Guestbook comments from the owner

Excerpt from Guest Book:

"Dear Sterling & Trisha,

Our family had a glorious vacation and it started when we arrived at your home. Staying for two weeks gave us the opportunity to really settle in and enjoy your home and this side of the Big Island.

We balanced quality relaxation time with sightseeing. We have travelled all over the world and this is the first time we actually rented a home and "what a home!"

Two quotes sums up our experience. My mother-in-law: "I was just ecstatic and taken aback with my room and time here." Our eight year son, who has been to Disneyland, San Diego, Hawaii on two previous visits, Florida, Jamaica and many other places: "This is the best vacation ever!"

Mahalo.

Lagoon Shangrila, a very relaxing, great house.

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay in a VRBO and it has sold me on using them in the future, whenever possible. We stayed here for 10 days in July. Lagoon Shangrila was exactly as pictured. The private tidepool/pond was actually larger than it seemed in the picture. We had fun just cooling off in it. All 3 bedrooms were great, although the shower heads in all three bathrooms need some work or cleaning (water sprayed in multiple directions). It was great having the outdoor shower to rinse off after snorkeling. It was nice having the kitchen supplies available (spices, condiments) so we didn't have to buy everything. The BBQ was an added benefit. The neighborhood was peaceful and tranquil. Easy walk to the beautiful tidepools (bring water shoes for walking on the lava rocks). This property was very well maintained, overall.

The owner was very responsive to our only problem. Our son locked himself out of his room (his was the only room with a keypad lock). We contacted the maintenance guy who contacted the owner who called us within 5 minutes to give us the code.

This is the place if you want to get away from it all. You have to drive 15 minutes (in beautiful countryside) to get to the Pahoa grocery store or restaurants.

We recommend Kaleo's Restaurant in Pahoa. We also recommend the Maku'u Farmer's Market on 130. It's open on Sundays and you can get a wonderful variety of fruit (try the white pineapple) as well as jewelry and clothing or gift items. Just watching for the wildlife is a fun activity, as well. We had mulitple visits from a mongoose. Lots of geckos to watch, and we even saw a wild boar walking across the street one evening!

I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family, and wouldn't hesitate to return again.

Owner's Response: Aloha Jon, Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We are thrilled that you had an enjoyable stay at Lagoon Shangrila and look forward to welcoming you back soon. Sorry about the 3rd bedroom door. Hope it wasn't too much of an inconvenience. Will make sure the shower heads are tightened and cleaned of any calcification that may affect the water flow. You Won't Be Disappointed

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

We had such a wonderful time at this home I don't even know where to start so bear with me:

-Beautiful, clean home, well decorated with a tropical feel to it. What you see in the pictures is what you get when you arrive. There was even a gift basket waiting for us when we arrived!

-The home comes stocked with virtually everything but your food. Dishes, utensils, coffee makers, pots, pans, BBQ tools, laundry supplies, towels. It was like being at home and was a very convenient and really nice touch.

- The PRIVATE SWIMMING LAGOON. Perfect temperature for swimming day or night. Watching the fish swim around you is so beautiful. Also a hot tub.

- The outer fencing around the property (with locking gate) gives you a great sense or privacy and security. We felt comfortable leaving our teenage daughter hanging out in the lagoon area while we went on evening walks.

- Excellent location- off the beaten path in a beautiful, quiet resort community (but with a small town with grocery/gas and a couple of restaurants 15 minutes or so away). Also the Kapoho Tidepools are literally a few minutes walk away. We had a great time snorkeling in them.

-Everything is labeled in the house, along with a good guidebook, and it made finding and sing everything in the home very easy.

-Outdoor shower and hose for washing off beach wear, snorkel gear, etc was a great touch and made things easy.

-The outdoor dining area was just as pictured and was a delight to eat in (especially with the tiki torches going).

-Wifi/Satellite TV is provided and worked great. We have Verizon and noticed we had good cell service (including 4G)

- We didn't use the BBQ or the chairs in the sun lounging area but that was a nice touch.

