This 3000 square foot, post & beam home is less than 10 years old. Five stunning ocean and sound beaches are within biking distance or a short car ride of this beautiful three-story house, situated on 2 acres of beetlebung groves and oak trees.
The house melds modern conveniences with traditional farmhouse style: great room with flat screen TV and fireplace; fully-equipped modern kitchen with wood-fired bread and pizza oven; sprawling master bedroom suite with cathedral ceilings and cast-iron whirlpool tub embedded in a platform of hand-picked Aquinnah sea stones. French doors off the master bedroom lead to a private balcony in the trees.
In addition to two other guest bedrooms, the house features a walk-out lower level with two semi-private sleeping areas, a separate kitchen, family room, full bath and patio. A second family, guests or help can have privacy as well as room to spread out.
For ultimate convenience, the home is equipped with wireless high-speed internet service, cable with DVR, and cell reception booster.
More Features: The fully-equipped kitchen has all the modern conveniences and was designed with function in mind. Lots of counter space for preparing quick meals or elaborate dinners. A large deck off the great room overlooks a completely private yard consisting of native island trees and features Adirondack chairs and side tables, a Weber grill and an inviting chaise lounge.
Cooking spices, linens, bath & beach towels, beach chairs and toys, and laundry detergent are just a few of the things you won't need to bring, as every detail is attended to.
You can sleep up to 10 comfortably with three queen-sized and four twin beds. In addition to four bedrooms, there is a semi-private loft overlooking one of the bedrooms with a separate entrance. Each of the three levels of the house has a full bath, plus an additional half-bath powder room on the main floor and an outdoor shower with hot and cold water.
Radiant floor heating, a wood-burning stove, and two fireplaces make for a magical winter getaway as well.
Beaches: The house is just a mile and a half from exclusive Philbin Beach, one of the few places on the east coast you can see the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean. Walk from Philbin to adjoining Moshup Beach and the world-famous Gay Head Cliffs, named one of the world's best beaches by the Travel Channel. Lobsterville and West Basin beaches are on the Vineyard Sound side of Aquinnah and offer swimming, sunsets and fabulous fishing. Red Beach offers a gentle surf for kids, a kayak launching point and tide pools galore. Access to these three beaches is included with the rental. Philbin Beach is open to Aquinnah residents and renters only, with purchase of a weekly parking permit from the town (no permit needed for bikes).
Even closer: Take a stroll to the Sargent Gallery (formerly Gayhead Gallery) for a wine and cheese reception, or walk to the Orange Peel Bakery for coffee, baked goods or their famed Pizza Night. The Aquinnah Public Library and town playground are also a short walk from the house.
Aquinnah: For those looking to completely escape, the night sky in Aquinnah is truly amazing. Situated on the tip of the Island, the band of the Milky Way is visible on any clear night. Aquinnah, formerly known as Gay Head of Moby Dick fame, is one of the few truly rural escapes remaining on Martha's Vineyard.
I stayed at this home with my family of 4, my sister's family of 4, and our parents. My aunt joined us for a few days too. It is a perfect layout for multiple families as there is a separate living quarters in the lower level, complete with kitchette, full bath, living room and two adjoining / semi-private sleeping areas (a queen for the parents on one side, separated by a half-wall, with twin beds for the kids on the other side). The lower level is a walkout basement, so you have good daylight and a door, which leads to the backyard.
The rest of the home is a beautiful post and beam home as pictured, and is very well-kept, nicely decorated and detailed very comfortable. The deck off the dining area was great for grilling and hanging out. The home is in a private location, surrounded by trees, and on a dirt road that is very quiet.
The location is superb, and is in an area that is one of my favorite areas of the island. Aquinnah beach is very close, and visiting Lobsterville beach at the end of West Basin Road gives you a great view of the sunset each night, without the crowds that can gather across the jetty at Menemsha Beach. If you are into paddle sports, a great trip is to put in at West Basin Beach, paddle across Menemsha Pond to Nashaquitsa Pond, and have someone pick you up at the boat ramp on State Road.
Nearby Menemsha village is a great place to get a fishing charter, visit the beach, or pick up some fresh seafood. It is a classic fishing port that is the real deal.
There is so much to do in close proximity and the house is a welcomed place to relax and come back to each day. Doris was also a real pleasure to deal with. She has a book for visitors stocked with good maps, and island info, and menus, which is very appreciated and well used.
