~ About the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ~
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The park encompasses diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors views of dramatic volcanic landscapes.
Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities. In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been honored as an International Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.
The National Park Web site provides up-to-date information on volcanic activity, safety, schedule of park lectures/presentations, tours and hiking trails.

Thank you for a fabulous stay! things we loved about Pele's Secret Garden: being "home" from the National Park in minutes, TOTAL silence at night (and total darkness!), sleeping on the side of a volcano, the feeling of being in a fainforest/jungle but being in Hawaii, the pireplace on a chilly night, this beautifully furnished home with so many comforts and luxuries, the fresh flowers throughout the house....and so much more....
Enjoyed the tranquility and beauty of the home and the area. Plenty of indoor and outdoor space and very clean and comfortable. Only trouble was the lack of water pressure and hot water for the duration. The owner was gracious and made repeated attempts to have the problem fixed, but it was apparently a major breakdown and couldn't be fully repaired prior to our departure. So, never able to shower - had to heat water on the stove, but we made the best of it. Assuming it's now ok, future guests should enjoy this property tremendously.
From the moment we arrived we knew it would be fabulous. It is equipped with everything you could possibly need. Breakfast foods, fresh fruits, even a yoga mat! It is so quiet and peaceful. The sounds of the birds around was lovely. There is a hammock on the rap around deck for afternoon naps and the foliage around the house is gorgeous. Could stay here for a long time. Very close to the National park and restaurants. We loved every minute of it! We would definitely come back and recommend to everyone.
As a travel writer, we have stayed in a number of vacation rental properties worldwide, but this might be the best yet. The reasons are numerous. Peggy, the owner, was always quick to respond to our inquiries. She stays in the home from time to time, and her personal touches can be seen from the moment you walk in. The entire house is tastefully decorated and furnished. There are surprising welcoming gifts to be enjoyed, from fresh tropical fruit to good red wine (sorry we drank the whole bottle, Peggy). A gourmet-equipped kitchen just adds to the amenities. The general feeling is one of both comfort and seclusion. Even with the volcano beckoning, it is difficult to leave the wrap-around balcony that is warm and inviting during the day and peaceful and quiet at night. But Pele does call out, and the Park is just minutes away, as is the little town with its few restaurants and convenience stores. We did have great weather for our too-short stay, but I have the feeling this home would have been just as special regardless. We certainly will consider returning to Volcano and wouldn't think of staying anywhere else. --Stephen
Loved our stay in this lovely home. The owner has provided everything needed to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Lovely setting in the rain forest with walls of windows surrounded by beautiful plants. Only four stars because we couldn't quite figure out how to make the heating system operate. Loved being there and would go again. We did enjoy the fireplace and the owner provided ample wood for burning.
This vocational rental was amazing! Extremely well appointed - from the sliding glass doors to the outside from every room (wrap around deck). Truly a Secret Garden - surrounded by lush rain forest foliage. We were so very surprised to have awaiting for us upon arrival a fruit basket, eggs for breakfast, and a bottle of wine! So very gracious.
We found it perfectly located to the Volcano National park - just minutes away! And very close to Volcano Village. We spent three days enjoying the park and the nearby black beach where endangered green sea turtles can be seen on the beach. Only difficulty was no hot water on the last day for showers (guess due to solar heating system and it had been raining and overcast the last two days). Otherwise, a marvelous stay. Thank you.
I can't express how perfect this home was for our stay on the Big Island. This was our first trip to Hawaii and we had no idea where to stay. My husband and I, along with another couple rented a beauriful condo on the beach in Maui which we loved but wanted to experience something different on the Big Island. When we saw the listing for Pele's Secret Garden, our group was skeptical. They wanted to be in a more populated area with more to do. But somehow I knew it would be perfect. So we booked it and hoped for the best. IT FAR EXCEEDED OUR EXPECTATIONS. We all felt that there was actually a lot more to do in Hilo/Volcano than there was in Kona. We were looking for a different adventure to add to the overall Hawaiian experience. Pele's Secret Garden provided us with exactly that! Very easy access to Volcano National Park where we found what we were looking for....Volcanos, Lava, Scenic Views, Waterfalls and so much more. We did a one day trip to Kona but there was no comparison to what we did on the Hilo side.
And the home was spectacular. The minute you arrived, you felt a feeling of total relaxation. It was spotless, provided every amenity that you could want and the owner, Peggy could not have been more accommodating. She left us breakfast foods, fruit, wine and so much more. She also was extremely accessible to answer any questions that we had. Leaving that home was one of the hardest parts of leaving Hawaii.
If you don't know much about Hawaii like us, I would strongly suggest that you consider staying at Pele's Secret Garden. I promise that you won't be sorry!
Located within the 'Kilauea' area, one of the most Active Volcano in the US; with two eruption and most recent located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park of Halema'umau as the molten lava continues to reach the top of the crater floor. Pu'u Oo continues to rumble and flow, often times visible entering the Pacific Ocean. Come feel the pulse.
