If you are looking for a private, relaxing vacation getaway, Xcalak is the place for you. Located on Costa Maya's southern most tip, Xcalak is in the last undeveloped area of the Yucatan Coast. Whether you are interested in World Class Diving on the nearby Chinchorro Banks, bonefishing on the Chetumal Bay flats , great snorkeling right in front of our beach or just enjoying the varied wildlife, the area is a nature lovers delight. Located on the Mexican Caribbean 7.8 kilometers north of Xcalak, the house's upper unit has a fully equipped kitchen, a Queen bedroom with a King bed (which can be separate in 2 single beds), a beautifully tiled bath and living room with TV. The dining room (seats 6) has a thatched roof which opens on to a beautiful terrace. A large master bedroom with it’s own personal bathroom and patio has been added to the apartment. It features a king bed which can become 2 separate single beds and a single futon. Facing the sea, one accesses the beach patio by a slider. The house's environment: Besides being a beachfront property, behind the house's garden, there is a lake (laguna) which is great for kayaking and fishing. Theses 'lagunas' are home to many different species both aquatic (bonefish, baby tarpon, ...) and land (birds, small crocodiles, ...). The Xcalak area is know for its flyfishing and generally for fishing. It is also a superbe area for diving with its great barrier reef and with 'Banco Chinchorro', an atoll 2 1/2 hours away by boat. The island of San Pedro, Belize is only a 1 1/2 hour boat ride away and makes an interesting day trip as does Mahahual , a town 60 km north of Xcalak. Finally the Mayan ruins of Chaccoben are only 2 hours away.
Further information: The house is located in a marine park. Upon arrival, please stop at XTC Dive Centre to purchase your entry bracelet. XTC is found on the beach road to your left when leaving Xcalak.
Philippe is French and Gisele is Canadian. They work in France in the entertainment business doing cultural shows.
Gisele Muller purchased this villa in 2007
We chose to buy in Xcalak and more particularly Casa Caracola because the snorkelling is fantastic right off the beach in front of the house. There are many coral heads there and the reef is not for off.
Philippe loves the sea and they both spend much of their time doing water activities such as snorkelling and free diving.
The other positive point is that the area is very peaceful and relaxing. It is truly a unique and authentic spot.
Un cadre enchanteur
Un havre de quiétude
Un accueil tres chaleureux
Une maison magnifique
C’est ce que nous avons trouvé
À la Casa Caracola.
Merci Gisele & Philipe
Pour cette magnifique étape,
cette découverte de la mer et de la region.
Merci aux gardiens pour leur gentillesse et leur efficactié,
Entretien de la maison, la peche et les petits plats succulents.
We enjoyed our stay at Casa Caracola. The house is clean, comfortable, and well equipped. The picutures on the web site are accurate. The beach is beautiful and the water an amazing color as viewed from the upstairs deck. We enjoyed hanging out on the deck in the sun and at night to view the stars. The road from Xcalak to the house is pretty rough and takes about 20 minutes for 8km so going to one of the few restaurants is not a quick trip. We ate in that worked well for us. The snorkeling was fun and we only got to take the kayaks out once because of the wind. We had fun scuba diving with XTC. There was an issue of a break-in several houses down one night and a nice neighbor informed us so we were sure to lock the door and accessible window at night. A safe is provided for valuables and we had no problems. Casa Caracola was a great place for us to stay in Xcalak. Thanks Gisele!
I hesitate to write this review only because I would prefer to keep this location as much to myself as possible. We (my wife and I, our 22 year old daughter and 13 year old son) stayed at Casa Caracola for 10 nights and I can't wait until we return. Everything you have or will read in other reviews about this place and Phillipe & Gisele, the owners is spot on. But mere words will never do the Casa or its hosts justice. You have to experience it. Now that said, Xcalak is not a destination geared to the average vacationer. You should be the kind of traveler that likes to get away from the tourist traps, is willing to spend a bit more for a authentic experience and be able to appreciate nature in all its raw and sometimes unpredictable beauty. Come with that attitude and your patience will be more than rewarded. Gisele and Phillipe have gone above and beyond to create an environment that lets you explore the natural beauty of this unique part of the world. They are very knowledgeable about the aquatic and bird life that is indiscriminate in its variety. Phillipe has built an "aquarium" just a few meters off the beach which has become a gathering place for a plethora of fish, small and large. He feeds them daily and may even let you join him if you're a good guest! Now bigger species are starting to become curious about this spot ... on our first day a stingray swam several circles around my wife before retreating, the first time, according to Phillipe that one of these creatures has come in so close. Just beyond the aquarium and under a submerged boat lives a moray eel. Very shy but he was coaxed out one afternoon for us to see up close and personal. Further out under the coral we came across a nurse shark resting on the ocean floor, spade fish, jack and all kinds of tiny, rainbow colored fish darting in and out of the reef. Casa Caracola is situated between the ocean and a large lagoon which we did not have time to explore. Next time I hope to take a kayak around the edge of the lagoon with Phillipe so he can show me the underground channels fish use to migrate from the lagoon into the sea. And when you are weary of exploring the Casa is a glorious place to relax ... in the master bedroom with wide screen view of the ocean and sky, two separate decks where you can lounge in sun or the shade of a palapa and your own private rooftop aerie which provides an unimpeded 360 degree view of the lush surroundings. Do not hesitate to book in here.
