apartment is attached to Bassi and Vigdis home and has it's own private entrance. Our host family was friendly, laid back, and helpful. We felt welcomed and felt a little bit like part of their family during our stay. They had a lovely loaf of bread, cheese, juice, and other staples in the kitchen for us. It is in the BEST location! Free parking was available. The apartment was so warm, cozy and full of old world charm. There was plenty of space for my daughter and I. We loved our stay there and would return without hesitation.
The apartment is in the centre of Reykjavik, amidst a plethora of restaurants, shops, museums and art galleries. Situated on a friendly street a stones throw away from the local bakery, supermarket and organic grocery store.
