The house, named 'Dir Treu' (Faithful to You), is just across the road from the ocean shore.
The house views span Greenings Island, The Hinckley Company marina, Somes Sound, Bear Island lighthouse and the Western Way channel. A small beach for skipping stones or finding sea glass is located right at the waterfront across from the driveway. The beach is a great excursion for all ages - particularly children.
The house has a great deck in addition to water views. On 3/4 an acre of land, Dir Treu has a good sized backyard area for children to play (a tree swing), gets great sunlight, the ocean breeze and views of the sunrise and sunset. Just down the street there is free access to the Manset Town Dock and the Cranberry Island Ferry service. Furnishings have the Maine cottage look.
Southwest Harbor, Maine is on the coast of Maine approximately 5 hours north of Boston. Located across the island from the popular tourist location of Bar Harbor, Southwest is a small town with access to all of Acadia National Park and the surrounding islands. The closest airports are Bar Harbor (also called Trenton) and Bangor. The house is 5 minute drive or a 10-15 minute walk from the center of Southwest Harbor.
The rental season typically runs from Memorial Day (May 30th) to Columbus Day (Oct 15th or so). June, September and October are popular with bikers, hikers and others who enjoy the changing seasons or the turning fall leaves.
This house is for non-smokers and no pets or animals are allowed. The house has a guest limit of 8. Parties of more than 8 may only be approved by the owner and noted in the rental agreement for a specified rate.
This house is representative of our love affair with the area. It's a wonderful expansive ocean view with lots of room for family time. Our kids love the back yard as well as the beach.
We flew in from Texas and Florida to Boston and drove up to Maine to celebrate our mother's 73rd birthday.
The drive up was very easy and worth the savings in the flight price. We rented from Budget Car Rental, which is not our usual place, but the coupon was too good to pass up. The line was 1 1/2 hours - not fun. But we were very happy with the SUV we got. It was very comfortable and got good gas mileage. We stopped in Newburyport for lunch, as a family member recommended we stop there. We were so glad they did, we loved this small town. Lunch was great.
This was our first visit to Maine and we had an amazing time. The house was as listed/described. The owner was wonderful to work with. The house was spotless when we arrived and perfect for our group of 8 people. While we were there our kids fished off the dock across the street most every night, we hiked many times in Acadia National Park (a national treasure), visited Bar Harbor, and enjoyed the amazing restaurants. We were happy to be in Southwest Harbor instead of Bar Harbor for a little more quiet stay. The view off of the deck is beautiful and relaxing. We spent a lot of time on the deck catching up. We also had fun playing the family games they had, indoor and outdoor. The kitchen was well stocked to cook with and the grocery stores are great.
This is the second house we have rented through VRBO. The first one was in Carmel, CA, and it was perfect. We were there in March 2013. The weather in March was lovely as was the weather in Maine. Sunny every day.
Thank you for sharing this house! Mom's birthday was a special one.
We had a great time in this lovely house. The owner has supplied it thoughtfully with just about everything you could want or need: lots of games and puzzles, 2 bikes, and a well supplied kitchen. The water view is so nice; we really enjoyed our coffee on the deck each morning, and our wine and cheese in the evening to enjoy the sunset. The description of the house is accurate. Our group included 4 adults and 2 children, and we were very comfortable and pleased with the house. The town of Southwest Harbor is so nice, and there are specialty stores for gourmet foods, a bakery, as well as a nice little grocery store further down the road. The Island bus stops nearby approx. every hour. The owner was very helpful regarding what to do and where to go, and a detailed list is provided upon payment of the rental fee. Our deposit was returned promptly, too. All in all, we had a great time.
We had a great time staying in this rental house while visiting Acadia National Park. The house was clean and ready for us when we got there. It has 4 bedrooms on the 2nd floor and one in the basement. We use 4 rooms upstairs for 8 of us. The master bedroom is very large with a great view. One suggestion is that the queen bed in the room next to the master bedroom needs a new mattress.
Kitchen is well stocked with cookware and utensils that we needed. Internet connection through wireless was also working fine. The view is wonderful from the porch, and it only took one minute to walk down to the dock and a few minutes away from the ‘downtown’ area. We enjoyed the Little Notch bakery and their pizza when we visited the downtown. The IGA grocery store is also not far, which supplies all the daily necessities. The owner has been very easy to work with and the security deposit was returned without any issue in a timely manner. We enjoyed our one-week-stay here.
We found the property and house as advertised. When we arrived the house and furnishings were clean and ready to go. Southwest Harbor is a great area, close to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. The owner was very helpful and informative to our questions. There are are nearby restaurants in Southwest Harbor that we really enjoyed. Some family members kayaked right from the nearby waterfront. We enjoyed are stay so much that we are returning this coming July.
We rented this property in July 2011. We found everything at the house as listed. The house and furnishings are in great shape and is located in quiet area and just far away enough from Bar Harbor. There are alot of things to do in Southwest Harbor and nearby Acadia Natonal Park. We had family members that kayaked right from the nearby waterfront. The house is located near the local bus route. The bus provides free transportation to nearby towns including Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. .We enjoyed the house and location so much that we are planning on renting again this July... The owner was helpful in making our arrangements as easy as possible.
The town dock is at the end of the driveway, Boats are able to utilize this dock for free and renters may contact the Southwest HarborMaster to rent a mooring for an additional weekly fee. Power boats can be rented 1 block down the road through Manset Yacht Service.
