2 miles from Utah Beach in superb location, perfect for couples or sleeps 5 max
This is a stunning 4* house available for rent for short breaks or longer in beautiful Normandy, France. It’s in a fantastic location as it is situated in the heart of the D Day Landing beaches, located right on the village square of Sainte Marie du Mont – the first village to be liberated on D-Day.
With three spacious bedrooms, one with super king bed and ensuite, there is more than enough room for 5 but is also perfect for couples too. With a family bathroom and additional cloakroom, the owners really have thought of making the best of this perfect retreat in the centre of this significant sleepy French town of such importance.
The recently installed claret red AGA is certainly at the heart of this home in the gorgeous french rustic kitchen. The house is also pet-friendly…. with a dog loo in the garden too! The owners can even recommend a vet that speaks perfect English for the passport return journey too.
The Band of Brothers house to rent is so-named because 101st Airborne, that became known as Band of Brothers marched past this house on 7th June 1944 the photograph of this on the Aga splashback.
This three-hundred-year-old property has been lovingly renovated to give modern living in a 300-year-old Normandy house. A holiday home with everything you need for a relaxing break and to match expectations of discerning travellers with home from home touches.
The fantastic location is ideal for tasting a bit of real French village life, visiting the D-Day landing beaches or simply exploring the nearby Normandy Coast.
Included in our price is a printed war tour, for you to do at your own pace, a complete overview of the area, maps, full overview of where to go & what to see, we can organize Jeep Tours, in the house all linens, the beds are made up for you, water, heating, electricity, paper goods, even down to dishwasher tablets and naturally the end of stay clean...an DC Aga for those that love to cook along with a gas hob in the kitchen, microwave, toaster and all appliances you should need.
Located right opposite the world famous Sainte Marie du Mont Church, the view out the bedroom has been described as one of the best in France... you can lie in bed looking at the ornate and unique bell tower, but do not worry the bells stop during the night!
Totally renovated in 2014 while retaining the character and history.
NEW!!!!!!! from mid-April 2018 a new double bedroom ensuite on the 2nd floor, it will be totally contained with its own staircase & a super kingsize bed - the house will then sleep maximum 5 - 2 Super King double rooms & 1 large single room.
Upstairs partitions were knocked out to create the most gloriously proportioned master bedroom, plus a 2nd large double or twin along with a large bathroom room with a substantial Italian walk-in shower, double sink unit plus a loo.
Downstairs we have created an open plan living area, a lounge with a fireplace where we installed a very efficient wood burner, leading into the dining room and onto the kitchen then out to the very sweet high walled garden with BBQ and patio...also downstairs a utility room with washing machine, tumble drier and a separate loo.
Best of all open the front door, one side you have shellfish shop selling oysters and moules direct from Utah Beach, so by just walking the length of the corridor you can return to the dining table with a dozen oysters for less than £/$ 5 - (fresher than any oysters possible as these come less than 4 miles), people come from miles to but these specialist oysters! The other side, 2 restaurants to choose from, across the street a local butcher, 2 bakers in the village, even a hairdresser...
We've tried very hard to beautifully present the house, with restored antique furniture, hand-made curtains, even embroidered towels, along with all the things a traveller will appreciate like top quality linen on the beds, big fluffy towels, towelling dressing gowns & a hair drier with some puff!
The cupboards in the kitchen are stocked with oils, stock cubes etc. if my chickens are laying, some freshly laid eggs from our little farm.
WIFI throughout, washing machine, tumble drier...TV, French & English channels, DVD player.
