Situated on the legendary Niobe Falls, The Waterfall House is a sunny and bright, charming Victorian house at the end of a quiet country road. Hiking is literally "out the door." Located in the tiny hamlet of Palenville, The Waterfall House was home to Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle," and s centrally located between Woodstock, Saugerties, Catskill and Hunter.
Furnished with country antiques and original art, the Waterfall House has two bedrooms, two full spacious baths plus a den with twin bed "sleeper chairs." The full size sofa bed in the living room affords a glorious waterfall view. A separate dining room comfortably seats six.
The fully equipped cook’s kitchen features granite counters and coffee nook with delightful river views. French doors in the living room and den open to a romantic wrap-around porch right over the river with majestic mountain and waterfall views, the inspiration for the famed Hudson River School of Painters.
Iconic Woodstock, a 10 mile drive, is a haven for shops, galleries and restaurants. Nearby Hunter Mountain (10 miles) provides a wide range of winter and summer sports. Hunter is the first of the three major ski resorts, which also include Windham and Belleayre. The 'Catskill Mountain Foundation' offers classes in the arts and many craft and culinary events. Nature lovers will appreciate the access to hiking and fishing.
In summer and fall, browse the outdoor flea market. A wide variety of shops, galleries and first-rate restaurants are all within strolling distance. Enjoy a concert at the historic Maverick or live theater at the Woodstock Playhouse. The 'Woodstock Film Festival, held each autumn, is a movie lover's delight.
The charming Village of Saugerties, (“....one of the ten coolest small towns in America...” Budget Traveler Magazine), an easy 8 mile drive, provides easy access to the Hudson River for boating and sailing and is home to H.I.T.S., a major equestrian center. Exciting new shops and restaurants and many festivals and events such as the Garlic Festival each September and the 'Jazz Festival' make Saugerties a destination in its own right. A colorful Farmer’s Market is open in season.
Evenings are perfect for strolling to the 'Fernwood Restaurant' for cocktails and dinner.

When "ThingBig!" creator Bob Malkin met Emmy-award winning film editor and novelist Barbara Pokras, neither dreamed they'd be the owners of The Waterfall House! Bob is a "Brooklyn boy," and Babs grew up in Connecticut but spent most of her life in Los Angeles.
Barbara Pokras and Robert Malkin purchased this house in 2006
We simply couldn't say, "no," when we found the Waterfall House. The next question, what to do with it? We already had a house nearby with its own, smaller waterfall. Our solution? To create an extraordinary vacation rental home to share with the world. Our guests come from far and wide, and the response has been beyond our wildest dreams!
The Waterfall House is the perfect retreat from the hectic pace of life. Relaxation is a given, as are hiking, swimming, skiing, fishing, shopping, gallery hopping and fine dining.
Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your lovely home.
The house is clean and comfortable and decorated so beautifully. There are so many great books to read and movies to watch. And then, of course, there is the main attraction, which is the falls. We had so much fun hopping from rock to rock, or just sitting and meditating. Our dog Conrad is a little timid around water, so we didn't know what kind of reaction he would have. But he loved it! By the last day, he was hopping on the rocks too. (Maybe next time, he'll dare to go into the river!)
We are already talking about renting again in May!
Thank you again and again!
The Waterfall House is perfect - the waterfall is great, changes daily, and so relaxing to watch. All your needs are anticipated and addressed, the accomodations are top notch. Very comfortable. We had a great girls' getaway, enjoying good food, wine and conversation.Took a trip to Woodstock and enjoyed the shops and local flavor. Just a great house, great time.
We had a wonderful autumn stay at the Waterfall House. Margie helped us find it in the dark and was attentive to our every need. The sound of the waterfall cascading can be heard from every room and is so calming. Loved sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and reading or just watching the falls. Our dogs were so happy running free in the fenced in yard! The beds were very comfortable and the décor charming. We enjoyed the Woodstock-New Paltz Arts and Crafts Fair and also Hooley on the Hudson in Kingston. We made several trips to charming Tannersville and especially enjoyed the wonderful donuts at Twin Peaks (try the salted caramel). We had planned to do a lot more exploring, but it was just too hard to leave the Waterfall House!
We first stayed at the Waterfall House two years ago. We returned this fall 2016 and was not disappointed.. It was as wonderful as we remembered. The warm welcome (beautiful fall day, windows open, breeze blowing through the house and friendly greeting from Margie), the beautiful grounds and falls, the lovely fun house, the quiet, semi-private space all made the second visit to this charming place perfect.
My wife and I stayed here in July 2016 and never saw fit to leave the premises. The house and porch are beautifully built and decorated, extremely comfortable and have spectacular views. The sound of the waterfalls below is a soothing constant in the background. The bedrooms are warm., the bathrooms clean, and the country kitchen large and homey. The cable TV and internet worked very well. Hanging out in the rocks below and swimming in the water hole was wonderful. We will be back.
What a great getaway from NYC...only a few hours drive. Palenville is centrally located, and within 30 minutes of so many places to explore...Hunter Mountain, Saugerties, Woodstock, Hudson, Rhinebeck...we loved Fernwood, the family-run restaurant, just steps from our front door. The owners were very attentive hosts and made our stay most comfortable. Kept our dogs on-leash, most of the time, and walked each individually after dark, given how dark it was and knowing that animals were lurking...didn't see them, but did smell skunk. If you do go, you'll probably say that the pictures don't do it justice...
My wife recently completed a four week stay at this property and we genuinely enjoyed ourselves. The house is as described in the ad but the sound of the water cascading down the falls and adjacent to the porch are even better than advertised! Bob and Barbara are gracious hosts. They managed to make themselves available as we needed without hovering. We benefited from their suggestions about how to spend our time, answwering questions we had not thought about before arriving. We had a few suggestions such as sharpening the knives and they took care of them within a few hours. Remarkably helpful.
Nature is abundant, so bring your camera. Loads of nearby hiking trails. We provide maps. Our bikes are yours to use.
