Peaceful, rural location In the Ariege, Close To All Major Attractions

About the property

Baragne is a Lovely, Bright, Newly Decorated, Open-Plan, 3 Bedroom House

Baragne is a lovely, bright, newly decorated, open-plan, 3 bedroom house in a small hamlet (also known as Baragne), 10 minutes from Foix, The house is fully equipped including dishwasher, oven, microwave, washing machine and dryer, everything to make your stay as relaxing and easy as possible. Our house is located in the Ariege foothills of the Pyrenees, a region of outstanding natural beauty and tranquility. Famed for its charm, its stunning landscapes, medieval architecture and Cathar Castles together with its colourful markets, quaint villages, pre-historic cave paintings and breath-taking panoramic views, this area is just waiting to be explored whether by car, on foot, horseback or kayaking down the fast flowing rivers.

With its excellent access to all the major attractions of Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi, Toulouse, Mirepoix, Andorra and the Mediterranean beaches, basing yourself here will enable you to enjoy all that this spectacular area of France has to offer.

The house itself is built over 2 levels with large windows all around giving it a very light and airy feeling. The layout is perfect for both relaxing and entertaining, indoors and out as we have a very large balcony/terrace with beautiful views all around. Please note that we do have a TV for watching DVDs, but it is not currently connected to watch programmes. We have recently had a new Satellite dish installed for Internet/Wifi. . There is ample parking for multiple cars.

Baragne is also an ideal location for a winter holiday with the 2 closest 'Alpine Skiing' resorts (Ax les 3 domaines and Mont d'Olmes) only about an hour away and the 2 cross country skiing reorts of Plateau de Beille and Chioula are about 1 hour and a half. Plateau de Beille has excellent facilities for children with tobogganing, and dog sledding. We have a very large wood burning fire which keeps the house wonderfully warm, as well as radiators in all the bedrooms and plenty of warm duvets! There is a wealth of information about the ski resorts if you Google 'Ariege Skiing', or feel free to ask us any questions.

About Brian and Georgette Harries

We are Brian and Georgette Harries, a British couple who have lived in many countries all over the world thanks to a career managing luxury hotel properties. We live in England with our teenage son and spend our time between there and France - the Ariege region is perfect for active teenagers; our son loves rock climbing and kayaking and we love to cook and entertain. We love the markets and we love walking and hiking and discovering hidden gems whether they be panoramic views, restaurants in perfect settings or local seasonal produce.. but recent commitments have us spending more time in England, so we have decided to share our home away from home and look forward to introducing others to the delights of Baragne and the Ariege region.

Brian and Georgette Harries purchased this house in 2009

Why Brian and Georgette Harries chose Ariege

We have always loved France, and the French way of life and spent about 10 years searching for 'that special place'. Having explored everywhere from Provence to Aude, we eventually discovered the Ariege region and fell in love with the whole area. Mountains, castles, lakes, rivers and waterfalls - it has everything we were looking for and when we found 'Baragne' - one look and the decision was made! Baragne has the total 'wow' factor we were looking for! Driving up through the hamlet does not prepare you for what you about to find... On entering the house all is revealed - the tranquillity and privacy are second to none, and yes we are biased but we absolutely love it! We bought the house 5 years ago and have spent a large part of our time there, bringing it up to our high standards.

What makes this house unique

We call 'Baragne' our sanctuary and it really does feel like that to us. We have wonderful access to all the major routes if we want to get out and about exploring all the delights of the area, or if we just want to kick back and relax - 'Baragne' is such a stress-free environment that within minutes of being there, we feel ourselves unwinding. Depending on the time of year, the changing seasons all have something wonderful to offer, whether it is the brilliant winter snow, the fabulous Spring flowers and waterfalls, or the deer, foxes and wild boar in our fields and woods in the Summer and Autumn. Our large deck overlooking the fields with the stream running alongside, is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunshine, for breakfast, lunch and for a perfect evening bbq...

Immaculate house close to Foix with awesome views.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay here. We came in November and there is still plenty to do. You are a 10 minute drive to Foix so it is close to amenities but you are in the country and so you take advantage of a real sense of peace, calm and tranquility. Just the odd tinkle of the bell of a mountain goat. The terrace is the real highlight here - a beautiful place to sit and relax. The open plan kitchen and living area is also great and spacious. Very well equipped with every piece of kit you could possibly need and the wifi is good too. All in all, a lovely place to stay.

