About Stephen

The villa was originally built as a jungle guest house by my uncle. We have enlarged the hiking trail network and gardens and converted the property to a vacation rental. I still have full time work in Florida but enjoy as much time off as I can get in the jungles of Costa Rica.

Stephen purchased this villa in 2007

Why Stephen chose Puntarenas

Our location is key - a secluded tropical mountain setting yet close to the ocean and town. The area is secure and access is easy. In addition, the temperature is moderate here at the higher altitude and the variety of wildlife is amazing.

What makes this villa unique

Set on 60 acres of private tropical forest with jungle swimming pools and waterfalls make this property unique. We have hiking trails to access the natural wonders around us. There is a full staff to insure your comfort. Our concierge comes each morning to cook breakfast and is available to help arrange the days activities. Housekeepers tidy up each day and there is 24 hours per day security. The cooks will come each evening on request and charge just a very modest fee,

Our concierge services are included with the rental. he can arrange passenger van shuttle for guests going to/from the airport, beach or activities. He is expert in arranging local adventures and activities, meals, and transportation. We provide a local cell phone for your use during your stay should you have difficulties away form the house you can call Pablo for help. He is available 24 hours for any urgency.

Jungle paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Trip of a lifetime for our family of 4 along with 3 other families (13 in our group). The villa was spectacular. It was offered seclusion and privacy with reasonable access to stores and good restaurants. The views from the villa were breathtaking. My favourite place to sit each morning was the 2nd floor balcony. Each morning we awakened to the sound of birds and howler monkeys. My husband even got up close to a sloth one morning that had climbed down to the ground just up the road from the villa!

The waterfalls at the villa are beautiful and are a short hike away (10 min). The pool was always the perfect temperature and our evenings usually ended with some time in the hot tub.

Pablo made the trip seamless from organizing our pickup and return to our hotel in San Jose to having our rental cars delivered and picked up from the villa. We were in regular contact from September when we booked to our trip in December. He answered our questions, pre-booked our excursions to zip-lining, whitewater rafting and horseback riding. He made good restaurant recommendations, helped us shop, made delicious breakfasts and came as our tour guide to the national park. Night time staff were always around and helped with whatever we needed.

Patricia and her staff prepared delicious meals for us at the villa the first couple of nights and even worked with us to create our own New Years menu. Cleaning staff left the rooms and villa in great shape each day.

We planned 2 travel days around the week long stay at the villa which turned out to be a good idea as it is a bit of a trip by van from San Jose to the villa (3-4 hrs depending on traffic). By doing this we weren't rushed as were able to pick up groceries and stop for lunch. On the way back to San Jose we took the coastal route and got to see crocodile bridge.

All of the excursions were good. Our family probably enjoyed the rafting the best overall. Also, while I didn't get to this waterfall myself, my husband, son and friends went to ECO-CHONTALAS, about 20km from the villa (suspension bridges and billygoat paths as my husband put it) but you could swim at the base of the waterfall and it was a spectacular site.

We chose this villa based on a recommendation from friends of ours that had stayed there and it did not disappoint. I would love to come back another time!

Thanks for the great memories!

Awesome holiday property

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful mountain retreat! Fantastic view and very clean villa with wonderful gardens. Breakfast with toucans was always a treat. We visited with 13 family and friends.( eight adults and 5 teenagers). The teenagers liked having the 3rd floor loft for their sleeping quarters. Thanks Pablo for arranging top notch excursions (rafting, zip lining, horseback riding to the waterfalls), a shuttle to and from San Jose and rental cars delivered to the villa. Made our holiday hassle free. Pablo helped with shopping, touring and buying the best fireworks display to welcome in the New Year. Any concerns around the villa were quickly addressed by Pablo and staff. Pablo even tracked down a forgotten tablet and Steve is arranging to have it returned to us. Wonderful customer service!

