Guestbook comments from the owner

Excerpt from Guest Book:

"Dear Sterling & Trisha,

Our family had a glorious vacation and it started when we arrived at your home. Staying for two weeks gave us the opportunity to really settle in and enjoy your home and this side of the Big Island.

We balanced quality relaxation time with sightseeing. We have travelled all over the world and this is the first time we actually rented a home and "what a home!"

Two quotes sums up our experience. My mother-in-law: "I was just ecstatic and taken aback with my room and time here." Our eight year son, who has been to Disneyland, San Diego, Hawaii on two previous visits, Florida, Jamaica and many other places: "This is the best vacation ever!"

Beautiful & perfect

  • 5 of 5

The house is absolutely beautiful & I would recommend it highly. The kitchen is stocked, home is clean, located remote enough to feel relaxing and close enough to be easy to access the sights of the big island. The sounds at night are an added treat! I did not think I would use the hot tub but after many long/difficult hikes the hot tub was a pleasant help & used often. The owners are committed to making your stay comfortable. There is no AC however, there are fans in every room and with the windows and screens opened and the fans on the house was very comfortable. I found the owners to be friendly, kind, and easily accessible with dialogue and communications simple, direct, and easy to understand. The home was beyond my expectations and I cannot rate it highly enough!

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Had a great time staying a week here with our two sons, their wives, and our granddaughter. The three bedrooms worked out well for all of us and we had plenty of space. We were able to enjoy all our meals outside in the covered dining area. Nice atmosphere with the tiki torches lit in the evening. Yard is fairly private with the bamboo fencing surrounding the property. Also enjoyed swimming in the thermal pond with the fish. It was great being within walking distance of the Kapoho tide pools. Would definitely stay here again!

Beautiful spot, well-equipped house, but remote.

  • 4 of 5

What I loved about Lagoon Shangri-La was the inviting pond right outside the door, ready for a refreshing dip anytime of day or night, as well as the tide-pools, which provided some of the best snorkelling I've ever experienced. The house was also well-equipped, especially the kitchen. What was less than ideal was how far the house is from everywhere; it was a minimum of 45 minutes of driving to get to almost any site, and usually more than an hour. So we paid for this paradise with many hours in the car just to see other parts of the eastern side of Big Island (e.g. Volcanoes National Park) Also, the house could have been better cleaned and maintained: the hot tub thermostat didn't work so we couldn't use it, the fridge was missing a handle (though there was a penciled apology about that in the kitchen), there were squished mosquitos on the wall of the master bedroom (with blood splotches!), and several house accessories were grimy and dusty, such as the much-needed fans. Given we paid $275 in advance for cleaning, the house should have been spotless. When we called the owner's number about a maintenance problem, we were told to call the maintenance man ourselves. Dennis came twice and was totally delightful and a pleasure to deal with; we had no beef with him, and enjoyed chatting. But we were left with the impression that these were absentee landlords who did a beautiful job of planning, providing and decorating, but do not check up on the house regularly, and it shows.

We Found Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Lagoon Shangrila! Kapoho Vacationland is a wonderful neighbourhood. Beautiful, quiet and serene.

We thoroughly enjoyed our long walks ever morning, and the tide pools were incredible for snorkelling!

The home had everything that we needed, the yard was beautiful, the hot tub clean and relaxing at the end of a long day, and the BBQ and outdoor dining area were enjoyed every day.

The coqui frogs took some getting used to at night, as well as the lack of air conditioning, but we managed.

Sterling responded quickly when we had some issues with wifi, which was greatly appreciated.

We loved the little town of Pahoa, especially Kaleo's, where we enjoyed 2 lunches, a dinner and afternoon drinks and dessert! Great food, staff and ambiance!

We highly recommend this beautiful home!

Wonderful home, wonderful location!

  • 5 of 5

Myself and my 2 older sons enjoy this home very much. There was so much room we didn’t even use one room/bathroom. We loved the pond right in the front yard for swimming and I loved cooking/eating by the grill in the “outdoor” dining area. The house was well supplied with everything except basic groceries the home was nice and clean and well kept up. The check in was easy and when we had a question about the Internet, the response was quick. Thank you for letting us enjoy your home.

The area is out of the busy popular areas, but is wonderful with nearby tide pools that are great for exploring and snorkeling as well as a park 5 minutes drive away, where you can swim/snorkel in 90’ water heated by volcano rocks. It’s full of tropical fish. My kids loved it, even we t when it rained. Hope to come back some day.
