We had a great time decorating the house to feel like home, and there are lots of fun touches, from our wall of kitsch mountain landscapes to the old waltzer panels we've mounted on the wall in the garden; plenty of the antique/vintage pieces were gleaned from Rye's many second-hand shops.

Changeover day is generally Friday, but is flexible outside of high season. Minimum stay: 2 nights.

Pets are not allowed.

Bee Cottage is a non-smoking property.

About Emily Brooks

I'm a freelance interiors journalist, and I also write a blog about stylish holiday lets, Emily Escaped, an antidote to the idea that holiday rentals need to be bland and beige. In the end I decided to dive in and create the kind of holiday home that I would like to stay in as a guest – luxurious, stylish, but fun.

We had been coming to Rye as visitors for a while before we bought here, and fell in love with its beautiful buildings and amazing history - but also the fact that's it's a thriving town, not preserved in aspic.

An ideal day would see us up for breakfast at The Ship Inn, before walking it off down over the dunes to Camber Sands. Back in Rye for the afternoon, we'd dig out some vintage bargains in the antique shops and rummage for some vinyl at Grammar School Records, then have a quick drink in the atmospheric back bar at the ancient Mermaid. Dinner would be in acclaimed local eatery the Landgate Bistro, finishing the night with some live music at the Queen's Head over the road.

Emily Brooks purchased this house in 2013

Why Emily Brooks chose East Sussex

Bee Cottage stole our hearts because it's a modest little house that also seems to have loads of room for everyone! The easy walk into Rye, good parking (a rarity in the town) and closeness to the station were all practical factors, too.

What makes this house unique

It's a lovely period property, but we've given it lots of special touches and modern comforts, blending old and new in a lively way.

Great property in great location. With everything you need for a wonderful stay.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this property for a week with our 14 month old daughter and my parents. It was the perfect Base for a lovely family holiday. Our daughter loved the toys and books that were provided this added with all the great facilities really made it home away from home. Great location for an easy walk into rye. We also had lovely days out in battle, Hastings, camber sands and the rare breeds farm all within easy reach.

Lovely house

  • 5 of 5

Great to stay in a house rather than a hotel while working away. Easy quick walk into Rye for all the restaurants and pubs. Only slight downside was the car park which has the most overly complicated ticket system I've ever encountered (though that is nothing to do with the owner). Would definitely book again

Very homely stay

  • 4 of 5

We were 5 people staying for a long week-end. The house is very comfortable and feels like home and not a holiday stay. The lounge and dining room are very spacious and the facilities are very good though we have not used the kitchen. The bedrooms were also spacious and easily accommodate 6 people.

The only comment is that one couple staying did not have good night sleep due to the bed not being too comfortable. But they would come back any time as the rest was perfect.

We were on 4 motorbikes and parked on the street 100 meters from the house with no problems, and within 5 minutes walk through the car park we were in Rye center.

Will definitely re-book this cottage when we go to Rye again.

  • 4 of 5

Traumhaft

  • 5 of 5

The property sits on the Kent & East Sussex borders, in the heart of '1066 Country', near the sea and the countryside.

Rye itself is a gem of a place – a medieval citadel that is gorgeously picturesque, yet full of life, bursting with ancient buildings that are home to wonderful shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants.

The town’s seafaring history encompasses everything from 18th-century smugglers to Captain Pugwash, and the wider area has miles of beaches, sun-baked vineyards, historic houses and world-famous gardens.

Our favourite places include Camber Sands, a huge, glorious stretch of beach backed by sand dunes; Great Dixter and Sissinghurst, both wonderful gardens; Hastings, great for antiques shopping in the pretty Old Town, the Jerwood Gallery and family-friendly activities like Smuggler's Adventure; and the Kent & East Sussex Railway, a light railway that takes in many local attractions such as fairytale Bodiam Castle.
