About Steve Michelson
Originally from New York I fell in love with the Bay Area while visiting in the late 1960's. I'm from a media family and have been a documentary filmmaker and film distributor in the Bay Area for over 40 years now and still going strong. Currently I run a non profit that supports the engagement activities around films on the environment, social justice, health and sustainability. I've travelled all over the world and have an extensive background in adventure travel. I've always felt the Bay Area was a perfect home base.
Steve Michelson purchased this Farmhouse in 1974
Why Steve Michelson chose Half Moon Bay
There aren't many places in the world where you can live in a secluded and natural environment yet be as close to a major metropolitan center like the San Francisco Bay Area. Lobitos Creek Ranch is surrounded by thousands of acres protected by land trusts, county and state parks. It is only minutes from unpopulated beaches, Redwood forests and fantastic vistas of the Northern California coast. The Ranch has so many fun features including trails, horses and cows, a hot tub, sauna, screening room/theater an outdoor shower. It's a perfect place for a family reunion or gathering of any kind. While it sleeps 6-8 one can add on by booking the Bunkhouse or the soon to be completed Canyon View House for groups of 12 or more.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The weather on Northern California's coast is divine. All year round the temperature is moderate. The Ranch is located at an elevation of 1000 ft. above sea level so it is not nearly as prone to fog as most properties by the beach. On hot days in the summer there is always a cool breeze. On cold days in the winter it can be warm and sunny. The rolling hills, the coastal fog, the vibrant sense of nature and wildlife are everywhere. From your base at Lobitos Creek Ranch you will also be able to venture out to enjoy the big city excitement, the culture and the humanity of the Bay Area.

We LOVE this location and ranch house.
We enjoyed a weekend here with local and out of town friends to celebrate our upcoming baby arrival. It was perfect. Great communication, wonderful greeting from the property caretakers, and overall very smooth. The ranch house is rustic and beautiful, with a great central gathering space. We also rented the Bunk house right next door for overflow guests, which worked out great. Will definitely be back!
Great place for a family gathering
This is a cool house for a family gathering. The house has a very nice surround sound system and an awesome home theater. We made lots of memories watching stars on the deck, roasting marshmallows over the fire. Hiking to the hobbit tree was very fun. We had a lovely few days enveloped by the forest and crisp air. Highly recommend! We plan to be back.
I love this place - 2nd stay, last time in bunkhouse.
I absolutely love staying here. The rustic charm reminds me of the 150 year old farm house I grew up in. My husband and I could just sit on the patio in the rocking chairs for hours enjoying the hawks riding the currents, flickers, hummingbirds, etc. On a hike down to the pond we saw several deer grazing. They have horses and I think cows, they were in as it was cold! They also have a fenced in area that we called "our own dog park" - it has horseshoes to play as well! Our family of 8 and 7 dogs enjoyed our time SO much. If you want to get away and just relax around a fire - this is the place!
Amazing Property for Extended Family Holiday Weekend
This is our second visit to Lobitos Creek, once for a girlfriend's birthday weekend and once for Thanksgiving. It was the perfect property for our larger group. This time we rented the Main House and the Bunkhouse together (we even considered renting the third house too as it's just a few steps up the road). We've had a difficult time finding a property that could accommodate us all and also was reasonably priced. Lobitos Creek was perfect! We will definitely be back :)
The property was beautiful. It has amazing views and is so peaceful even though it's really only a few minutes drive off of Highway 1. We were easily able to hike from the property and also take a short drive to the beach.
Steve and the caretakers were so responsive and available for whatever we needed.
Perfect weekend get away
What an amazing gathering place for our family.
Cloudy on Coast but perfect weather 10 minutes away at the Ranch.
Steve was a perfect host
Always great to host a family that can enjoy quality time together.
Great place for a gathering
Wow what a cool place!! Steve and his property care takers, Gio and Sandy, really treat you like family by sharing this beautiful ranch home with you. It’s located up the hill from pumpkin patches, farms, hiking trails, and secluded beaches while still being close to town. The house itself is great! It’s a charming, funky ranch home with plenty of room for the whole family. Great kitchen space. The fireplace is the perfect center piece that you can enjoy from the living room area. The outside deck, fire pit, and lawn makes this a perfect place to have a gathering. We stayed up there all weekend and on Saturday had a catered family dinner with about 35 people in attendance. The place was perfect for that group size. The next day people went for a surf down at San Gregorio state beach, others into halfmoon bay for shopping and breakfast, others headed south for Santa Cruz. If you are ok with being a little bit off the beaten path with more room to stretch out, a little more relaxed vibe while staying in a cool house with plenty of character this is the place for you.
We are located about 25 minutes from Ano Nuevo State Park which from January through March is the location for the spectacle of elephant seal breeding. In October the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival showcases the worlds largest pumpkin mostly weighing over 2000 pounds. We are min