The decision to stay at Casa Caracola was the best decision we have made in a long time.
The owners, Phillipe and Gisele is wonderful people. The property is immaculate, the house is gorgeous. A lot of attention is given to each detail of the house, from the furniture, that Phillipe makes, to Gisele's decoration of the rooms. The master bedroom on the top floor is gorgeous, some days I did not even want to leave the porch just outside the room, the view is stunning. We wanted a table up there to have dinner in the evening, and within minutes, we had a table. We cannot thank you enough.
The caretakers, Teo and Luz, are wonderful and so kind. They cooked us a few phenomenal dinners, took my husband and I fishing on the lake, they were always friendly and helpful, even if we had a language barrier, Gisele was always there to translate. I was also an honor to meet them.
Sunrise was our favorite time of the day, having coffee on the porch at 6:15 in the morning, just stunning. Moonrise over Xcalak is so special. When there is no moon, you have to lie on your back on roof and watch the stars, there are gazillions of stars.
We stayed for two weeks, two weeks of pure bliss, enjoyment and relaxation. We loved every minute.
Thank you for allowing us to stay at your home and become part of your family.
if previous reviews haven't already convinced you... The property overview speaks for itself. Everything is as advertised.
I haven't stayed on a hotel on vacation or for business since my first vacation home rental in 2011, so my experience covers time, place, property, and homeowner. I have never been disappointed, but in Casa CaraCola, I could not find finer.
Phillipe and Giselle graciously share the majesty of their paradise. From snorkeling adventures, to coconuts, to travel and recreational recommendations, and their "boys".
While some vacations I may go nonstop from sunrise to sunset, others are about relaxation, decompression, and centering. This one was all about the later, and it was, in every way... Perfect.
I look toward to a little more snorkeling experience on my return. As well as my goal to dive. Until then, my friends.... For all that you do, and for all that you are.
Thank you again for sharing with me, the grandeur that nature shares with all of us.
All my very best to you,
I hope to see you this fall!
The house was just as described, cleaned daily, one of the best parts were how well the owners took care of our needs, Giselle and Phillip live below us, and the first day we arrived phillip brouoght us to coconuts with straws in them, I had a once out of each one and replaced with rum, and mentioned to him i liked them, after which they arrived dayly at cocktail time. Phillip and Giselle both love to snorkel, and they either went with me or I with them. I am a very picky snorkeler, and can actually agree that the snorkelling was great right out front of the house, lots of coral heads with all sorts of beautiful colored fish, i was lucky to see a large batwing ray, and some barricuda. The caretakers Teo and Luz were great as well.I had a blown fuse in the car, which controled power for my GPS, and Teo found me one. I cant say enough good things about this place you wont e dissapointed.

We spent 5 nights at Casa Caracol and everything was perfect! The house is wonderful, there are two large double rooms, one of which is better then a 5 stars hotel; the other one has every little comfort that you would need (we prefer hard matrass and this one was a bit too soft for us - the only recommendation we have is to change it). The view from the terraces is priceless; you have at any time of the day a small paradise just for your self. Also the daily cleaning service was something we really appreciated. We met Philip (the owner) and he was extremely lovely and took very good care of us: from refreshing us with fresh coco juice at the beach, to preparing us a delicious dinner (1 kg of lobster) for New Years Eve. The four of us are very happy about the time we spend at Casa Caracol and wish to come back very soon.
Casa Caracola is 7.8 km north of Xcalak, right on the beach. There is a lake behind the property.
Other Activities: kayaking, bird watching
