Love the beauty of nature and love this beach! I work hard and play hard but in the end want a peaceful, private beach to relax.
Been coming here since the early 1980's and the waters have this amazing turquois that change with the sunlight that is so magical. The place brings peace in my heart. Abaco is a family island with almost zero crime , I like safe and peaceful.
Beach, kayak, beach, sailing, beach, fishing, beach, hammock under the stars.
It's crazy great. The pictures DO NOT do it justice at all. We were floored rolling out the back door onto that fantastic beach. We haven't left it since we unpacked the car.
Dwight and Diana have been awesome. Dwight hooked me up with a hawaiian sling for the lobsters and that thing is downright lethal. I got 1 with a tickle stick and net in about an hour of chasing them around, at which point Dwight came down the beach and offered the sling. I got 2 more good sized lobster in no time and easily could have had more. I saw one that was easily the largest I've ever seen and I've lobstered many times in the Florida Keys. I swear it looked as big as a small dog. HUGE. He was lucky, as I already had more than enough for the two of us, so he was spared, although if he doesn't move on he may not be so lucky tomorrow. Needless to say we had lobster for dinner.
Dwight also seems to like fishing more than a little and might head out with us to show us the ropes out on the water, which would be awesome for these two newbies to the area.
I'll try your suggestion on the plankton tomorrow. I was out wandering a bit this evening, but didn't know about that, so I'll give that a whirl tomorrow.
My family, myself, and friends had a great time at the Nutty Mermaid. We have been all over the Bahamas, and I do mean all over. We were a mix of tech divers, reef divers, beachcomers, snorklers, and boaters, and Nutty Mermaid had it all for us. Make no mistake, you will need a car, but those are easily arranged in the city.
A perfect blend of privacy, with access to a "major" city, we really enjoyed the nite sky unpolluted by city lights, no noise, and a world class private beach. I'm not even a beach-goer, but this sandy beach in the back yard is unbeatable for small kids and adults alike. This is on the clear, brilliant, Sea of Abaco; the largest waves we had in our week were maybe 3 inches!
The minor downsides are a few horseflys, and you will need to drive to a restaurant; no real public transportation out there. The use of some minutes on a local cellphone was an unexpected bonus. Highly recommended, and I hope to return.
What a relaxing, beautiful vacation. Who wouldn't love having the ocean in his/her backyard?! The accommodations were very comfortable and very beachy; just what you'd expect in a beach house in the Bahamas. Michelle has supplied the house with everything you might need for "fun in the sun."
A swim (most of the way it was a walk) to your private island right in the middle of your backyard ocean is a must for everyone. Treasure Cay Resort is a quick 10 mins away. The ferry to Green Turtle Cay is only 15 mins from the house, and Marsh Harbor is a quick 20 min. drive. The neighbors are all so friendly and helpful, and Joy is a gem! She checked on us almost every day during our stay, and went out of her way to make sure any problems that occurred were immediately solved.
Cocktails on the patio at sunset were some of our best memories.
Can't say enough about the relaxing, enjoyable vacation we had during our Nutty Mermaid vacation. Would definitely recommend the Nutty Mermaid as a great vacation spot.
As a matter of fact, we liked it so much we're going back next month for a longer stay!!
My finance and I truly enjoyed our vacation at The Nutty Mermaid! We fell in with the place for many reasons:
*Fantastic accommodations and hospitality by Michelle and Joy.
*Beautiful views of the gorgeous turquoise ocean.
*Good snorkeling right off of their private beach.
*Perfect location with easy access by boat to Treasure Cay (Cocoa Beach) and Guana Cay (Nippers Bar).
*Stunning views of the sun rises every morning.
*Great fishing in the area.
*We got married in Marsh Harbor!
*Both Michelle and Joy were a pleasure to work with and full of information about the house, the area and things to do.
As other reviewers mentioned, pictures do not do the place justice. It was comfortable, very clean and had everything you needed to have a wonderful vacation! We will definitely be back! Thank you Michelle and Joy for an awesome time!!
And what a paradise Michelle and Joy have put together at the Nutty Mermaid! This was a great find and we will definitely visit again. Each day started on the patio with all five in our party watching the sun rise. No alarms were set; the sun rise there was that amazing! The remainder of our days were spent snorkeling around the coral outcroppings just off the beach in front of the house, paddle boarding, sailing, and relaxing in the amazing water. We also rented a boat from Rainbow rentals in Marsh Harbour and toured Hopetown and snorkeled Mermaid Reef just off the coast of Marsh Harbour. (I highly recommend visiting this reef if you have young children or first-time visitors to the Bahamas! It is 6-8 feet deep in crystal clear water and loaded with amazing fish!)
The house has all the comforts of home including a great kitchen with a gas stove and oven as well as a gas grill on the patio for grilling, satellite TV, WiFi. We took advantage of the grill nightly and enjoyed dinners on the patio. The TV and WiFi were great amenities, but we did not use them. It honestly felt like we were walking into our own home situated in paradise and not a rental property. Great job, Michelle and Joy! See you again soon.
If you are looking for a relaxing, peaceful and trainquil vacation, travel to the Abacos and stay at the gorgeous “Nutty Mermaid” house. Located between Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay (pronounced Key), the house sits directly on the beach. The house is beautifully furnished and has everything you would need, including a kayak, sunfish, paddle board, lots of snorkel masks and fins, gas grill and more. The beach is very private and there are several areas off the beach where you can snorkel and take beautiful underwater pictures of fish, turtles, lobsters and starfish. There is nothing like waking up in the morning, looking out your window overlooking the beach, and seeing the brilliance of the sunrise.
The owner of the home, Michelle, is incredibly helpful and very responsive. She answered all of our questions, sent us information on restaurants, grocery shopping, beaches, boat and auto rentals and airline options. She makes sure you feel like you are “staying in her home as her guest” and not just “renting a house on the beach.”
There were five of us in our group and we rented a van from A&P Auto Rental which is about 3 miles from the airport. The pickup and drop-off of the van was very fast and easy. If you are looking to rent a new vehicle, you will not find that in the Abacos. We chartered a full-day deep-sea fishing trip with Captain Mark at the Treasure Cay Marina. We caught enough fish to feed all of us for the entire week and to give the caretaker of the house fish to take home. Captain Mark made sure we had an awesome time and all the fish were cleaned and ready to take home when we arrived back at the dock. We also did a daylong snorkel trip, with Captain David, which included swimming with stingrays, sharks, turtles and pigs, yes, pigs. We also had the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most beautiful reefs in the Bahamas. Make sure you spend a day at the Treasure Cay beach. It is one of the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. We set up our chairs in front of the Treasure Cay Resort Bar and Grill. Finally if you are looking for a wonderful restaurant, visit Curly Tails in Marsh Harbour. The food is delicious.
Thank you again to Michelle and her caretaker Joy for making sure we had a fabulous vacation.
We had a wonderfully, relaxing vacation. I really loved the place feeling so private with the beautiful beach and water! The location was perfect for exploring both in the water and along the beaches or just relaxing. We couldn't have asked for any better of a location.
Privacy, peace, and tranquility on a private beach is what I love! Fishing, snorkeling, beach combing, sailing, enjoying the stars while swaying on the hammock, swimming, or basking in the warm Caribbean sun are at your front door. Just a short drive or boat ride away all restaurants, shops, and live music are at your demand. It's paradise just waiting to be enjoyed! Life is good!!