Our week was simply fabulous. The house is as pictured but more roomy and has rustic and inviting charm with really comfy beds. The fully stocked kitchen was a pleasure. We enjoyed the three levels with separate spaces for the three small nuclear families in our group.
The location is perfect in my view with easy proximity to cliffs of Aquinnah and to Chilmark, and a bit away from the crowds. We visited all the beaches in our neck of the literal woods! We also visited the all the MV towns that are just 35 minutes away.
The book with maps, recommendations, menus, etc. etc. was very helpful. There were so many fun things to do it is hard to write about them all. BONUS new finds this trip:
1. If there is an oyster enthusiast in your group, we recommend Sweet Neck Farm Oysters, a wholesaler in Edgartown. They are one of a dozen or more oyster farmers in and around Katama Bay helping the environment and delighting us oyster fans! It is run by Jim and Sue Blake. We picked up 3 dozen oysters for $30 at their home where they can keep oysters that they harvested in a special shed out back. Just be prepared with a good oyster shucking knife and any toppings you like on your oysters. (check out article about them on web publication "In a Half Shell").
2. Orange Peel bakery less than 5 minutes from the has delicious and so fresh baked goods and "bring your own toppings" pizza night on Wednesdays which the kids and adults loved.
Occasional creaking and moaning of the house felt like we were visiting with an old friend!

My wife, parents, in-laws and I stayed recently at this lovely house in the woods in Aquinnah and could not have been more pleased with the house and all the wonderful touches the owner, Doris, has put into it. The house has three levels, including a basement with full apartment amenities, and can comfortably sleep up to 10 people. The kitchen is completely stocked with everything you could want and Doris has very thoughtfully included a lot of the things (beach chairs, bath towels, sheets, laundry detergent, soap, olive oil, spices, etc.) that make it seem like home when you are here. The house is beautifully deocrated, with alot of personal touches, that also make it real easy to immediately relax abd enjoy your vacation. The property is expansive and has a real "in the woods setting" that makes it incredibly peaceful and tranquil. It is located very close to the famous Gay head cliffs/lighthouse, the awesome Orange Peel bakery, and incredible Philbin beach. If you're looking to get away from it all, you will love this house and this location on the island.
After staying in several houses on the Vineyard for the past 13 years, we found ourselves in a position of starting from scratch to search for the vacation house that we could return to for the coming years. We were looking for an upisland location at this point, and this house was the perfect location just three minutes from Gayhead beach and on a sleepy road.
I was there with my three children, my husband, my parents, and sister and her partner. There were plenty of rooms, beds, and bathrooms to accommodate everyone, including a separate living room and kitchen area in the basement to offer a little more privacy for part of the family. This included a separate entrance with private patio.
The master suite was large with skylights and gorgeous tub with jets that my kids fought over after returning from the beach! The master bathroom also featured a heat lamp on the ceiling to step out under once done showering.
Of course, one of our many requirements when looking for our perfect place is an outdoor shower! To give you a sense of the attention to detail, citrus scented body soap and lotion were provided. It's the little things that count, and Doris has thought of them all.

I rented this house for one week in mid-June with my family of 3 (and my mother and Aunt also joined us, so we were 5 total -- 4 adults and 1 child, age 9). I was a bit nervous about renting a house with no reviews... Upon arrival, I was elated to find this treasure of a house. The house is located just off State Road offering plenty of privacy and quiet. The house is huge and much nicer than depicted in the photos. The owner was very accommodating and helpful. In addition to being very clean, the house is thoughtfully furnished and well stocked. The beds were very comfortable with nice quality bedding and towels. The house layout is lovely for sunlight and breezes. There is a very nice gas grill on the deck that is well maintained and easy to use. We did not get to use the pizza oven, as it will make the house too hot during the summer months.
I would especially recommend this property for an extended family. The house offers bedrooms across three floors (daylight basement offers a large apartment that sleeps 4 -- with a kitchen and bathroom, the first floor offers a master bedroom suite and a sitting room that can be used as a bedroom, and the 2nd floor offers a bedroom, bathroom and loft area with a twin bed that overlooks the sitting room). The back deck overlooks the woods facing East -- lovely morning sun makes this a great place to drink coffee.
We appreciated the close proximity to Aquinnah beaches and lighthouse and Chilmark and Menemsha were just a short drive away. The house has lots of games, beach toys, bikes, umbrellas, and sand chairs -- everything you need to enjoy the area. If you plan to spend most of your time Up-Island, and you want a peaceful and quiet setting, this house will exceed your expectations.