Mont St Michel an hour away, Bayeux, American Cemetery, Omaha, Sword, Gold, Juno the other invasion Beaches less than 40 minutes. Point du Hoc, Grandcamp Maisy just the other side of the bay can be seen from the village. Carentan, Ste Mere Eglise all a matter of minutes away...then there is the National Park that we are in the heart of, which is a conservation area of significant importance, with the marshes that flood in the winter and in the summer are grazing for the world class trotting horses bred here and the famous Normandy cows, walks, bike rides, coastline, dunes, cliffs, the beautiful Utah Beach is less than 4 minutes away which is not just a memorial but a gloriously sandy beach with Oyster beds, seals that pop up beside swimmers from time to time, amazing bird life as there is a 1,200 hectare bird sanctuary on the beach, dolphins even seen, safe to swim, clean and not over crowded.
Needing car hire? We can arrange it all for you - For example, If you are flying into France we can arrange for a chauffeur to meet you in the arrivals hall to take you to the station (or your hotel) and then on your arrival at Carentan station, a driver will be waiting for you as you alight the train to take you to your car hire.
As we don't have Sunday trading here and certainly nothing is trading when it's a big holiday check with us dates & day of arrival. The main car hire companies close for a 2-hour lunch still, even in the major cities, Sunday's are tricky too! We work with a local Renault dealership because they stay open the whole day so it's not a problem to catch the 10.08 train from Paris to arrive at 12.47 - someone will be waiting at the station at this end for you.
The summer months, Saturdays are incredibly busy on the motorways, we really encourage folk to arrive mid week & enjoy the weekend here as there is always something going on...the only day of the week we can't operate is a Sunday, after 16 years here, we give up & have adopted the French way of life!
We are local and live here full time, we are on hand, can organize car hire, war tours, restaurant bookings - on your arrival, if you want the information, we give you maps brochures etc. on the area, where to go what to see and very useful tips about timings etc. We fully appreciate that a lot of our short stay guests have limited time here, & once realized how much there is to see & do we can help maximize your experience plus we're also on hand help with any emergency.

About Tansy Forster
Working in London & living just outside London before taking the decision to leave our careers take the plunge to move here to Normandy in 2001, we had no plans to start vacation rentals...it just sort of happened! For me it is the answer to my dreams as I had over 15 years in the Hotel and Catering Industry, trained as a Hotel Manager...I always yearned for my own hotel, Mike never saw the attraction...so, this is as good as it gets! 15 years later we are thoroughly enjoying running our business,we are passionate about this hidden area of France and do offer more than just a vacation rental, we are more than happy to share with you where to go, what to see, how to get there, struck a deal with a local dealership to hire cars (as the car hire companies are so unaccommodating) - devised a WW2 tour which we will give you at no charge and we will even make reservations for you at restaurants. We now have 4 rental vacation properties, our beach house on Utah Beach which is 10 minutes away from where we are based, has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms with sea views and direct access onto the WW2 Invasion Beach Utah Beach Normandy, then in the village of Sainte Marie du Mont the 1st village liberated (Band of Brothers) right opposite the church we have a delightful 4* rated 2 bedroom stone town house... then, here where we live we have our 2 couples only units on our little farm where we have 2 nutty Jack Russell dogs, 8 cats, (all rescues), 2 Llamas, 3 Alpacas, 2 sheep, 2 goats, a kune kune pig, 60 or so chickens plus our old faithful goose now 11 years old... oh ,and a couple of Turkeys rescued from the rigors of Christmas!
Tansy Forster purchased this House in 2014
Why Tansy Forster chose Sainte-Marie-du-Mont
The house has the most wonderful feel, has a huge history, right opposite the beautiful Sainte Marie du Mont church, the 1st village liberated in France also echoes the events, next door to good restaurants, in the heart of the D Day Invasion Beaches really was not a difficult decision to buy it...but we are not all war here...the countryside, beaches, fishing ports etc are stunning...there is so much to do and see - La Manche an upside down version of Cornwall we have everything on offer here.
