Overview

Cashiers Area Cabin Rental Photos and Description

4 BR, 1 Loft, 4 BA, Sleeps 12

This hand-drawn, custom log cabin fulfills every family and mountaineer’s dream vacation.

Built above a rapid stream and overlooking a stunning ridge near Whiteside Mountain (home of the highest sheer cliffs in the Eastern U.S.), this three-level rustic home hosts four bedrooms (one king, two queens and two twins) with a loft (two twin SS), library (one twin SS) and one Queen SS in the Great Room; as well as four-baths (three claw-foot tubs with showers, master has separate tiled shower and guest has tiled stall shower). When was the last time you experienced a wall-mounted, pull-chain, toilet tank? You will at Shadow's Creek, all toilets are replicas of that by-gone era! This lodge is beautifully decorated throughout with countless vintage antiques and gorgeous bespoke furniture.

Just because you’re surrounded by nature, doesn’t mean you have to rough it. Enjoy all the modern conveniences of home, including washer/dryer, dishwasher, central air conditioning/heating, ceiling fans, land-line telephones with nationwide free calling, Dish satellite TV (186 channels), Wi-Fi internet, a DVD player, and VCR with a VHS video library (yes, people still have those…we did say the house had antiques).

Go beyond standard amenities with our loaded game room, complete with flat-screen smart TV, billiards, air hockey, ping-pong, Foosball, cards (poker, War or 21, anyone?) and chess/checkers! So throw some logs in either of the home’s two stack stone fireplaces and cherish time with friends and family or snuggle up to watch your favorite flick - whether it be a blast from the past, an all-time classic or the latest film you’ve been wishing to see.

In the mood for watching something not on a screen? Take a walk outside on the cabin’s large covered decks. Breathe in the fresh air and take in the luscious forestry surrounding our nearly 3-acres of property. At night, gaze out at one of the starriest skies that would leave even Vincent van Gogh star-struck. With the home itself elevated up 3,800 feet, there are no city lights obstructing your view. Find every constellation and maybe even catch a falling star.

For the iron chef in you, our fully-equipped gourmet kitchen meets even the most ardent culinary demands. Cook Southern favorites like grits, fried okra, pulled pork or chicken and waffles. Go a little more traditional with staples like skillet-seared steak, pizza, pancakes, eggs and bacon. If worldly cuisine is more your pace, the double-oven and Daco 6-burner gas cooktop island can take on even the most complex recipes: from paella to pierogis, from “fish n’ chips” to miso salmon, from gyros to falafel…or maybe keep it simple with wild blackberries you can pick right outside and toss into a fresh salad! Better yet, share a special moment with your kids, or become one yourself, and make some S’mores in the backyard fire-pit.

To build up that appetite, get back to nature and escape the hustle and bustle of the “real world”. Venture out into the great outdoors and rough it in the woods on your own camping expedition. Though be careful, “this is bear country”! Hike upstream to a nearby waterfall or visit the numerous other falls in the surrounding area, including Whiteside Falls; the highest falls in the eastern U.S.

Thrill-seekers, dare to cliff dive into a natural pool, or take a tamer glide down a natural water slide at “Sliding Rock” (call for directions to these secret local spots). Just want to take a cue from The Eagles and "take it easy"? Play a round of golf at the Historic High Hampton Inn or rent a pontoon boat out on Lake Glenville to do some fishing or inter-tubing.

If you long for a little bit of society, the quaint town of Cashiers is only 5.5 miles away! Sip a coffee at Buck’s Coffee Cafe (a personal favorite) or stock-up on supplies at the local Ingles grocery store.

If you’re interested in renting this beautiful dream home or have any questions what-so-ever, please do not hesitate to contact us! Kindly note, however, in order to maintain the cabin and keep it in the best condition for you and your fellow guests, we ask you to not bring your pets (no pets allowed) and to please no smoking (it is a house made completely of wood after all). Thank you for your consideration!