Nice private location

  • 4 of 5

Property was beautiful. Getting to it was difficult as we arrived after dark. Villa was not searchable on GPS so I recommend searching Mirador Los Chorros - A restaurant in Alfombra about 10 minutes from the Villa. Call Pablo once you arrive there and he will happily meet you and guide you to villa. Also happens to be a great restaurant to watch a sunset! Drive along coastal highway was an easy 3 hour drive. Have small US bills for the 2 toll booths. Both our vehicles got ripped off on the change. Turn onto 243 for about 25 minutes. You will be happy you got the 4x4 car rental for the last 12 minutes on the dirt road. Pablo was helpful in recommending beaches and restaurants and activities. Playa Linda was nice and quiet but no restaurants or shops. Playa Dominical turned into our go to beach with plenty of restaurants and surf shops. Surf Boards are $10/day and boogie boards are $5/day. Parked right beside the beach so we didn't have any issues with theft. Hiked to the waterfalls on the property. Very beautiful and our 3 grandchildren (4,5 and 8) managed the hike and played in the creek for quite a while. Our group of 9 went zip lining at flight of the toucan ($45 each) plus $8 for the nature hike which was the only place in Costa Rica that we saw monkeys, sloths and a toucan. We ate at the villa 2 nights. Patricia is a very good cook. $20 per person for a 3 course meal was good value. Plenty of restaurants between villa and Dominical. Don't worry about the outside appearance of the restaurant. Food was good everywhere. Bring small American bills as only the tour operators will take 50 and 100 dollar bills. Exchange for $1 us is approximately 500 colons. You will not get us bills back and you will get ripped of on exchange so keep your payments as close to the cost as possible without getting too much change back. Nobody ever appeared to expect a tip but they were greatful to recieve them. Service was always good and cost was always low. They really want your business.

Save $29us for the airport departure tax. Overall we had a very good experience. The people were friendly and we felt safe everywhere we went. We'll be back to costa rica again some day.

Owner's Response: We are very glad you to hear you enjoyed your stay at Villa Los Aires and Patricia's cooking. The villa is easily found on Google maps and Waze and the driving directions provided are perfect. Perhaps not so on a GPS rented at the car rental company office. Better to save the money spent on the rental GPS and use smart phone apps. The Kolbi company has a desk at baggage claim in the SJO airport If your smart phone is unlocked you can purchase a chip for $10 and have local phone and internet all week. It is by far the best option. When traveling to CR, as with traveling in any foreign country, we recommend to have at least a small supply of local currency. In Costa Rica the current official exchange rate is 550 Colones to one UD Dollar. Many places in CR will accept dollars but one cannot guarantee at what rate they will change them for you - and they will definitely give change in Colones. There are a number of ATM machines in the airport and one can use a US debit card to take local currency. We recommend getting Colones before leaving the airport and heading to the villa. The Departure Tax is already included in most tickets - unless one is flying on one of the low cost or non US carriers. American, United and Delta, Avianca, Copa, British and Iberia all definitely now include the departure tax in your ticket. If not already included in the ticket/fees/taxes paid then plan ahead and arrive a few minutes early to purchase the departure tax - currently $29. They accept Dollars and/or Colones or any combination of the two It is a good way to spend any remaining Colones that would otherwise be wasted outside the country. They give change in US Dollars. Our concierge Pablo is glad to help answer any questions about or arrange local adventures, cooks, groceries, transportation etc and his services are included free with your stay. Pura Vida!

A jungle retreat......starring PABLO.

  • 5 of 5

What you see is what you get....a true jungle retreat. The villa was kept immaculate, Patricia prepared meals like a chef, security was outsanding with someone available on the property at all times, and PABLO. A man who is the pinnacle of tourism. With an update of bedding and some new furniture, the villa would be perfect, but we would have missed the true Costa Rica if we stayed in a resort. Our family is so very thankful that we were able to spend Thanksgiving with the toucans, mountains, waterfalls, monkeys, sloths and the caring people of Costa Rica.

Owner's Response: Hello Marilyn, I am pleased to hear that you had a memorable TG in Costa Rica and enjoyed your stay at Los Aires. Pablo is certainly one of our greatest assets - I will pass along your kind words. I was hoping to get one more season out of the sofas in the great room but it appears that they are due for a recovering sooner than that. I will have the bedding changed out immediately - please let me know which room(s) was inadequate and if it was the mattress/pillows/sheets/blankets. The last time I stayed in the Pasifor suite and slept quite comfortably but I have to admit I have not tried them all in some time! We aim to exceed our guests expectations so I thank you for your valuable input. Pura Vida and Feliz Navidad! Stephen info@LosAiresCR.com or call me at 1.813.784.7930

Amazing...Just like the pictures (maybe better)!

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful just as in the pictures. Amazing views of the mountains. It was super spacious the 7 women on our trip. Pablo (the concierge) was beyond amazing and helpful. He will help you every step of the way, no worries. We enjoyed dinner at the house two nights, dinner at an amazing restaurant Ricar 2, and we had a BBQ the last night. ATVs and horseback riding to the waterfall is a must!

I highly recommend hiring Johnny the driver to take you from the airport to the house (its about a 3.5 hour drive from San Jose Airport). We rented a car for the trip, which was super easy. It was delivered and picked up from the house. Just a warning the roads are very rough going into the house and the main roads are small and extremely curvy. At night it gets very foggy and that doesn't help. But overall its a doable drive, just have to get used to it.

Excellent trip...Amazing home!
