Aloha! Welcome to Hale Ma'kai (house beside the sea), my tropical-themed vacation home at Kihei Akahi. My smoke-free one-bedroom Maui condo, located in sunny Kihei, is the perfect place to spend your Maui vacation. Hale Ma'kai is a spacious (696 SF), ground-floor condo with lanai opening out onto a large lawn. It has been decorated with tropical decor to provide you with a feeling of a south seas home away from home. The kitchen and bathroom have been updated with new cabinets, appliances and finishes. The living room has had a new sofa and carpeting several times. In 2015 new energy efficient windows were installed, and the AC replaced with a quiet, energy efficient unit. In the fall of 2017, a new, quiet, refrigerator was installed. The bedroom has been completely renovated with new carpeting, tropical furniture imported from the mainland and a new king mattress. It has a Tommy Bahama quilt, staying consistent with the tropical theme. My pictures reflect the style of the condo.
Inside is your own washer and dryer, ceiling fans, a quiet window AC, Free WiFi and high speed cable internet, free use of a Dell laptop and printer (see description) free long distance phone service to the US and Canada, and a fully-equipped kitchen. In addition, the condo has a flat panel TV and an eclectic library of books, VCR tapes, and DVDs -- several featuring Hawaiian history and/or culture.
I now live about two miles from the condo and can personally perform regular deep cleaning and maintenance. I am also available to handle any problem right away. I want my guests to have the best vacation experience possible.
The Kihei Akahi complex boasts lovely tropical landscaped grounds with Plumeria trees, Hibiscus and other mature, lush Hawaiian plants. We have even created a botanical garden walk on the grounds; maps are available at the front desk.
Across the street is sandy Kamaole II Beach Park with showers and restrooms. During the day until 5:00 PM, the beach park has life guards. At Kam II, as it is called, you will be able to catch the rays of the sun (wear sunscreen!) or swim and snorkel -- and be likely to see a green sea turtle or two. In the evenings you will be able to sit on the west-facing lanai and view the sunsets while having a glass of wine or having dinner.
My condo can be accessed via wheelchair. However, it is not true ADA compliant and, therefore, not set up for many needs of handicapped guests. Please discuss your needs with me before booking.
Although true ADA compliant service animals are allowed in the Kihei Akahi complex, PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN MY CONDO as many of my guests and I have pet allergies and the cost and time required to clean and remove allergens is prohibitive.
My Condo is smoke-free. SMOKING IS NOT ALLOWED ANYWHERE IN MY CONDO OR ON THE LANAI! Kihei Akahi has a policy of no smoking in the walkways, the lanais, or within 50 feet of any buildings.
The State of Hawaii requires that all vacation rentals be registered with the state to pay both transient accommodations and excise taxes on rentals. My Hawaiian tax ID# is: T-158-023-6800

Aloha! I have been coming to Maui since 1982 when I finally fulfilled my dream of visiting Hawaii. Maui really is a wonderful, special place and I feel fortunate to own my little piece of paradise and be able to share it with my guests. During my second visit to Hawaii a year later, I finally had the courage to try snorkeling and fell in love with the beautiful warm ocean and its inhabitants. Twenty years later (2003) I took it to the next level and became a scuba diver! Once I became a diver, I wanted to give something back and now I still volunteer occasionally when I am in Maui -- counting fish and tracking the health of the reefs. There is even a picture of me in scuba gear on the cover of "Preserving Paradise: Opportunities in Volunteering for Hawaii's Environment," by Kirsten Whatley -- available from Amazon. This book is recommended for anyone who has an interest in enriching their experience of this magical place. I very much enjoy sharing my condo and encourage my guests to ask questions about Maui and their upcoming vacations. Many come back year after year and have become part of what I call "my Maui family."

Why Annette chose Kihei
The first time I stayed at the Kihei Akahi complex was in 1987. Previously, I had always stayed in the Kaanapali area in one of the hotels. My friends with whom I was traveling and I really liked the relaxed pace of Kihei and the spaciousness of one bedroom condos. We liked being able to just walk across the street to a great beach for swimming and snorkeling. Subsequently all of my return visits have been to this part of the island. When I finally decided to buy my own condo, I checked out many other properties as well but found that, for me, Kihei Akahi offered the best value. Kihei Akahi, unlike many complexes on the island, is built with very solid construction which means that sound does not normally travel between walls; units are very quiet. This is a very important feature when people are living next to each other. I liked the spaciousness of the units and having immediate access to the ocean. Complexes in North Kihei, are near beaches that are beautiful but mostly shallow and rocky and not good for snorkeling or swimming. I also liked that I could walk to shops and restaurants -- a feature that I thought would appeal to my guests. And, of course, the grounds of the Kihei Akahi complex are kept up beautifully which makes it nice for me and my guests to visit.
What makes this Condo unique
I love that my condo sits at the back of the property facing west toward the sunsets and away from the noise of South Kihei Rd. It is a minute or two further to the beach than some of the units but it is very quiet and peaceful. Being on the ground floor, I can simply walk out my lanai door and I am 20 seconds to the pool and BBQs or am on the beach in about three-five minutes. I am walking distance (about 5-20 minutes) to enough restaurants and stores that I don't have to use my car unless I need to buy a lot of groceries or something special. Birds and plants on the property give me a great sense of peace and happiness. I hope you experience the same when you visit Maui.