Should you decide stay at Shadow's Creek (named after our beloved Black Labrador Retriever, "Shadow"), kindly leave a review on VRBO/HomeAway to tell us about your stay! Thank you!

About Sharon Shortt

Our cabin was built in 2000 - from clearing the land, to watching our 765 foot deep fresh spring water well be drilled - it was a huge project. It took over two years to build!

Why Sharon Shortt chose Cashiers Area

Living in Florida - lakes were not appealing to us - a rapid creek is exactly what we wanted - and got with this propety!

What makes this cabin unique

This is an "Authentic" LOG CABIN

"Hearing" the beautiful rapid creek, is so soothing. Walk into the cabin and leave the hectic pace of life outside the front door...

You can hear the stream/waterfall from the porch!

This property has it all. My wife, two children and I were very comfortable. It is located very conveniently to Cashiers and surrounding areas. We sat on the porch with a cup of coffee and listened to the water! We went hiking one day and kayaking another without having to travel very far. Once we got back from our activities we could unwind in the game room. Entertainment options were limitless. Pool, ping pong, air hockey, foosball to mention a few. The kitchen was well equipped. The bedrooms were very comfortable. The owner was very easy to work with. They even had firewood delivered for us. The pictures do not do it justice! You can't go wrong staying here.

Perfect Family Mountain House

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have 4 boys and stayed at Shadow's Creek with 3 cousins and their Mom. We booked online and had no idea how AWESOME this house was going to be until we got there! Couldn't ask for anything more - gorgeous location, privacy, river running through backyard, incredible play room with pool table, ping pong, board game table, air hockey, football, etc.! On top of that the kitchen was the most well equipped I've ever stayed in - nothing they didn't have! Log cabin atmosphere and decor and plenty of room with huge porches in back and front and in both 2nd and 3rd stories. Firepit in back. Seriously we felt like we found a hidden gem! Explore right out the front or back door. Short drives to hikes and sliding rocks and town. Boys had a blast, adults had a blast. We can't wait to go back!

Disappointed

  • 3 of 5

No toilet paper or towels. Many lightbulbs were out. NOT what I would call luxury. Very dated and a bit creepy. We didn't even spend two of the three nights there.

Owner's Response: I had intended to inquire with HomeAway if there was an avenue in which this guest could be prevented from ever staying at a HomeAway property again. I haven’t had the time, since I have been trying to clean up their mess. In all of the years that I have hosted with HomeAway and VRBO, I have NEVER had a guest mistreat our home in the manner that they did. It is very obvious, that the guest did NOT read anything prior to arriving. It was made clear that paper goods and towels are not supplied. It is also clear that all beds are to be stripped and all dishes cleaned. Not one bed was stripped and their dirty dishes were everywhere. The lower level/game room of the house looked like the “day after” a frat house party! Empty bottles of champagne, empty miniature alcohol bottles and every champagne glass we own was left dirty, along with partial bags of snacks, all strewn across the game room. Our caretaker could not even get the home clean before we, personally, arrived – so I was able to see the mistreatment first hand. The caretaker could not find the top sheet to the master bedroom bed – it was folded up in a sofa bed, along with three other partial sets of sheets. Our caretaker was overwhelmed; she said that she has never seen a guest leave a home in this state. Again, I was the “guest” who arrived immediately after this guest. Some light bulbs were out – that could have happened after a power surge. The Cabin is not "dated" - obviously she did not look at the photos before she rented. It is a "Log Cabin" - filled with charm, antiques and hand-made furniture - "timeless"! We have countless entries in our Guest Book exclaiming how "special" and "unqiue" our cabin is. Three levels, 4,300 square feet of hand-hewn logs, two stacked stone fire places and a gourmet kitchen - yes, it is "Luxury" - unfortunately, it's beauty and charm was lost on this guest.

