|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Quail Ranch is a very private, dog friendly and quiet place for those seeking comfort and serenity but also just minutes from shopping, galleries and restaurants in Fort Bragg and Mendocino. Relax on the back deck with a drink while viewing the lake, ocean and mountains. Quail Ranch is paradise!
This is a two bedroom, one and one-half bathroom, single story, beautifully decorated home in western style. There are thick, luxurious mattresses on the 2 queen beds. The interior features Mexican and southwestern decor and furniture, including the oil paintings and other artifacts.
There's a dishwasher, double oven, washer/dryer, woodstove, central heat, HDTV, DVD, Smart TV, CD, Wireless Internet with Cable Modem . There's a 2 car, attached garage, private front courtyard, completely fenced and gated with table, chairs and chiminea. Wide furnished decks wrap around the back and side. The ranch style house sits on 3 acres of woods and gardens with a bubbly creek running through it.
This is a perfect place to bring your well behaved dog since the property is completely enclosed by fences. Dogs must be friendly with people and other dogs.
The property borders Mackerricher State Park and Lake Cleone, with a short path leading to the nature trail that winds around the lake and to the ocean beach, just a few minutes away. Quail Ranch is less than a quarter of a mile from Horse rental and boarding stables.
Lake Cleone is stocked with bass and trout and has a launch ramp for small motorless boats, i.e., rowboats, kayaks, canoes and sailboats. River otters may entertain you with their comical water antics and their love for play. Many egrets, blue heron and osprey may be observed while hiking around the beautiful nature trail that winds around the lake and to the ocean.
Mackerricher State Park boasts its pristine, uncrowded, sandy beaches, magnificent cliffs and waves of wildflowers. Shorebirds galore feed along the 10 miles of beach that stretch north of Fort Bragg to 10 Mile River. The boardwalk to Laguna Point will provide an easy walk out to observe the Harbor seals, snoozing on the rocks or feeding in the ocean at the end of the pier. If the time is right, you may also see whales during their migration. Cormorants and Oystercatchers and many other seabirds are plentiful to view.
The owner purchased the property in 1995 for her private home. The house and gardens were renovated throughout the years and became known as Quail Ranch since its heavily populated with quail. Several years ago Quail Ranch became a part time vacation rental. The home is kept as it is used by the owner. Personal artifacts, photos, paintings, books, magazines remain in the house for your enjoyment.
One or two well behaved , friendly dogs are very welcome. They must be compatible with other dogs since my dogs may be on the same property.
Nancy McCarthy purchased this house in 1995
The Northern Coast of Mendocino is breathtaking! You can experience Mother Nature's very best along the Pacific Ocean with it's wild surf, great variety of wildlife and an incredible feeling of freedom.
You can view the ocean and lake from all rooms in the house except the front bedroom
From Quail Ranch you can view the infinite number of moods that the ocean churns out, the wildlife and beauty and serenity of Lake Cleone. You can fish, canoe, kayak, or paddle a boat on the lake. You can hike along the ocean, through the forest or walk the ocean path into Fort Bragg. You can experience the beauty of the gardens, watch the deer, birds and other wildlife at Quail Ranch, enjoy the privacy, seclusion and quietness of the completely enclosed property. There is no smoking on the property.
We are grateful we had a chance to share this magical Spot on this miraculous planet, even for a brief time. You have created a wellcoming, comforting space, from your engaging artwork to the enveloping furniture to the lovely grounds.
FOR DOG LOVERS, we recommend Ten Mile Beach up the coast a few miles and Lulu and Toulouse Wineries in Philo. Great wine, fun people and dog friendly.
And for take-out supper, we recommend Piaci in Fort Bragg. Elegant piazzas, delicious Mac and cheese. Also a great place for long walks with dog, plus a visual feast: Mendocino Botanical Gardens south of Fort Bragg. We spent half a day wandering the trails. Enjoy!!
This is my second stay and everything was great, as it was before. The house has a fine ambiance, with a western theme. The two minature ponies came by, along with Nancy's two darling dogs, Shilo and Lasso. What is great about the house is that you are fine when the weather is nice and you can go ouside (the ocean is walking distance), but it is also OK to get "stuck" inside and watch the ocean (or movies on the TV) while the fireplace is crackling. One of the best stocked houses I have stayed at if you want to cook or bring in stuff from the grocery stores or a restaurent. Something for everyone,: adult, children, pets, everyone.
