~ About the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ~

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The park encompasses diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors views of dramatic volcanic landscapes.

Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities. In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been honored as an International Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.

The National Park Web site provides up-to-date information on volcanic activity, safety, schedule of park lectures/presentations, tours and hiking trails.

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

First time renting thru VRBO. I'm always suspicious when it comes to reviews and photos of something that seems too "good". Well, in this case the reviews were spot on but the photos are a little understated compared to seeing it in person! It's just a stunning home in a very stunning setting.

From the moment we walked in, we felt like our best friends had let us stay in their beautiful home. It felt so welcoming and not sterile like rentals can be. We had just stayed at a five star resort in Waikoloa and we can honestly say we felt more comfortable at Pele's Secret Garden.

Peggy, the owner, was very easy to deal with. She even emailed me when we were there to make sure everything was ok.

Peggy and her home has definitely set the bar very high for us the next time we need a vacation home rental. Really wish we could have spent more than two nights!

All the comforts of home

  • 5 of 5

The house was exactly as it looks in the pictures, very nice. Lots of big windows to take in the rainforest, very secluded location but only a couple miles to the national park and restaurants. Nice to sit on the deck and listen to the sounds of the rainforest in the evening. House was very clean, towels, shampoo, conditioner & soap/body wash provided. Owner left us fresh fruit, juices, coffee and English muffins for breakfast- a nice touch and very appreciated. Be mindful that the Volcano area is really small and secluded. Stock up on snacks before you come. The house had 2 really nice bathrooms with hot water and good water pressure. Beds comfortable. Overall a great experience and I was glad we stayed 2 nights in the area to enjoy the park and to see Akaka Falls and Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on the way there from the west side of the island. Nice house for a family of 4 with teenage children.

Great location to see volcano park

  • 5 of 5

Great convenient location for Volcano National Park - easy to go back and forth from house to park during the day as needed, and getting into the park at night to see the glow from the crater was amazing. Quiet and surrounded by rain forest - nighttime star gazing spectacular. Amenities great- includes fairly well stocked fridge with eggs, juice and English muffins, and the fresh fruit was greatly appreciated. The bar was relatively well populated with liquor though we didn't partake, would be a great unwind after a long day at the park. We loved the hammock though a few strings seemed missing or too spread apart. Hot water did not take long to start up it was fine. The only downside might be the humidity and smell of mildew which did dissipate after running the dehumidifiers in the rooms.

We loved the open floor plan and all the windows and glass sliders around the house - it really opened up the space and the weather was perfect. Nice selection of music on the CD player. All in all a great experience.