We don't have any complaints. We had high expectations from the pictures and they were fully fulfilled when we arrived. If we decide to stay in that area of Hawaii again we'll definitely consider staying here again.

Beautiful Property

  • 4 of 5

I would like to preface this review with the fact that I have been coming to HI for 20 years and have stayed at many places besides my place in Kona. I love to come and stay on this side of the island for a few days every year. As they say location, location. I love the location of this property to the tide pools, as they are amazing! And, it's at a decent distance to the volcano, winery, Hilo, etc. You are welcomed with a beautiful gift basket in the entry, with some local treats....a very nice bonus!!

The property is beautiful! I would say it is one of the best within this neighborhood. This would be exactly what I would purchase if buying a home. Beautiful manicured grounds, a lava pond to float, and a nice sized home. It truly is paradise.

I am not too picky of a person and I have stayed at some crazy places in my lifetime. the only thing I am particular about is cleanliness. Some things didn't bother me that might irritate some people....the freezer took 2 days to freeze a couple of bottles of water, it had an ice maker that didn't make ice, almost all tiki torches were out of oil, and some of the outdoor furniture seating was unusable as the fabric seats were ripping out. What bothered me was I realized when I was showering that there was alot of black curly hair on the wall. About that same moment I saw that, I stepped on something, and it was someone's used razor. The shower stalls are beautiful stone color so it blended in and I didn't see it originally entering the shower. I told my husband, when I got out, about all the crazy hair and razor...he kind of laughed at me until he went to throw some water in the freezer and there was more black curly hair....blech...I felt everything else in the place was very clean including the linens. (Ps to the person after us...I left that shaver in there so if you find it too..........)

Again, a beautiful place....and thank you for sharing it!!!

YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED!!! Epic getaway home for a couple or an entire family!!!

  • 5 of 5

I only booked this place for mom and I, and we were truly blown away! It's a nice sized house, remodeled, clean, well decorated and appointed, plenty of fans and lighting, the list goes on. You'll love the gazebo with barbecue area, the lounge chairs for catching some sun, the hot tub for that relaxing soak, and the very cool private fish pond where you can take a nice dip. The fish even came up to say hi and nibbled on our toes. You'll want to light the tiki torches at night and even open up the huge sliding glass doors to let in that cool ocean breeze.

The neighborhood is nice. Pretty far from Hilo, but that's what we wanted. The tide pools are the coolest things since sliced bread. We felt like we were in our very own tropical aquariums! Tons of colorful vibrant coral, fish, and we eve saw a striped eel!!! Very cool experience indeed.

This is a great location for visiting the Puna side of the island, for checking out the lava from the ocean side where it ran over towns and roads, and for just getting away. Your cell phone will have little to no bars most of the time out on this side of the island. That's what we call vacation. And don't forget to check out Uncle Robert's Awa bar on Wednesday nights for a local style party atmosphere and live Hawaiian music. Too cool to miss.

This house delivers more than you would expect. Book it, you won't be disappointed!!

Our perfect 2nd honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved our stay at your beautiful property. I would get up early each morning and enjoy my coffee on the lanai, while listening to the birds singing and the sound of the surf nearby. Late afternoons were spent in the tidal pool for a perfect wind-down to a busy day exploring the island. The house was perfectly set up with nearly everything we needed. The only minor problem was the ice maker didn't work, but I'm guessing that you might not even be aware of that unless somebody mentioned it to you.

We fell in love with the village of Pahoa too, with all the friendly residents. We thought this would be a once in a lifetime trip for us, but we actually hope to go back sometime. Thank you for your welcoming hospitality and for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Beyond every hope and expectation

  • 5 of 5

The house was lovely. It was clean, comfortable beds, great outdoor space to eat and relax as well as indoor space with windows everywhere. I have never stayed in a kitchen that was so well appointed. Everyone could help cook and there were six of us!!!! Best of all were the tidal pools. We snorkled lots of places in Hawaii but, frankly, the tidal pools were as good or better than any of them. We loved our time there and would love to come again.