What makes this House unique
We have put everything we can possibly think of in all our houses, Mike has extensively travelled so we understand what is needed especially if you have just done a long haul flight! A chauffeur can meet you in the arrivals hall to take you to the station or your hotel & we can have a driver waiting for you as you alight the train to take you to the car hire location. Dressing gowns, big fluffy towels, hair driers, you name it we have tried to think of it! Plus we give you a complete overview of the area to include maps & a book but best of all we give you a FREE WW2 Tour for you to do at your own pace. With the Invasion Beaches, The Church, the history, close to the sea, the history of the property, the dimensions inside, the little garden at the back...it is delightful! Then only 40 minutes away you have Bayeux, Mont St Michel, St Vaast la Hougue a UNESCO site as well as the Invasion area to discover, the National Park, visit the cheese, sweet factories...and of course see cider, & calvados production...you cannot miss the apple tree here, in the spring the blossom, in the summer with the weight of the apples the trees are almost groaning! Haven't even mentioned the food!! ... This is just mentioning a few things to see and visit!

Everything it was photographed to be and more
Our four night stay in the Band of Brothers home was exceptional. We took a Jeep tour set up by Tansy for the real story of what took place in the area surrounding the village and it was so informational and helpful to understand what took place. The location was perfect and hearing the church bells from the church each morning was an added bonus. The local butcher and bakery were such a fun addition to an already memorable time. The attention to detail for what could be needed was so nice. We even had candles and matches for the storm that took out the power for a few hours which added to the story of how it must have been back in 1944 when the soldiers walked the street in front of the house. If we have the opportunity, we would love to come back. We were able to meet Tansy for just a few moments and it was a true pleasure to see the care she places in her guests and the genuine interest in making sure things were the best they could be. Thank you!
Thank you, a lovely gracious review, we are so 'chuffed' (English for wrapped!), that you enjoyed our efforts.
We try hard to make sure everything is there for every eventuality, you saying that about the candles, we'll double check the torches are still there that we left for such an event!
I do hope you are indeed able to come back & so glad Jean's Jeep tour filled in gaps.
Beautiful house, but town is deserted in March
We loved the house and Mike and Tansy were very responsive to our couple of requests.
However, we were really looking forward to visiting the pastry shop in the mornings as was mentioned in earlier reviews. Unfortunately, nothing was open on Monday and the only place open the rest of the week was Willy the butcher. The cathedrals we drove to visit in the recommended towns were all closed on the day we visited. They were in really neat and beautiful old villages, so the trip that day was not entirely in vain. Tansy's recommended D-Day tour suggestion guide was helpful.
While we did mostly avoid crowds in Mont St Michel (fantastic and a MUST visit) and other places, it was at times very cold and snowed a couple of days. It's a tossup whether we should have come later for better weather and businesses being open, or in March as we did and as a result avoided crowds.
In any case, sitting in front of a wood burning fire, watching Band of Brothers and drinking some good wine could not be beat!
There are never big crowds here - unfortunately, it is inclined to snow in winter, very rare for us with the sea on 3 sides of the peninsula, but our destination isn't weather orientated. It’s slightly busier that’s for sure in the warmer weather, our season is vaguely 1st April - 1st November - but during peak periods places are closed on their day of closure... even Monet’s Garden is closed on a Monday in summer ... it’s France! I do say check online, free WiFi in the house to help with this. 2 boulangeries in the village who do alternate their days off & Willy the Butcher/Epicerie, closes 1 day a week, cooks on the premises so there’s always ready meals from there...lasagne yesterday! We are Rural Normandy - the charm of it is how quiet it is all year round - it’s not city life that’s for sure!
Home from home
From a lovely welcoming from the owners we could see the property was living up to the promising photos. Very comfortable bed and loved having the bells awaken us at 7 knowing that we could then choose to jump up or have a lazy lie in.
We had taken our bikes and spent many days exploring the DDay beaches and surrounding area. luckily the hall way was large enough to accommodate the bikes as there is no rear access to the garden.
The kitchen was well equipped making it a pleasure to prepare meals and with an excellent butchers, bakers and moules shop so close we found one trip to the supermarket was sufficient for our two weeks.
And on the nights we didn't want to cook or travel two lovely eateries within a few yards.
