About Alexandra & Jon
Alexandra & Jon own and manage the Vaquita House. In addition to maintaining our rental, Alexandra is an author and psychotherapist; Jon is an organizational consultant and musician. We also have long-standing interest in and love of dolphins. The Vaquita is an endangered porpoise found only in the Gulf of California. We donate a portion of the proceeds from the house to the conservation of the ocean and preservation of the dolphins and whales.
Alexandra & Jon purchased this House in 2005
Why Alexandra & Jon chose Opal Cliffs
We've lived on the east side of Santa Cruz since going to the University years ago. The Opal Cliffs neighborhood offers a vacation vibe in a family friendly neighborhood. Nestled between Capitola Village and Pleasure Point, you can walk to everything you need while at the same time having home base in a quiet, safe neighborhood. Many people run, walk, and bike on Opal Cliff Drive to take in this beautiful street; Privates Beach is 10 doors down from our house. The upgraded promenade along East Cliff Dr is two blocks away. We love it here because everything you need is within a few blocks. You can literally park your car for the week and walk to Pilates, baked goods, surf spots, breakfast, organic markets, bars, beaches, bike shops, boutiques, wine tasting and anything else you can think of. We often think our neighborhood is too good to be true. . . but it is true. Come and see.
What makes this House unique
Vaquita House is in an upscale residential neighborhood. We personally do the check ins and check outs and keep the property in tip top shape; it is professionally cleaned between each stay. We live nearby and are here for anything you may need. Need a restaurant recommendation for dinner -- romantic or with the kids, you got it! Lovely hiking spot, you got it! Best local cafe, you got it! We love to share the ins and outs of Santa Cruz and Captiola and are happy to answer your questions at any time during your stay.

The area was really nice
The house was very nice and spacious enough for three people. The garden was pleasant
Wanted to love it
Generally a good property however mattresses and bedding need a serious upgrade. A bigger concern is that immediately after we left we started getting texts about a “missing beach towel and wine glass”. I know we didn’t lose/remove/come home with a beach towel and the wine glass was not something we used. After I confirmed this with the owner, the questions continued- over a BEACH TOWEL. I’d rather not feel like I need to inventory all contents of a property upon arrival. It was a strange experience to feel accused, and something that has never happened with the many other properties we’ve rented in the past. The stay was fine, minus the uncomfortable mattresses. However, the experience after our stay was enough to make me hesitant to recommend.
Great location and nice rental
Rental is exactly as it appears in photos and well maintained. It was the perfect size for our family of 3. Location is wonderful. Enjoyed our stay!
Just Love It
For me this property was ideal. A short walk (1/2 mi.) to Capitola for great dining, shopping and of course, a beach. In the other direction an equal distance walk to The Hook surf spot to watch some of Santa Cruz's best surfers. I also took advantage of the entrance to Privates Beach just 10 doors down. The neighbors I met during my stay were lovely. The owners, Alexandra and Jon, are very nice and encouraged me to contact them with any questions I may have.
The house and yard are even better than the photos. The kitchen was fully equipped, bed (I just used one room) and pillows very comfortable and everything just felt clean and well maintained. One thing I noticed that may not mean much to some but... I turned the heater on in the morning and went to make a pot of coffee... the ceiling heater vent was directed (intentionally???) at the coffee mugs on the open shelves on the side of the cabinet. Warm coffee mug! Wow. Also, as far as the heater, it was hardly needed as the home must be well insulated and maintained a comfortable temp.
I come to this area frequently to visit my son and would easily make this my first choice when booking in the future.
Thank you Alexandra and Jon!
The house was very quaint and in a perfect location. We enjoyed the patio area and the peace and quiet. Would definitely stay here again.
The Yaquita House is a very clean, perfectly situated, reasonably priced rental in Santa Cruz. The kitchen has one of the best collections of cookware that I have seen in rentals. All in all, a great vacation rental. Our only wish is an upgrade on the mattresses, they were not high on the comfort scale.
Thanks for your review. We installed a new queen mattress in June 2018, which is a Saatva pillow top, just like the one we have at our own house. I can only assume your comment on the mattresses was on the twin beds, which are older.
We are installing new bed frames and Saatva mattresses for those on April 24