Charming home close to Fairy Tale Village of Foix

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just spent a wonderful week at Brian and Georgette's home in L'Herm, just outside Foix. Their caretakers, Marc and Josette welcomed us, even though our plane landed late in Toulouse. It's just a bit over an hour's drive and the French countryside becomes even more beautiful and quaint as you approach the home. Foix is truly a fairy tale village, complete with an impressive Chateau overlooking the charming red tiled roofs and the restaurants are wonderful. The VRBO home is exactly as pictured, with lovely terrace, well appointed kitchen complete with all you need to whip up a French meal -- if you decide to eat at home rather than at one of the dozens of fabulous local places in this lovely countryside. A lovely welcome basket was waiting for us and Marc fixed up a cheery fire. Josette had cleaned the place top to bottom. The master bedroom, with king bed and ensuite shower, was very comfortable. The living room and dining room have clean, modern furniture with a French Provencal touch. I hesitate to rave so much because I'm afraid the home won't be available when we want to return, but I must be honest....this place is a find. The wifi worked like a charm, although you should be prepared to "unhook" from TV as there is no cable or satellite. But who needs it when there are so many chateaux, hikes, underground rivers and beautiful countryside places at your finger tips. Carolyn and Howard, Richmond, Massachusetts, USA

A lovely house in a great locaation

  • 5 of 5

Georgette is very efficient at dealing with enquiries and provided us with all the information we needed regarding the house and area. Its a very spacious house, the location is perfect, you feel you are deep in the hills but its reassuring to know that you are part of a small hamlet and Marc, one of the neighbours is very helpful. Foix and the excellent supermarkets are just a short trip away and there are some excellent local markets in the area, we certainly enjoyed shopping for local produce and then consuming it along with the excellent local wine. We would recommend a trip to the Friday market at Lavalanet followed by lunch at the Redevous in Leran and a trip to the amazing Lac (and swim if its warm enough). The house is clean and well maintained and there are clear operating instructions for everything and we would have no hesitation in recommending the property. The layout - with the spacious sleeping area on the lower floor a

and the three bathrooms means the property would suit three couples/friends or multi-generational families sharing.

Generously equipped house in idyllic hollow

  • 5 of 5

Baragne is a small hamlet which is fairly remote but by no means isolated, where the house sits high up above the neighboring buildings. Therefore, dramatic views are enjoyed from the large patio area, which also serves as a wonderful platform for viewing the wildlife (deer, birds of prey etc) and the night sky (Milky Way is spectacular). A pretty back garden serves as an alternative place to relax, and here a lavender bush hosts many interesting butterflies. You can hear the burbling of the stream down below. The house is large and spacious with comfortable furniture, beds and outside loungers. Decent showers and quality bedlinen provided. There were good quality white goods in kitchen and utility room, and some basics such as coffee, herbs, sugar etc. The house was very clean on arrival and was easy to keep clean. A generous welcome basket full of nibbles and a bottle of local wine usefully provided for our needs before we were able to get out to the supermarket. There was an excellent selection of DVDs and books, and a iPad Doc player to plug your mp3 into (you will need a jack lead). We can't think of anything lacking in the house. It is not far to Foix, it took us 12 minutes to drive, and we had a wonderful meal at Phoebus. The minor road to Lavelanet is beautiful and not difficult, so is the road to Mirepoix via Dun and Rappy. The area is interesting, pretty, and feels fairly undiscovered by tourists, so was not too busy. Brian and Georgette were enormously helpful and sent us plenty of helpful information prior to the stay. Would be pleased to stay again sometime.

Car: necessary

Baragne is in a lovely, peaceful rural area but with excellent access to see the Cathar Castles, towns and villages, wineries, activities etc We are only an hour from Toulouse and 1 1/2 hours from Carcassonne, the beaches at Narbonne and the Mediterranean coast are 2 hours away.

Foix is a lovely town, partly pedestrianised, with its wonderful Chateau and weekly Friday market and lots of cafes and restaurants. It has the major supermarkets of Intermarche and E LeClerc both with petrol. Foix is on the train line to Toulouse and to Tarascon and Ax Les Thermes and La Tour de Carol for connection to the touristic Little Yellow Train (Le Petit Train Jaune).

Mirepoix with its medieval, half-timbered houses, wood pillars and covered arcades and numerous cafes is well worth a visit at any time but the weekly Monday market is a must-see, the best in the region.

Ariege is a wonderful area to explore with numerous Castles, walks, rivers, medieval Churches and villages. There is hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, horseriding and drives around the National Parks. Driving into the mountains to find 'hidden' lakes and panoramic views is one of the many delights.

The stunning, walled city of Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi are easily accessed from the house, also St Girons and the beautiful St Lizier.

We are also close to Labouiche, the underground river, and to many famous caves including the awe inspiring Grotte de Niaux (must be pre-booked and is well worth the effort being one of the only truly original and unspoilt cave drawing sites still open to the public).

As well as Montsegur, there are also castles at Roquefixade and at Chateau Lordat, all close by.

Driving into the mountains through Tarascon, Vicdessous and Ax les Thermes is easy with excellent roads and stunning scenery to be discovered.

There are walks and hikes to suit all ages and abilities from the newly opened Chemin Vert (the Green Way) along the old rail tracks from Foix to St Girons and another from Mirepoix, right up to the hiking paths in the mountains such as the Sentier Cathar. As you can see, there is plenty to do and the Tourist Office in Foix will have all the up to date information, or you can just relax and enjoy some lovely meals out on our wonderful terrace!