This house works very well if you had another couple or kids that wanted to run around on their own. Can't recommend it highly enough.
This was our third visit to Quail Ranch. While not fancy, we love spending time here with our dogs. It's easy access to the lake and the ocean. The yard is completely fenced for the dogs. The view of the lake and the ocean is wonderful. We will return.
We really enjoyed this property. It is very homey and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with a large work island and large eating table
Having had many experiences in which on-line descriptions of accommodations were deceptive or disappointing I was wary when I booked Quail Ranch, but our stay could not have been more perfect. Nancy has created a soothing and nurturing environment that’s even better than what it appears to be in the on-line descriptions. It's fairly secluded so we felt like we were tucked away in our own little world. Her home is lovely, welcoming, and very comfortable and the property is beautiful and well maintained. Nancy was very respectful of our privacy, but was available to us by phone and within walking distance. Our dog Tucker was welcomed and allowed to play with her dogs, Lasso and Shiloh, at our request. Watching her miniature horses, April and Cassie, graze on the property contributed to the peaceful atmosphere. It’s obvious that Nancy has put a lot of thought into creating this experience, from the wonderful décor to the amazingly comfortable beds to the kitchen that’s fully stocked with everything that was needed to cook and reheat the food that we brought … I can’t rave about this experience enough – you won’t be disappointed!!!
We didn’t eat out a whole lot, but really enjoyed Eggheads for breakfast. We ended up at Cafe Del Mar for my birthday dinner when Cucina Verona lost our reservation – that was lucky for us as the food at Café Del Mar was great and the staff was fun and friendly. The Berry Banana Crepes at Cafe Jaavy deserve a special mention as does the authentic Mexican breakfast that my sister raved about. We enjoyed an afternoon in Mendocino and I wished we had set more time aside to visit there. The one disappointment was that the beaches in Fort Bragg renowned for their sea glass (and why I chose Fort Bragg for our vacation!) don’t actually have that much glass anymore. To be fair, on our last morning, we stopped by the Sea Glass museum and the owner said that there are some beaches were there’s more glass, but we didn’t get to see them and it sounded like they may be a bit physically challenging to get to. A couple of traveling notes for those unfamiliar with the area: If you’re traveling south avoid Rt1 unless you like long, VERY twisty roads - we drove it in the dark and it was a nightmare after a very long day of traveling. State Highway 20 to 101 was twisty and slow going at times, it was much better than Route 1. Also, it’s best to arrive at Quail Ranch in the daylight as it’s a bit difficult to find in the dark.
This was our 2nd visit to Quail Ranch. It was even better than we remembered from the 1st visit. We brough our two 5 yr old dogs with us and had a very relaxing time. The property was very clean and comfortable for us and we even got to use the wood stove since it rained on and off for a few days. We had all the cooking items I needed even though two of the four stovetop knobs were broken which the owner told us about before it was an issue: it was easily remedied by using either of the two intact knobs to use any burner I needed. I am sure the stove has all four knobs now! The owner is very kind and thoughtful; we enjoyed her company when we had a chance to visit with her but she was not intrusive. We were in need of some down time from a very busy year and this was just right for us: the dogs had a safe and roomy yard to run around in, we had lovely views of the sky, ocean, trees and landscaping plus we enjoyed being able to walk to MacKerricher State Park along Lake Cleone. No car needed! But on days when we were tired, we did drive to the parking lot by Lake Cleone and found we were not too tired to walk along Haul Rd watching the exciting waves and surf. Having somewhat stormy and rainy weather was a plus for us and we enjoyed it more than we could have imagined. My husband even said that he may not even want to come back in sunny and calm weather after all that excitement. We took hundreds of photos, got very tired, slept well and loved every minute. We returned home relaxed and ready to charge back into our busy lives. Thank you, Quail Ranch, for a restful and peaceful vacation. This is a place we can recommend and will return to again, very soon.
This is a great place to lay back and relax, with other options if you prefer. Fort Bragg is close by for restaurants or food stores if you prefer to cook for yourself. Only a short hike to the ocean on a private/state property trail. Nancy is a very friendly host; there to help but very unobtrusive if you just want to be by yourself. Extremely dog-friendly with a fenced-in yard. House is very well stocked. Don't worry about the weather as there are comfortable sofas and a fireplace for rainy days. I will definitely be returning.