Great condo at a incredible location.
My wife and I have stayed at the Kihei Akahi for the last six years, and this is by far one of our most favourite condos we have stayed at. So much so that we have already booked our stay here for next year already. Typically we always bring a few kitchen items we know the condos don't carry. Everything we brought, Annette had already provided. This is one of the best stocked kitchens we have ever had. Although I bring my own snorkel equipment, I was very impressed with the beach/ocean equipment that this condo provided. Anything you wanted to do, whether swimming, snorkelling, boogie boarding or just plain chilling on the beach was provided. The furnishings in the condo were very comfortable (great king size bed) and the decorating conveyed the Maui experience. This is also the first condo we have stayed at that provided the tenants with a laptop and printer. The condo was very clean and modern. My wife and I enjoy the ground floor condos as it provides us easy access to the pool and

Great location, only a short walk from Kameole Beach. The condo had everything that we needed!
We spent one week in Annette’s condo, and wish we had planned for a longer trip. The condo is in a great spot in Kihei, Maui. This was our first time to the island, and we were happy to be in this location across from a gorgeous, safe, family friendly beach and with lots of great food and activity options nearby. Annette was a great host, and the condo was stocked with everything we could have possibly needed. Would definitely recommend! We were a little disenchanted by the ground floor level at first, but it ended up being very convenient with the back-and-forth to the beach :-)
Perfect condo at a perfect location.
This is one of the best condos we have stayed at. The kitchen was stocked with everything a person needed. It had everything required for enjoying oneself at the beach including all kinds of snorkel equipment. Located in a great location at Kihei across from the Kama'ole 2 beach and near some great restaurants. Highly recommend this condo and condo owner.

Fantastic Week in Maui - Can't Beat the Price, Location and Hospitality
We loved our time in Kihei and our stay at Annette's condo. The last time we came to Maui we stayed in Kapalua - and we were shocked how much more at home we felt in Kihei. Very walkable. We'd never stay anywhere else again. Annette's condo was exactly as advertised - and is seriously a 1 min walk to the best beach, maybe on Maui. The bed was very comfortable, the shower had good water pressure, and the kitchen had everything you'd need. Looking forward to staying here again next year!

Truly a home away from home
Annette's Maui home was exactly as she described it. Staying in her condo really made our vacation so much more enjoyable. It is in a very desired location with easy access to all amenities. The condo has everything needed and then some. We definitely would recommend this home away from home. Annette was very easy to talk to and very informative as far as what to do and places to see when on Maui. We won't hesitate to contact Annette for our next visit.
Nice place close to the beach
We enjoyed our stay. The place was clean, there were various things for the beach i.e. chairs, cooler, water toys. The owner was delightful to deal with. We would stay there again!
Maui Ocean Center Aquarium -- a must see. Centrally located to all of Maui activities. The Maui Bus runs on South Kihei Rd on which the Kihei Akahi complex is located. Those guests who prefer not to rent an automobile will find that the bus provides good access to much of the island.

All adults are required to sign a rental agreement prepared by owner. Rates are based on two adults and one child Additional adults or children 2-16 are $10 p/nt. add'l fee (plus taxes). Contact owner to remove first child extra fee assigned by VRBO. Infants up to 2 years of age will NOT be charged an extra person fee. Please contact owner for rates and availability outside of the dates given in the above schedules. Standard rates do not apply to holiday or winter seasons. NEWS FLASH! On September 5, 2017 the governor of Hawaii signed into law a 1% increase in hotel/transient accommodation taxes due to start January 1, 2018. The general excise tax remains the same. Taxes have been updated to reflect the new rate but guests who book for remaining 2017 dates in my schedule will have their quotes adjusted by me after the VRBO/HomeAway quote. DISCOUNTS Discounts are available for stays of 15 nights or longer. Please inquire. Rates are based on credit card payments through VRBO/HomeAway. Payments through Money Order, Personal Check, or e-check receive 3% discount. Please discuss with owner so that quote can be adjusted to reflect the discount. Stays of less than minimum nights may be accepted if filling a gap in the reservation schedule or within two weeks of arrival. Inquire. Online Payments. Guests responsible for any charge back fees assessed if errors made by guests while inputting information during payment process, if there are non-sufficient funds, or if there is credit card refusal. 100% Refund for cancellations made 60 days before arrival EXCEPT. Cancellations after 60 days will receive refunds if owner is able to rebook the days of the reservation -- minus any discounts used to acquire the replacement booking. Cleaning Fee, Guest Services Fee, and Applicable Taxes will be refunded. VRBO has sole discretion with regard to refunding of its user fee.
