What makes this chalet unique

To be so close to nature - plants, birds and bees - and the view over the ocean, makes this a very nice place to be. The scent from many different trees, vines and flowers really tantalizes your senses and you really feel the special place the Chalet are placed on.You will get to see natures wonders with your own eyes up close and personal. Perfectly Appointed, Off the Beaten Path

  • 5 of 5

Steve and Jette are wonderful hosts of this perfectly appointed home outside Paia. They have thought of everything you may need to make your stay comfortable. Here are a few highlights of the house:

-The beds are very comfortable

-The layout of the house is open and spacious

-The house is well appointed but not cluttered

-The hot tub is a dream - no chlorine!

-The surrounding gardens are verdant and well tended

I can't recommend this house enough if you want to see a more authentic side of Maui away from the resorts and condos. My only qualification would be for families with small children or if you are a weaker swimmer - we found the beaches on the north shore less hospitable than the more mellow beaches in south or west Maui, so be prepared to drive a bit for more appropriate beaches. That said, we were very happy to return to this house in the evenings after a day of exploring, hiking, or in the water. My family looks forward to returning to this house for years to come.

Owner's Response: So nice to have your lovely family here.! We love to see enthusiasm, curiosity, interest and respect! you give us hope for the future! Thank you for leaving The Chalet so nice! The Baldwin Beach Park Cove, Baby Beach and the tidepools at Ho'okipa are all very nice for kids, when the surf are down - most summer!.

Secluded, but a bit disappointing

  • 3 of 5

I booked this property based on the website description, reviews and the fact that I wanted a location with privacy, as opposed to a resort hotel. The highlights were certainly how welcoming and accommodating Jette and Steve are as hosts, as well as the privacy and seclusion of the location.

There were also some lowlights - I must say that when I arrived, I was quite surprised that the house had a pervasive musty/stale smell that was a bit unpleasant and persisted. The other issue for me was that as a solo female traveler, I found that I did not feel entirely safe in the property location , given that it is somewhat isolated in the jungle and some of the neighboring properties are a bit sketchy.

As others have observed, it is definitely off the beaten path and quite a unique setting! The jungle is vibrant and teeming with a wide variety of tropical plants and birds. It's a bit of drive to the beaches, but Steve and Jette provided valuable advice on beaches, restaurants in Paia and parking. I would recommend it as retreat for couples or families, but it's not quite what I was expecting.

Owner's Response: There had been an unusual amount of rain, over the whole Island. The previous guest had been living there almost 2 months and he liked to keep the windows closed (he is from a cold climate, where that’s common.) The 'musty' odor was temporary, as the sun came out, with the windows open and warm trade winds blowing, it usually smells good. In 14 years, we never heard of about a musty smell. My wife is an avid professional and highly detailed cleaner who spent many hours prior to this guests arrival to ensure it was as clean as possible. It is a shame and it's judgmental to claim "sketchy" neighbors, as the neighbors a block before the Chalet are our Hawaiian neighbor family who don't have much money and live on their ancestral property. We have known them for 17 years. Just after the Chalet there are 3 multimillion dollar estates. Our neighborhood is diverse and safe.

The perfect place in paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We could not have been happier with our choice to stay at this chalet for our honeymoon! The backyard view and hot tub are amazing, the amenities are comfortable and Steve and Jette are the perfect hosts. They went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed throughout our stay. We highly recommend staying here and will definitely return on our next trip to Maui!

Off-The-Grid

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Kihei our first couple of days on the island then switched over to Maui Chalet the last 4 days. It was incredible and a nice change from the city. Very secluded and the hosts - Steve and Jette were extremely accommodating. We had everything we needed and more. Cell phone use was very limited to certain areas of the house but that was also a good thing. More time to relax.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed our little slice of Paradise! Thank you for chosing us! The Off-the-grid is not quite the right title, I think, as the electricity is from the grid, but buried underground! but you are right about the watersupply - luckily - we feel - catching the rain, filtrating it by reverse osmosis, makes for wonderful tasty clean water and a treat to soak in the hot tub. The reception for cell phones really depend on the provider - most are fine, but works best on the deck as the thick wood perhaps block transmission? we do offer the landline there though, as longdistance calls are very cheap.

Beautiful location, great amenities, even with not so favorable weather

  • 5 of 5

I've been meaning to write a review for this place for months. After staying in Kaanapali doing "the tourist thing", Our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children) stayed here last June for a couple of days while we went on day excursions all over the North and East shores of the island and driving the amazing Hana Highway. The house and location was ideal as it was towards the beginning of Hana Highway, so we were somewhat close to Paia for some great restaurants and for a grocery store, but far enough away from it all that we felt like we were in paradise. We made great use out of the rain water hot tub and the beautiful grounds. The weather wasn't perfect, but with the beauty of the location and awesome view, it didn't matter. The weather also helped with seeing the multiple waterfalls along the highway. Not a lot of people around when it starts to rain just a little bit (but if you know Hawaii, it generally does stop after a little bit). This location is A simply amazing place in paradise that Steve and Jette have beautifully maintained. They were the perfect owners in making sure we had everything we needed (even picking some fruit off of their own trees for us upon our arrival) and giving us all the details of this cool "Maui Chalet". I would not hesitate in recommending this place to all my family and friends and we would LOVE to stay here again when we have more time to get away from our Oahu home! Mahalo for letting us stay at your beautiful home! We absolutely LOVED it and our oldest daughter asks to go back all the time.
