This authentic, rustic, post and beam cabin is located on a southern point of 11 mile long Toddy Pond outside of Blue Hill. Tucked in the woods, surrounded by 4 acres of pine and white birch trees, this private cabin is ideal for nature lovers who enjoy outdoor activities and who would like to explore the entire Blue Hill Peninsula, Mt. Desert Island, and Acadia National Park. The 4 bedrooms, 3 baths (plus an outside shower), eat-in kitchen, large living room, screened porch, and three outside decks comfortably accommodate 8 people. Cabin layout is ideal for two families.
Relax while enjoying the water view from every room in the cabin or while watching the sun rise or sun set from the large pier off the 600' of water frontage. Enjoy swimming, fishing, and boating on pristine Toddy Pond; get some exercise and scout for moose by hiking through the woods; or just sit and listen to the loons and watch the bald eagles and osprey soaring over the Pond. Tennis courts and golf courses nearby; kayaks/canoes can be rented in town and delivered directly to the Cabin. RENTALS RUN SUNDAY TO SUNDAY
What a glorious place. We all just loved it. Started our week with a trip to Acadia and a visit to Jordon Pond House for the best popovers and tea. We hiked, walked on the beach, climbed the rocks. Truly beautiful. We also visited Deer Island, art galleries, Haystack (not to miss). We kayaked to the island across Toddy Pond for a picnic, went to see the beaver dam, picked lots of blueberries, learned how to cook 'live' lobsters, gazed at the most beautiful stars. Loved the outdoor shower. Don't want to leave. Hopefully next year we can stay longer. Thanks for your hospitality and for making your home such a relaxing and comforting house for our vacation.
The house is nicer than in the pictures, for sure. It's very spacious and comfortable, and has most everything you need. We were a group of five adults, and never felt crowded. I agree with the other reviewer, it's a good balance of rustic character and modern conveniences. The screened in porch is an excellent place to read a book or do a jigsaw puzzle. The lake is beautiful and extremely quiet (it seemed like the other sections of the lake were more populated). We loved hanging out on the dock and swimming out to the swim float. There are a few things that would make it more perfect - a new set of knives and silverware, and a ladder at the end of the dock (there are a lot of rocks, so a bit tricky to get in the water). Yes, it's a bit of a drive down the road to the house, but it's not at all bumpy, so they have done a good job at grading it – no problem at all. It's quite convenient to Blue Hill and other locations - we zipped to the Blue Hill food coop a few times, had lobster rolls at Bagaduce Lunch, and went to the amazing pizza night at Tinder Hearth Bakery. We have rented many lake houses in the area, and this ranks among the best.
Since we stayed at the Birk Cabin in early July I have been told by the owners that the "long and winding road" has been filled with new gravel making traveling much easier. I can't say enough good things about Birk Cabin and the owners. If you want a place to relax and rejuvenate, and get out to see the gorgeous area, this place is for you!
The Birks' home on the pristine Maine lake known as Toddy Pond is a quintessential Maine cabin paradise. From the moment you make a reservation inquiry, to the moment you finally turn down the long, winding, magical unpaved road to this beautiful cabin in the woods on Jeremiah Cove, Jane and Alan make you feel like a welcomed guest. This was our second time renting the Birks' cabin and we did so for two weeks this time around, as one week flew by far too quickly when we last came. Other than a few upgrades here and there, the place is in the same pseudo-rustic state as last time, and we could not have been happier because of it. There is nothing like being on a lake deep in the woods while having all the comforts of home (dishwasher, three full bathrooms, clothes washer/dryer, etc.).
The Birks have found the perfect balance of rustic Maine charm and modern convenience. The decor of the cabin - from the furniture to the artwork - is comfortable and easy. And the beds are all very comfortable too. There is no air conditioning, but it hardly ever gets hot enough in Maine to need it and you don't travel to the middle of nowhere in the woods - fresh air blowing off the lake - only to close the windows and jack up the A/C. Mosquitos in the evenings are plentiful; a little insect repellent and a few citronella candles go a long way toward eliminating that problem.
From quiet mornings on the private dock watching the sun rise, to diving off the floating barge150 feet from shore, to floating in an inner tube, to kayaking, swimming, fishing, swinging in the 2-person hammock, and settling back down on the dock to watch one of the most amazing sunsets you'll ever see, followed by a cookout and campfire, there is enough to do here for days on end without ever leaving. If you do get the itch to venture out and explore the area, there is a ton to do. We chartered a private boat tour of Bar Harbor with Capt. Shaw (Sea Venture Boat Tours) aboard his converted lobster boat-highly recommended-and had a few amazing dining experiences at Arbor Vine restaurant. The only bad part about the Birk's Cabin is having to leave after a week or two to go home. Otherwise, it's pure tranquility and absolute heaven.
We just returned from a glorious week at the Birk Cabin. The cabin was very clean and comfortable. The owners welcomed us upon arrival and were so very thoughtful. They even put up cones and signs to tell vehicles that there were children playing in the area. We spent much time on the screened porch that overlooked Toddy Pond playing games, drinking coffee in the morning and cocktails in the evening. We caught fish from the pier every day. Put your hook in the water and pull it up with a fish. It was very enjoyable to sit in the comfy chairs on the pier and watch the activity on the lake....mainly fish and birds. We have stayed in MANY rental homes and condos in our travels and found the kitchen to be the best stocked of any we have visited. We wanted it and it was there. The home is rustic but beautiful. It made me think of the cottage in the movie "On Golden Pond". The quiet was amazing! There were just a few things that kept me from giving this rental an excellent rating. It is a three mile drive on a gravel, pot-holed road, so going anywhere was not easy. The heat- in the high 80s and very humid- and mosquitos were miserable (but the owners have no control over nature). Air conditioning would have been a plus. All in all, I would highly recommend this home to anyone.
