I've always been a mountain girl and spend a lot of time hiking around my home in Alaska. However, I also love the tropics and the ocean, and I am very fascinated by Pele and her volcanic activity. My second home in Hawaii provides a great (warm!) retreat to relax at and from which to explore this incredible island.
Deb purchased this house in 2007
I bought land here after a visit to a friend, though I had not come looking for property. The area has such a wonderful feel: relaxed, warm, friendly, peaceful, wonderful tropical vegetation, close to the fantastic ocean tidepools, and great fresh food markets. I designed the house to capture the trade winds, to withstand the elements, and to provide a wonderful transition from the indoors to outdoors. Once the house was finished in 2007, I chose to share it with others as a vacation rental.
When I spend time at my property, I gather fresh food at the local market, and then settle in to just relax at house, listening to the ocean. Of course, there is usually work for me to do, but I also go out the front door and walk the coast, go snorkeling, and soak in the nearby warm pond. I head off to explore the lava areas - nearby, Volcanoes Nat'l Park, and up Mauna Kea - I visit botanical gardens, hike and do photography. It's a wonderful base for going off on challenging explorations, or just hanging near home and relaxing. If I don't want to eat on my own deck, I partake of the local food at the markets and in the quaint retaurants in Pahoa (10 min away). This is peaceful 'Old' Hawaii - not the place for those who want shopping and night life - it IS the place for rest, relaxation, rejuvenation, and exploration. It's a great place whether one is solo, wanting time with a special someone, or bringing the whole family - or extended family - to enjoy time together in wonderful Hawaii. Come visit. You just might fall in love with the area also!
thank you, really enjoyed our stay. it was wonderful, relaxing and such a beautiful house. will recommend this place to my family and friends. Malama Pono and Malama Aina Mahalo!
Mars was wonderful and we had a great stay! Plenty of room for our family of 5.
Wonderful stay! Great house and we plan on going there again.
Upon driving up & seeing the welcoming hibiscus flowers placed on outside and inside, then walking into the home welcomed by the Hawaiian music and cute tokonoma area for taking off shoes, we felt the aloha.
Comparing this place to other homes we've stayed in, well we have to say... no comparison! We felt SO comfortable & saw not one creepy crawlie inside, the Windows & screened patio built just right to let the trade winds flow through, matching utensils/plate ware, everything was tastefully done.
Location: perfect! we didn't even know there were other ways to get to the tidepools but the pocket laminated maps were a great touch.
only negative which can't be helped was the one neighbor, they like to wake up at 5am and the woman uses outside voice lol. otherwise evenings were very quiet.
We stayed at Kapoho Kaiyo while our place was being treated for termites on the other side of the island. It exceeded our expectations. First, it was immaculate! Hawaii, especially the east side can be moist and buggy at times. The house was virtually bug free except for a few critters that are to be expected in the tropics and those were only on the ceiling at night. I have seen more bugs on the mainland. It was bright and cheerful and furnished with taste. The kitchen was well stocked and we had everything we needed.
It is a short drive into Pahoa where there are several good restaurants. Don't miss Kaleo's restaurant there. We were within a nice drive of the National Park and got to see the volcano glow right at dusk. Take the time to drive Chain of Crater's Road. It is spectacular even in the rain. Uncle Robert's in Kalapana was a fun adventure on Wednesday night. The warm pond was a 5 minute drive and well worth the experience. Floating there is like no other place. The frogs at night were not a problem for us as we like their voices.
The owner was very easy to work with and promptly refunded our deposit. Mars, the local contact, was so helpful and friendly but not at all intrusive.
We loved the airiness and open feeling of the house and there is plenty of room. We are looking forward to coming back and staying there. It is such a stark contrast with its lushness and greenery to the also beautiful, west side of the island with its open space and lava fields. You won't go wrong staying here!!
My friend, her four-year-old and I stayed here for three days. It was perfect. The kitchen was stocked with everything that we needed, the beds were comfortable, it was super clean, and it felt like home. Between the trade winds and house fans, the house was always at a nice temperature. The neighborhood felt super safe and all the neighbors waved as we walked past. It was a short walk and four-year-old friendly walk to the tide pools and the Champagne pond. The closet full of boogie boards, noodle and water shoes was awesome! Book the house, you will love it.
Great property in a fantastic location. The house is comfortable and has everything you would need including extras such as beach equipment. The location couldn't have been better. Walking distance to the tidal pools and not too far from the thermal pool. First time visitor but would happily recommend to others.
Volcanic heated salt water pond for swimming/soaking nearby, volcanic heated steam caves nearby, 45 minutes to Volcanoes National Park--currently 20 minutes to nearby lava flow viewing, tropical botanical gardens. #HVNP