Large and well supplied but needs TLC

  • 2 of 5

We stayed in this cabin for a week with another family. The kitchen was great for cooking - large, with an incredible amount of dishes, cutlery, cups, pots, pans, bowls, small appliances, etc. The house was large so there were plenty of spaces for everyone to spread out and enjoy themselves, however, the house and especially the grounds seemed run down. The mattresses on every bed were HORRIBLE and the sheets were in need of replacement. TOWELS are NOT supplied. Lighting was poor throughout the house, so much so that we could not find a suitable place to do a 500-piece puzzle.

The vegetation & trees were so overgrown that you could not see the stream on the property or really any of the back yard and there were weeds and tall grass in front of the house. The multiple porches and decks did not look like they had been swept for months. The interior of the house was surface clean but dust was lurking on the bric-a-brac which was EVERWHERE. The ping pong table was broken but usable. There are only two TVs, one in the Master bedroom and one in the bottom floor rec room. It took about hour to get the TV downstairs to work so we ended up leaving it on the entire week so we wouldn't have to fight with it every day. The headboard of the bed in the master bedroom was fashioned from two large loops of dried kudzu which is impossible to dust, and which left a big gap between the mattress and the wall so your pillows would fall through. We ended up draping a sheet over it. One of the French doors to the deck off the master bedroom was missing a blind so every night we covered it with a blanket. Speaking of blankets, there were a fair amount in the house but we had to launder them as they smelled like they hadn't been washed in a really long time.

We built a fire in the great room and smoke was leaking through the chimney into the house. The wood floors were really worn and had not been refinished anytime in recent memory. The house is on a narrow twisty-turny one-lane gravel road, so you have to back up if a car comes from the other direction.

In closing, if the owner invests some time and money into maintenance, I would recommend the property.

Owner's Response: In response to this one and only negative review, I must first say that we immediately addressed all the issues with our weekly caretaker. Our cabin has been occupied for most of the summer and so we have been unable to personally visit the residence. However, last I was there, the sheets were all in good form; as well as the mattresses, which were all clean and in good repair. The caretaker assured me that the status of such remains the same. While the mattresses are not "tempurpedics", mind you, we have not had a single complaint in the past. The bed in the Master Bedroom was hand-made by local artists, the same artists who crafted the beautiful dining room table. Again, we have never had any complaints in the past. Quite the contrary, we have received nothing but complements. We "intentionally" allow the natural vegetation to grow around the cabin - we are "in the mountains" and so try to keep it as rustic as possible. However, our caretaker cuts a deep trim a path to the creek, which he did again at the end of August. At the same time, he pressured cleaned the porches. We do provide for some limited modern conveniences including WiFi, satellite TV and two functioning televisions (with the game room TV being a flat screen, only one year old). As for lighting, this cabin is advertised and presented as a rustic cabin - which includes antique lighting that is subtle. This lighting; however, is complemented during the day with the natural sunlight brought in through the large and varied windows throughout the cabin. There is also high hat lighting throughout the game room. The ping pong table is not in perfect condition, but it works. I do NOT understand why the fireplace was lit in the middle of the summer. It smoked because the flue was shut. It may explain the huge electric bill for the month of August! It is not a very environmentally-friendly practice to waste air conditioning by lighting a fireplace in the summer. There is an outdoor fire pit for roasting marshmallows in the summer. In closing, this is a log cabin in the "mountains" - being on a "twisty-turning one lane gravel road" is all part of its rustic allure and what many renters enjoy it! I thank the reviewer for complimenting our well-supplied kitchen and spacious cabin and for the implication that she would recommend the property after the areas of concern were addressed. I am sorry the renter was unable to enjoy the charm that comes with being one with nature.

Fabulous Home

  • 5 of 5

What an absolute delight to stay in this home for 4 nights. There was plenty of elbow room for all of us.

The house is lovely and the setting is lovely. I would most definitely recommend this house for a vacation. The owner was so easy to work with!!!! We cooked in the kitchen and cooked on the grill. Meals were easy to prepare in this well equipped kitchen.
