A long time resident of Litlle Switzerland. Love anything and every thing related to outdoor activities.
A week away from the hustle and bustle at Rick"s Pinewoods Home was exactly what we needed to celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary! It is a wonderful mountainside home with the best view in the Valley! Tucked away into seclusion, you'd never know a Walmart existed just a short drive away! The hot tub on the deck was a seller for us as we enjoyed it every evening. Little Switzerland's village just down the driveway provided some nice conveniences close by. No doubt if you are looking for a wonderful place and the most pleasant, and accommodating property owner choose the Pinewoods. You will be happy you did!
My wife and I recently stayed for a week at the Pinewoods for our honeymoon. First of all, the pictures really don't do the cabin justice. The interior is very warm and cozy without being overly rustic. The space was great for just me and my wife but it would have been roomy for groups of 4 to 6 people too. The hot tub was warmed up and ready to go when we got there and the outdoor grill was easy to use. The best part was how secluded the cabin was. There were no other cabins within sight and there was a beautiful mountain view from the outdoor deck. But there was a nice coffee shop and general store with a few essentials right off the mountain road just 5 minutes from the cabin. And there was a nice Walmart just 15 minutes away for groceries. So you get the best of both worlds, privacy and convenience. The owner, Rick, was very friendly. He asked us to leave some things on the porch that he'd left there while cleaning and he picked them up without us even noticing. And on our last day when we found our car battery dead, Rick showed up within 20 minutes to give us a jump. All in all, we had a wonderful and relaxing stay and would definitely recommend this rental to our friends!
I am a solo female traveler who rented this house for 2 weeks. Highlights:
1) Arrival day temperatures were high and I had perishable food ; Rick refused to let me into the house 40 min. ahead of schedule (and it was EMPTY at the time). Effect: I had to sit in a parking lot with the A/C on for 40 min. after driving for 5 hours. 2) The house was HOT and facing west with no shades causing the entire side of the house (view side) to be unendurable. I told him it was hot upon arrival, he said it would cool off: it didn’t and by 9:00 p.m. I was ready to go to a hotel, but called him about that and noise from a hot tub. His response: He was comfortable in his home, and directed me to the electrical panel. Effect: I hardly got any sleep that night. He eventually purchased ONE fan ($ 19.99 @ Walmart) that I had to move around the house with me in order to keep semi cool. 3) The BIGGEST issue is his disrespect for my privacy, after being out of the house all day I returned: Day: 1) a knife in my bedroom, Day 2: sunglasses on the floor, Day 3, HIS sandals by MY bed. I confronted him and told him I would put these things in a drawer and not to come in the house unless I called him. Day #4 I was IN the house, car/bicycle parked feet from the front door…no knocking, no apology, he just WALKED IN! I had a meltdown and yelled thru the door to stay away; I was so unnerved: I had no idea if he would come again, and if so, when where ..Result: I was MORE stressed out than when I arrived! …I have rented from VRBO since 2005 and never had such a terrible experience. In summary: house not very clean, dishes in d/w, but the heat, the sheer audacity of his disregard/disrespect for me personally and my privacy made this the WORST VRBO experience I have ever had. I would also BET that if I was WITH someone else, he would have acted differently. Also, I have limited space but whatever his response is, trust me, take it with a grain of salt because my account is actually toned down
My fiancee' and I had a wonderful week in Little Switzerland at this gorgeous cabin. Rick was very friendly and responsive to all our needs. The views from the cabin were incredible. Loved the clouds rolling right into you on the porch while sitting in the hot tub. Sat down by the fire at night when temperatures cooled off a bit. We did a lot of hiking to local waterfalls(Linville and Crabtree), visited close by towns of Spruce Pines for Golf, dining and fireworks, Blowing Rock to see the Rock and incredible views and of course Boone. Also visited close by Asheville to visit the Biltmore Estate and Gardens. Hit Lake James for a cookout, canoeing and swim. Warm comfortable temperatures during the day and perfect cooling temperatures to sleep to at night. Favorite Restaurants were Mountain View Restaurant with an incredible view and excellent food. A very affordable and friendly Mexican Restaurant downtown (El Ranchero). The Switzerland Inn, we ate on the deck to take in the view. I had a blackened chicken pasta dish that I will be craving for quite a while. The local lunch hangout is the Cafe on the corner serving a quality barbecue. We took long drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway with views that took your breath away while portions of the curvy drive do the same, especially when you go out over air - a bit freaky. Loved it and our time in Little Switzerland. The perfect getaway from the heat and humidity here in Southern Florida. Thanks Rick
We stayed the first week in October and had a delightful time. The property is tucked away nicely but yet very easy to get to and very close to all the attractions. Very quiet and peaceful, a great place to relax. Everything in the cabin worked well and we found it very clean. Rick was a very gracious host going out of his way to make sure we were comfortable.
Little Switzerland is nicely centrally located to all the major areas we were interested in: Mount Mitchell, Crabby Falls, Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock, and Ashville was less than an hour away.
The only con was that our AT&T cell service would only work from near Spruce Pine. But the WiFi in the cabin was very strong and reliable, so plenty of Internet.
This place is definitely a do-over!
My wife and I came here for our honeymoon in September 2014, and all of our expectations were exceeded. We were looking for a secluded mountain getaway with a wood burning fire place, and Rick's house was the perfect fit.
The house is wonderfully tucked away to the point where you won't know any neighbors exist unless you go for a walk searching for them. From the house, there is no other home you can see. At night there was only one man-made light in view, and it was on the other side of the valley a good 1-3 miles away. The house is so secluded, there's no need for any blinds or curtains on the mountain view side; there's simply no one to disturb you. The home is live-in ready, clean, well-maintained and beautiful. Waking up to a mountain sunrise and watching the mountain sunset was so beautiful, and the crisp mountain air was super refreshing. The beds and bedding were comfortable, the couch and chairs were comfortable, the fire place was easy to figure out and the Jacuzzi tub was large and relaxing.
Rick is an exceptionally friendly man, he answered all our questions leading up to the day of arrival, and he even came out to the house on our last day to give us a jump because our car battery was dead. I couldn't have asked for more from him.
I have no complaints whatsoever, and I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a romantic getaway, looking to get away from society for a bit, or wanting a to stay in a beautiful mountain house. You'll love the house, the view, and working with Rick.
