About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + loft room + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-5)

LOCATED IN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT OF MENDOCINO, unlike many so called 'Mendocino' listings that are miles from town. The Tower offers well-appointed accommodations for 1 or 2 couples or a small group with pretty garden and ocean views. Stretch your travel budget by preparing some of your meals in the cheerful kitchen or walk to one of the fine local restaurants. The fenced garden creates a peaceful environment and accommodates bikes, kayaks, supervised pets and children. Smoke-Free environment. Check our website (below) for additional photos.

At this writing, the nearby Botanical garden is alive with birds and pollinators. Book now for a fall getaway, Festival of Lights starting Thanksgiving weekend, and for whale watching later in the winter.

About Wendy and Don Roberts

Innkeepers Don and Wendy Roberts purchased the historic Bever House in 1989 and re-built the adjacent water tower two years later as a unique guest house in the heart of Mendocino's National Historic District. Recently retired from Stanford University's Communiction Department, Don continues his writing and consults on children's television program. Wendy applies her non-profit management skills to various local endeavors, coordinates the County's Master Gardener Program and serves on the Advisory Board for County tourism promotion.

Why Wendy and Don Roberts chose North Coast California

Living near the ocean has always been a priority for us and the Village of Mendocino won our hearts because of the spectacular bluff top setting and the rural community with its strong focus on the arts and on preservation of the town and its natural environment. It's a privilege to live here and welcome others to this very special place.

What makes this cottage unique

Staying in the heart of Mendocino Village allows our guests to enjoy its scenic beauty and share the slower pace and peaceful spirit of our rural community. Comfortable shoes are welcome wherever one goes...from one of the excellent restaurants, to a whale watching cruise, a hike up Big River, a Music Festival concert, Film Festival screening, Writer's Conference seminar...or just prop them up on our tree stump 'footrest' and lounge on the Tower porch with a good book.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We've stayed in dozens of places in Mendocino in the past 30 years, but the tower has been one of our faves.

Unique and Cozy

  • 5 of 5

Accommodations at the Tower are unique and cozy. A staircase leads to the second floor bedroom, and from there, a ladder leads to the Tower bedroom, which has 360-degree views of the Village and ocean. The living room was comfortable and cozy with it's' view of the garden, and the kitchen was well equipped.

Always love the Tower

  • 5 of 5

We've visited this property since it was first available and always find it a cozy home base for enjoying Mendocino and day trips to wineries, the Redwoods, and special hikes like those on the Stornetta lands along the bluffs between Point Arena and its historic Lighthouse. It takes a few days to cover the Botanical Garden, Skunk Train, whale watching from Point Cabrillo Lighthouse. That gives us a chance to explore menus at several local restaurants, starting with Little River Inn. The Tower, itself, offers a well-equipped kitchen for dining in or putting together picnics. Great little town, great place to lay our heads.

Beautiful garden

  • 5 of 5

We had two adults and two small children and we found the unit to be a little small for us. There is a sofa bed on the main level. The kitchen is well stocked. We found that the heat didn't travel well to the third level.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the varied perspectives of our guests in the Tower. Given the inclement weather during your stay, I can imagine it feeling crowded with two youngsters. I'm sorry you didn't let us know that you needed more heat on the third level. We could have directed you to the electric heaters we keep in the bedroom closet to ensure that everyone stays cozy.

Unique property

  • 4 of 5

Great location to town. The owners have everything you need. They are right next door in case you need them. It is an older property so the carpet and bedding looks it. The heat didn't travel to the top level well so it was cold. The garden is lovely.

Owner's Response: Thank you for choosing the Tower for your family visit. We're glad you had an enjoyable stay despite the wet weather. Just sorry that you didn't let us know that you were feeling cold so we could have pointed you to the heater we keep in the bedroom closet for use on the upper levels when the forced air furnace doesn't quite reach. We appreciate your thoughtful review to help us better meet the needs of future guests.

Tranquility in Mendocino

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely and rather unique property with gorgeous views from the secure rooftop platform. We found it clean, comfortable and very well appointed. It is in a quiet location yet only a two block walk to the local pub, grocery store and coffee shops. It is also just a few miles from Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, which is a must see for its museum and stunning views of the coast. I commend the owners for the detailed notes they left about the rental so everything was clear on day one. I am pleased to give this vacation rental a full recommendation.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your thoughtful and positive review of the Tower and your tip for others about including a visit to Pt. Cabrillo Light Station. The walk down from the main parking lot is a bird watchers dream and in the coming months, it will be one of the prime locations for whale watching. For those with a handicapped placard, it offers welcome access to unrivaled views at bluff top picnic tables.

Perfect location, perfect cottage

  • 5 of 5

Once again, we had a wonderful stay at this cottage in the village of Mendocino. The location is perfect with no need to drive to restaurants, shops or hikes along the bluffs.
