About Alexandra & Jon
Alexandra & Jon own and manage the Vaquita House. In addition to maintaining our rental, Alexandra is an author and psychotherapist; Jon is an organizational consultant and musician. We also have long-standing interest in and love of dolphins. The Vaquita is an endangered porpoise found only in the Gulf of California. We donate a portion of the proceeds from the house to the conservation of the ocean and preservation of the dolphins and whales.
Alexandra & Jon purchased this House in 2005
Why Alexandra & Jon chose Opal Cliffs
We've lived on the east side of Santa Cruz since going to the University years ago. The Opal Cliffs neighborhood offers a vacation vibe in a family friendly neighborhood. Nestled between Capitola Village and Pleasure Point, you can walk to everything you need while at the same time having home base in a quiet, safe neighborhood. Many people run, walk, and bike on Opal Cliff Drive to take in this beautiful street; Privates Beach is 10 doors down from our house. The upgraded promenade along East Cliff Dr is two blocks away. We love it here because everything you need is within a few blocks. You can literally park your car for the week and walk to Pilates, baked goods, surf spots, breakfast, organic markets, bars, beaches, bike shops, boutiques, wine tasting and anything else you can think of. We often think our neighborhood is too good to be true. . . but it is true. Come and see.
What makes this House unique
Vaquita House is in an upscale residential neighborhood. We personally do the check ins and check outs and keep the property in tip top shape; it is professionally cleaned between each stay. We live nearby and are here for anything you may need. Need a restaurant recommendation for dinner -- romantic or with the kids, you got it! Lovely hiking spot, you got it! Best local cafe, you got it! We love to share the ins and outs of Santa Cruz and Captiola and are happy to answer your questions at any time during your stay.

Great stay in Capitola
First time to rent this property and it was fantastic. The owners were great giving us all info ahead of time. The location can't be beat, with walking access to all sorts of areas. We loved it and can't wait to come back. Tom
Cozy retreat in Santa Cruz
This cute little home is in the perfect location for everything! There are several areas for beach access nearby and the beach is located directly across the street. One thing to note is that Privates Beach is now a public access beach so no key card needed and we were a little disappointed that we couldn’t gain access to it as early as 7:00 in the evening because the gate automatically locks when it gets close to dark.
The house itself is cozy and inviting and had everything we needed. It is also a short walk to Capitola which we loved. Jon was very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We would gladly stay there again.
Great Family Getaway
We stayed at Vaquita House for a long weekend getaway with our toddlers. Location was great! Walking distance to Capitola and great views like Pleasure Point. We explored Roaring Camp Railroad and the Redwood State Park, about a 30 minute drive from the house.
We were very comfortable in the house. It was easy to get in and it was clean.
The area was really nice
The house was very nice and spacious enough for three people. The garden was pleasant
Wanted to love it
Generally a good property however mattresses and bedding need a serious upgrade. A bigger concern is that immediately after we left we started getting texts about a “missing beach towel and wine glass”. I know we didn’t lose/remove/come home with a beach towel and the wine glass was not something we used. After I confirmed this with the owner, the questions continued- over a BEACH TOWEL. I’d rather not feel like I need to inventory all contents of a property upon arrival. It was a strange experience to feel accused, and something that has never happened with the many other properties we’ve rented in the past. The stay was fine, minus the uncomfortable mattresses. However, the experience after our stay was enough to make me hesitant to recommend.
Our beds and wood frames are new (queen summer of ’18, twins spring of ’19.) The pillow top mattresses are by Saatva, which has a very high rating — over 40,000 reviews the rating is 4.7/5. (https://www.saatvamattress.com/saatva-classic-reviews ) We have one at home and it is very comfortable to us. Half the sheets are new this year; they are all high quality cotton. The blankets are new on the twin beds; we are about to replace the queen blanket. There are eight pillows with different levels of softness/hardness, including two that are allergy free.
Great beach home! Great location... Easy walk to village.... Great accommodations.... Very cozy
