Romantic Retreat in Wine Country near the Russian River and Coast

Lavender Cottage is the guest house at Sunrise Ridge an extraordinary estate of lush organic gardens and lavender fields. Please see our website for pictures and details of this incredible property. It is in Sonoma County’s Russian River Wine Country adjacent to a 100 acre vineyard and minutes from the Sonoma Coast. The cottage offers comfort and privacy with sweeping views of vineyards, redwood forests and Mt. St. Helena. We are located in the coastal hills a few miles from the hamlet of Occidental just over sixty miles north of San Francisco. It is centrally located just minutes from the spectacular Sonoma Coast, the Russian River recreational area and the world renowned Osmosis Spa. Just 10 miles west of Santa Rosa the area offers redwood forests, the Sonoma Coast and world class restaurants all in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country.

Come stay in our newly built spacious (830 sf) one bedroom, one bath house. Built of nontoxic and sustainable materials it is ideally suited for chemically sensitive individuals. It is located in the orchard and has panoramic views of west Sonoma County from every window. Watch the sun rise over Mount Saint Helen from the great room or the window seat in the bedroom. Sip a glass of wine on the private terrace while watching the reflected light of sunset on the rolling hills dotted with vineyards and redwoods. Soak in the hot tub on the terrace after a day of hiking or picnicking on the spectacular Sonoma Coast.

The retreat is a turn-key accommodation with a queen-size bed and queen sleeper sofa. Your stay includes complimentary local wine. Pick organic vegetables in the garden and apples, black berries and figs in season. We can arrange a massage in the cottage or on the terrace, a train ride and dinner while you cruise through wine country or a private tour of the neighboring vineyards. Of course you can just relax and read a book or hike or bike on local trails in this beautiful country setting.

About Lavender Cottage

My husband and I moved to Sonoma County in 2003 and build our house and guest house on this 7 acre estate in the Russian River wine appellation of Sonoma Wine Country. We are retired professors and environmental scientist who were looking for up scale country living with an optimal climate. Since then we have designed developed acres of bio dynamic gardens based upon ecologically sustainable practices of permaculture. We have found a piece of heaven and look forward to sharing it with you.

Why Lavender Cottage chose Sonoma County

West Sonoma County offers everything that you would want in an up scale and relaxing vacation: excellent wine tasting with hundreds of wineries to chose from, the Russian River which offers excellent swimming, kayaking and birding and the spectacular Sonoma Coast. We have hiking, biking, birding and world class restaurants, locally grown organic food and artisan cheeses. You get all of this in a year round mild climate, redwoods and wonderful hamlets for shopping and sightseeing.

What makes this house unique

Sunrise Ridge Gardens which sits high upon an east facing ridge in west Sonoma County has sweeping views of vineyards and redwood forests that lead the eye across the Sonoma Plain. It is a seven acre garden sanctuary minutes from wineries, the coast and the Russian River. Pick organic vegetables in the garden and apples, black berries and figs in season. We can arrange a massage in the cottage or on the terrace, or a private tour of the neighboring vineyards. Of course you can just relax and read a book or hike or bike on local trails in this beautiful country setting.

A lovely get away in idyllic surroundings. Perfect for our fist wedding anniversary, and a last little trip before the baby arrives.

Beautiful and relaxing getaway

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I spent my birthday weekend at Lavender Cottage. It was such a beautiful and peaceful place to relax. The view of the sunset over the entire valley from the patio and hot tub is amazing. The cottage itself is lovely, and was very clean for our arrival. The owners are so kind and available if you need anything, but the cottage and patio area are very private. Even though the property is up in the hills, it's a quick drive through orchards and vineyards to go wine tasting, see the neighboring towns, or head over to the coast. And, the surrounding gardens are a beautiful place to enjoy nature, as well as tasty fruit! We definitely would like to return for another stay!

Quiet getaway with the most beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

We had a very pleasant stay at Lavender Cottage. Coming to the US for doctors treatments we just needed a comfortable and quiet place to relax and the cottage fully lived up to our hopes and expectations. On top af that it has the most breath taking view and is surrounded by a beautiful garden with lots of plants and birds. The house is very comfortable and has everything you need. The owners were very helpful when we a week later again needed a place to stay - and they did a lot to help us out. Being from Denmark we wanted to spend as much time as possible outside in the Californian summer - and the only thing we missed at the cottage was some kind of sun bed on the patio. We will definitely stay there again another time.

Lovely honeymoon cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for our honeymoon 2.5 years ago (March 2013) but a friend just asked about it and in looking it up again, I realized I never wrote a review! It was absolutely perfect for us. We drove to the coast several days, went wine tasting, zip lining, and enjoyed the unique experience of a cedar bath at the spa nearby. We loved the cozy privacy of the cottage and the beautiful setting. We're not morning people but it was definitely worth it to wake up to watch the sun rise from the hot tub one morning. The cottage was also well stocked with everything you'd need. I love that I will always remember my honeymoon when I smell lavender because everything there had that scent. :) I only recall one negative and that was that the mattress was softer than we like and it seemed well worn. That may be irrelevant at this point and I still wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying there.

I wish I lived at the Lavender Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Next time you visit the West Sonoma area, do yourself a favor and stay at the Lavender Cottage. Everything you could want out of a wine country weekend is there - a variety of fruit available for picking right outside your door, stunning views, privacy, and a very comfortable place that feels like home - a well supplied kitchen, products in the bathroom, grill and hot tub on the deck. Brenda, the owner, was wonderful and gave us great tips for restaurants and wineries and unlike an Airbnb home we rented in San Francisco, she didn't have a huge list of rules - her easy going warmth added so much to the experience.

Beautiful cottage with wonderful views!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is lovely! Wonderfully cozy and private with everything you would need. Large windows throughout that allow you to see all of the beautiful scenery...If you are an early riser as I am, you will get to enjoy the wonderful sunrises out the kitchen window and hear the various birds waking up (even

including what sounded like a turkey one morning!) - absolutely wonderful... I especially liked the window seats for a quiet read.

The gardens are beautiful and lemon trees outside the door which made wonderful lemonade. You will need a car as this cottage is up in the hills outside town. We actually loved being able to return to our little sanctuary every evening after a day at the coast or the vineyards..everything is in easy driving distance...the only negative thing about this cottage was that we had only leased it for 1/2 the week

before heading down to time would lease for the week!

Owner's Response: Michael and Roberta, I am so glad that you enjoyed this wonderful property as much as we do. That was indeed a turkey you heard! We hope to see you again soon. Remember that returning guests get a discount. Brenda

Wonderful relaxing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful long weekend staying in the Lavender cottage - it's quiet and serene, beautiful panoramic views, clean, comfortable interiors (I love the window seats!), great garden with fruits and aromatic herbs, easy grilling on the patio and a just-the-right-size hot tub. We wished that we hadn't scheduled so many activities during our stay in Sebastopol as we just wanted to hang out at the cottage!
