Located in a Marine Conservation District, the sunny micro climate bathes Lagoon Shangrila in watercolors of a tropical paradise complete with vibrant colored fish and magnificent coral formations. Here you can harvest your own coconuts, swim in your own private warm swimming pond heated by the volcano, stroll the black or green sand beach, take a steam bath in a volcano vent, hike in the tall majestic rain forest, swim with schools of tropical fish, relax in the private Hot Tub under the stars, pick passion fruit and wild flowers on your morning walk.
Excerpt from Guest Book:
"Dear Sterling & Trisha,
Our family had a glorious vacation and it started when we arrived at your home. Staying for two weeks gave us the opportunity to really settle in and enjoy your home and this side of the Big Island.
We balanced quality relaxation time with sightseeing. We have travelled all over the world and this is the first time we actually rented a home and "what a home!"
Two quotes sums up our experience. My mother-in-law: "I was just ecstatic and taken aback with my room and time here." Our eight year son, who has been to Disneyland, San Diego, Hawaii on two previous visits, Florida, Jamaica and many other places: "This is the best vacation ever!"
Our group had six adults, my husband and me plus our two kids and their significant others. We had the house reserved for 9 nights. The home's location, just a block or so from the Kapoho Tidal Pools was a dream-come-true. We snorkeled there several times during our stay.
This trip was the first time my son's wife and daughter's boyfriend had met one another. This was also the first time all of us had vacationed together. The bedroom arrangement was perfect! Each of us had our own bath and the bedroom's themselves were spacious.
My only quibble was that the bedroom we stayed in lacked any type of drawer space. A small chest of drawers or shelving unit would have been very useful.
The location is convenient to National Volcanoes Park, Akaka Falls, Mauna Key and Uncle Robert's Nighttime market. We took advantage of all those and more from Lagoon Shangrila.
We used the hot tub, warm pool and patio dining area extensively. Our stay was during the winter. It rained off and on during our stay so we also used the indoor dining area which was almost as comfortable and lovely as the outdoor area. The small living area really did not accommodate six people, but again that was a small thing as we were rarely sitting in front of the tv.
Overall, this was one of our best vacations ever, and a great deal of the credit for that goes to Lagoon Shanrila for providing us with a perfect jumping off spot for all of our adventures on the west side of the Big Island.
We had a wonderful week at Lagoon Shangrila. The home had everything that we needed and Sterling was very helpful. Plenty of room for our 4 adults and 3 teenage girls. It was great to walk to the tidepools to snorkel and enjoyed seeing all the fish. We also walked to the Champagne Pond through the beautiful neighborhood. Easy access to the Volcano park, Hilo and the waterfalls. A nice quiet area where you get a feel for older Hawaii. We did a lot of exploring. We would definitely come back here again.
My husband and I live in TOKYO Japan.
From 25 years ago, we visited the Hawaiian Islands every year.
Lagoon Shangrila is best vacation rental where we stayed!!
There was everything. Beautiful Koi Pond, Jacuzzi and tide pools of Kapoho. We enjoyed the red lava hiking and snorkeling every day.
We will stay here in the next vacation!
This house is a great find in a great location! The house itself is beautiful, clean, nicely decorated and landscaped. The pictures are accurate (it even looked a little larger in person), and the layout is convenient. The owners, Trisha and Sterling, have thought of every detail - spices in the kitchen, towels, beach/snorkel gear, even drying racks for wet clothing, a nice treat basket - plus they were very responsive to the few questions we had, and sent us helpful info in planning activities. The house had plenty of space for the 5 of us (parents and kids ages 7, 10 and 12) - we could have easily fit a couple more. The pond in the yard was great - we swam and snorkeled in it every day - the blue and gray fish didn't seem to mind, though the big white and orange ones hid on the side and watched us. The hot tub was nice as well. The yard is filled with geckos, frogs that chirp at night, and other creatures that my kids loved to find. Very pleasant spot to cook out.
The tidepools are just down the road - great snorkeling in general, and especially for kids or those new to snorkeling. These pools made by lava make the water calm and relatively shallow (just wear water shoes to walk over rocks). There are many types of colorful fish, coral, sea urchins, eels, etc. (Later on our trip we did a snorkel cruise to the "best" spot on the Kona side, and we didn't see anything more than at the tidepools). Best to visit in the morning before it gets crowded, and/or around high tide when new fish have come in. We did a sunrise snorkel most of the mornings we stayed here.
This is a great spot to get to Volcano national park, about an hour away. The Kilauea Iki trail is a good option with young kids (3 miles, half across old crater), plus there are many longer hiking options, some out to current lava flows. Hilo is about an hour away, surrounded by lots of great waterfalls. I highly recommend the Umauma Experience ziplines (about 20 minutes north of Hilo). Restaurants we liked were Hilo Bay Cafe (good food, great location on Hilo Bay) and the pizza place in Pahoa - Boogie Woogie or something like that, we ordered to go.
If we return to the Big Island we would gladly stay here again!
We stayed 6 nights in this home and loved every minute. The location just up the street from the Kapoho Tidal pools is reason enough to stay here, but the house itself is just fantastic. It has a wonderful feel to it that is peaceful and tranquil. The pond provided hours of fun for our family. In fact, it was hard to get the kids to leave so we could snorkel in the Kapaho pools. The house is very comfortable, has all the supplies that a traveller would want, including fins, water shoes, noodles, boogie boards, etc. We cooked many meals in the kitchen and felt that nothing was missing. There are laundry facilities as well. Beds were comfortable, the decor is lovely, and the outdoor dining area was really nice to have. The owners are incredibly responsive, and accomodating. I can't say enough about how much we loved being here. We all felt sad about leaving and hope to be able to return.
This was our first stay in a VRBO and it has sold me on using them in the future, whenever possible. We stayed here for 10 days in July. Lagoon Shangrila was exactly as pictured. The private tidepool/pond was actually larger than it seemed in the picture. We had fun just cooling off in it. All 3 bedrooms were great, although the shower heads in all three bathrooms need some work or cleaning (water sprayed in multiple directions). It was great having the outdoor shower to rinse off after snorkeling. It was nice having the kitchen supplies available (spices, condiments) so we didn't have to buy everything. The BBQ was an added benefit. The neighborhood was peaceful and tranquil. Easy walk to the beautiful tidepools (bring water shoes for walking on the lava rocks). This property was very well maintained, overall.
The owner was very responsive to our only problem. Our son locked himself out of his room (his was the only room with a keypad lock). We contacted the maintenance guy who contacted the owner who called us within 5 minutes to give us the code.
This is the place if you want to get away from it all. You have to drive 15 minutes (in beautiful countryside) to get to the Pahoa grocery store or restaurants.
We recommend Kaleo's Restaurant in Pahoa. We also recommend the Maku'u Farmer's Market on 130. It's open on Sundays and you can get a wonderful variety of fruit (try the white pineapple) as well as jewelry and clothing or gift items. Just watching for the wildlife is a fun activity, as well. We had mulitple visits from a mongoose. Lots of geckos to watch, and we even saw a wild boar walking across the street one evening!
I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family, and wouldn't hesitate to return again.