We have visited the area before and always find new things to see and do but having such a fabulous base made it a pleasure to return to or spend that lazy rainy day in.
So very pleased it came up to expectations.
We really loved the photos of your paintings, especially as neither of us had appreciated the light in the kitchen from the roof lights.
The butcher is a gem, along with the 2 restaurants and 2 boulangeries within walking distance.
Sincerely hope when you come back to Normandy you will indeed book with us!
Thank you very much to Tansy for making our Normandy visit a wonderful experience, starting with the booking process and continuing with her advice for exploring the area. She was welcoming and helpful upon arrival. There were no issues during our stay but we knew she would be there if needed. The house is charming, comfortable and well equipped. The backyard was lovely for a glass of wine in the later day while recounting our day's events. The house is steeped in history, as well as the village. Two restaurants and an oyster shop are just next door and two bakeries and a butcher shop ensured we did not go hungry. The house is well positioned to explore northwestern Normandy. We highly recommend this house and would stay there again.Thank you Tansy.
So very pleased to hear you enjoyed your experience with your stay with us, thank you for sharing your recommendation, we appreciate it! Do indeed hope you return, you are very welcome!
Everything about this property is fantastic. Tansy and Mike are wonderful people. I dealt with Tansy while making the booking and e-mailed with her as we got closer to our stay to iron out details. She was very prompt and polite when getting back to me. They also allow dogs which appealed to us and there are plenty of places to walk your pup.
We stayed over the Christmas week and it was great to walk in and see a Christmas tree and all the decorations and a fire in the fireplace. Mike and Tansy met us at the property the day we got there to show us around. We were left maps and a sightseeing guide Tansy did. The house sits right between a fresh seafood place and a restaurant. The restaurant was closed for the season but that was fine with us. There is a butcher down the road (it takes about 1 minute to walk there) and we got something from him. Delicious! There is also a grocery store within a 10-15 minute drive. The kitchen has everything you need to cook with; pots, pans, utensils, large American refrigerator, etc. There is also wood out back for you to keep the fire going. We weren't really able to use the garden but it was beautiful to look at everyday.
Our visit was mainly to see the beaches of D-Day and St. Mont Michel. It was a 10 minute drive to Utah Beach and about a 30 minute drive to Omaha Beach and about an hour and 15 minutes to St. Mont Michel. (Just as an FYI, at St. Mont Michel, our credit card didn't work to pay for parking. However, if you use the pay stations behind the visitor center, there are two stations that take euro. The ones by the parking lots only take credit cards.)
I cannot say enough good things about this house, Mike and Tansy and the village. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to make their way out to the beaches or just for a good getaway. If we ever make our way out that way again, I would definitely book this property again, if only to sleep in that comfortable king sized bed!
Thank you again Mike and Tansy!
Thank you - we are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your Christmas in the house...the butcher across the street is really great, cooks on the premises and had a full menu available to take away for the Christmas & New Year - rest of the year he has a regular selection available plus is a medal winner for his sausages & pate!
Very special place
Truly a gem. The house is cozy, well-equipped with all modern conveniences. Immaculate. The king bed, a rarity in France, is extremely comfortable. Everything is done with thoughts of creating a lovely stay, including the bathrobes and oversized towels. Great shower. The kitchen is remarkably well equipped. The location of the house is perfect-in a very quiet village near Utah Beach and a short drive from everywhere. There is a charcuterie about 100 yards away where one can buy wonderful take-away. Tansy, the owner, was available whenever we needed her and went the extra mile with helping us plan our sight-seeing, dining, etc. We loved our stay, were sorry to go!
Thank you so much for your feedback - we are thrilled you enjoyed the house...you are right, a super kingsize bed in France is rare...we had a huge challenge getting it across to France...the manufacturers don't deliver to France & having it shipped by normal couriers was prohibitive in costs, finding someone with a van big enough with space certainly was the challenging part...so when someone notices it we feel very much 'it was worth it!'...
