About Paula Irving

We enjoy walking our two dogs on the beach and all around the small streets of the island. We love the proximity of the house to the Parker River Wildlife Refuge and to Newburyport for shopping, dining, and other activities. We enjoy cooking, so having Tendercrop Farm just down the road provides us with a great variety of gourmet meats and produce. In town we love the Sunday Farmer’s market at the Tannery; it’s a great place to pick up dinner and peruse the local bookstore and shops. Best of all when we don’t feel like cooking we can walk to the Plum Island Grille, Plum Island Provision, The Cottage, Mad Martha’s or the Beach Coma

Why Paula Irving chose Merrimack Valley & Essex County

After renting this house for two winters we fell in love with it and Plum Island. In fact, we liked it so much here that we bought the house. Now we’ve made this place our getaway. In the summer we retreat to our lake house so we really have the best of both worlds.

What makes this house unique

The most distinct feature about the beach house is the roof-top deck with its breath-taking views of the island. Additionally, the house is located on a quiet side street (open at both ends), so there is very little traffic/noise and the yard is completely fenced-in which is ideal for families with small children or pets. It's a short two-minute walk to the closest beach path where the beach is rarely crowded.

My family had the most wonderful vacation at Paula and John's home this past June. Their house had everything we needed to stay for the week. There are great appliances in the kitchen and we often ate outside on the large deck. The outdoor shower was very convenient after a long day at the beach, which is just a short walk from the house. The fenced yard was perfect for our dog - he felt right at home. The main floor is light and bright and all of the bedrooms have extra sheets. Our two kids (14 and 11) had their own space in the downstairs bedrooms. There are games, books, and beach items as well. Our favorite part of the house is the roof top deck - AMAZING views! The house is clean, comfy and just what we were looking for. Paula and John are very easy to work with and we have already booked this home for next year!

Couldn't have picked a better place

  • 5 of 5

We have already reserved this house for a week in June of 2017. I have lost track but I believe we have rented this property for the past four years. You couldn't ask for a better place to stay. All you need to bring on your vacation are your clothes and food if you plan to cook your meals. See my previous review for our June 2015 vacation. My grandsons who are now 15 and 16 still want to continue this tradition each year. We go kayaking each summer through Plum Island Kayaking which is located in Newburyport. Last year and this year the boys have used paddle boards. What fun.

Another wonderful vacation

  • 5 of 5

We have had such a wonderful experience in the past, we rented this home again for our June 2015 family vacation. The beach is only a few minutes walk so that we can easily come back for lunch, and then return to the beach for the rest of the afternoon. This was our third year renting this home and before our week was up we reserved it for a week in June 2016. My teenage grandchildren (two boys ages 14 and 15) say they want to come year each year forever. There is a basketball court at one end of the island and a wild life sanctuary at the other end. There are a couple of restaurants on the island, a general store and another restaurant on the way into Newburyport. Of course Newburyport has plenty going on to entertain you. Paula and John are always available if you need to reach them, but we have never had to contact them. The house is nicely furnished and you are provided with everything you could possibly need during your vacation including beach towels, beach chairs, and beach umbrellas. Our family is looking forward to next summer's vacation.

Plum Island has got to be one of New England's best kept secrets, and this charming cottage is the perfect place to enjoy it. The owners, Paula and John, have done an absolutely outstanding job in seeing to it that their guests enjoy all the comforts of home. The cottage is spotless and well-appointed with tasteful and stylish furnishings, and offers great outdoor space with the roof deck and rear deck, as well as a nice fenced area for your family pet. The owners were very hospitable and a pleasure to deal with, even checking in with us upon our arrival to make sure we had found everything alright. The only time we were disappointed was when our vacation came to an end and we had to leave. We've already booked for next year! Thank you Paula and John for allowing us to rent your peaceful little getaway.

This was our 2nd visit to this amazing home away from home. We are from WA State and have family in the area so this was the perfect house to relax for a week while having plenty of space to entertain guests. All amenities are included here. They seem to have EVERYTHING you would need without the house seeming crowded. Many windows allow for nice sea breeze to flow day and night. We had an especially hot couple of days when we enjoyed blasting the A/C as well. The decks are where we spent the majority of our time. The lower deck large enough to BBQ and entertain. Upper deck with breathtaking views of ocean and tidal basin is where we spent both coffee and cocktail hour. Spent most days at the beach which is an easy 5 minute walk. Loved rinsing off sand with outdoor HOT shower too! We love this home and plan to return soon!

Best Family Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Spent a full week in this great little house and loved every second of it! We have two little ones and felt very comfortable with the house layout and more than appreciated the extra safety measures (outlet covers, cabinet locks, etc.) The owners were so thoughtful and very quick to respond to any questions we had prior to and during our stay (being able to simply text them was so easy and helpful).

We spent our days at Sandy Point Beach (the best beach ever!!!) and perfect for little ones (if you can find parking). We spent our evenings in Newburyport which had great food options and some yummy ice cream spots as well. The beach by the house was so close that we often went there at night when it was a bit cooler just to play in the sand.

The location was really quite perfect for us! Being minutes from just about everything is exactly what we needed for our little ones. The nice flat screen TV, wifi, updated kitchen and washer and dryer were all extremely wonderful to have as well.

We loved it and can't wait to come back!

Car: recommended

Plum Island is a wonderful vacation spot for couples and families! The 9 mile stretch of beach is one of the most beautiful in the country. We take great pride in ensuring our beach house is idyllic and your vacation there is memorable.

On Plum Island itself, there are fishing, harbor, and whale watching expeditions (northern side of island); the Parker River Wildlife Refuge for bird watching (southern side of island); the Plum Island Grill (dinner); Beach Coma (casual lunch/dinner); Mad Martha's Beach Cafe (breakfast/lunch); and a convenience and package store. The Plum Island Airport, on the causeway leading to the Island, provides aerial plane tours.

Newburyport is a just 3.5 miles away, where there are quaint shops, art galleries, outdoor concerts, live theatre, many restaurants, ample activities and special summer events. Great day trips include Boston, Gloucester, Rockport or historic Portsmouth, NH. There's something for everyone!
