Step into Paradise when you enter the secluded sun drenched shores of Puako Beach. It's natural beauty is enriched by it's history of being an ancient Hawaiian Fishing Village. Our condo sits next to the ocean, and is the most affordable three bedroom, two full baths with all the amenities you will need to feel totally comfortable during your stay. The Village is made up of Million Dollar Luxury Beachfront Homes, our condo complex, and the General Store next door. There are seven beach access areas, where you will find incredible swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, or whatever makes you happy! You can stroll the coral reefs, find hundreds of tide pools, watch dolphins at play, and it's also home to the Green Sea Turtles, that bask in the sun along the shoreline. During the winter months you can watch the Whales migration.

Puako is my idea of a perfect place to stay. It's small and charming, with a quaint country store and walkable streets. Why stay in a cookie cutter resort? This condo is typical of the time it was built, unpretentious and comfortable. Although unit is on the first floor, it is very quiet and the shrubs shield the lanai so it doesn't feel exposed (just ask the gekkos). Having 2 full bathrooms is a big plus. The small galley style kitchen is well equipped (I'd love to see a liquid measuring cup,but that's just me). The condo has a closet of assorted beach gear to use and lots of towels. The washer & dryer came in handy and we used the gas grill daily. Bedrooms all have ceiling fans. (NOTE: keeping sliding doors and entry door open allows air to flow freely and condo stays cool ) The condo bldg has a great pool or you could walk a few minutes to access Puako bay for swimming and snorkeling. The building has recycling bins (yeah!! - I love to recycle - feels like home) Bonus feature: building has its own lemon, lime, and grapefruit trees and we were lucky enough to get some of the fruit.
Puako is centrally located and we easily drove up and down the coast for touring , beaching (Hapuna and A' beach), and shopping. I highly recommend going to the local fish market in Kawaihae ( on Hgwy 270, about a 10 minute drive) and across the street from the fish market is Avenue Shave Ice, the BEST shave ice we found on the island.
The condo owner is very nice to work with and takes time to make sure instructions and everything are in order. She even called me by phone to answer my questions directly rather than play tag with email. It's chancey to rent off the web, but Karen is trustworthy.
I'm saving my pennies to go back there.
You can't beat the price and the location to the beach and ocean front. Puako and Wailea Bay are our favorite places to stay.
Pros: great price made a longer stay possible, 3 bedrooms, lots of beach gear, comfortable mattress (king), nice pool, beautiful grounds with lots of fruit and flowers, accomodating owner and manager answered our requests for better pots and pans (stainless), an extra cleaning and some natural fiber blankets.
Cons: bedding was disappointing (pillows and sheets - only the king had natural fiber sheets, foam pillows), living room is small with oversized furniture (old, large crumbling leather couch), balcony furniture and table were also too large, bathroom vanities were very dated (sinks abraded, lights not fully working and old, showerheads old and ablative), lack of decoration/style (but that is better than poor decoration), super low kitchen counter made meal prep difficult....not a gourmet kitchen...missing some basics. (colander, salad spinner, more good plates, more serving dishes). Could use an update in furnishings with a consistent style.
I think next time we will pay a little bit more for an updated condo on a higher floor with a view of the ocean. When you travel with children you tend to spend more time in your room/unit so you want it to be nice.
Where we're coming from: We are environmentally conscious and prefer natural and organic food and furnishings, with a Dwell style (natural, modern).
We had a great time at this condo. We've previously stayed in rental homes in Puako, but have become priced out of those options. This condo was just perfect for our group. Comfortable beds, 2 bathrooms, small but well-equipped kitchen, and best of all, a two minute walk to the beach. This is not a "fancy" place as others have noted, but it is clean, comfortable, and allowed us a lovely ten days in our favorite spot in Hawaii. The gear closet has what you need for a great beach day, and the location really cannot be beat. Friendly neighbors and a friendly vibe overall. We'll be back!
Absolutely wonderful! Traveling with two teenagers, and having never been to the Big Island, I didn't know what to expect. This was our first family vacation in 13 years and we all had high hopes. We were all beyond pleased! The condo was well stocked with things I never expected, that made our stay even better. The amount of beach gear was great! Coolers, boogie boards, plenty of beach towels, beach mats, beach chairs, and on and on! The kitchen had all the cook/prep-ware that we needed and the BBQ on the Lanai was beautifully clean! The bedrooms had plenty of room and storage for all of us to spread out, and on those rare moments that we were not out and about experiencing all of Hawaii, there was plenty of room to sit and relax. The best beaches for relaxing, snorkeling, turtle watching, and tide pools are within walking distance! No need to drive into Kailua Kona except to fulfill my 18 year old daughter's desire to shop! Wiamea is just minutes away for groceries, farmer's market, and roadside Huli-Huli Chicken! The best part was the people! The owners of this condo are genuine and have a true Aloha Spirit! Very caring and sharing. We were able to experience the true Hawaii thanks to the sharing of knowledge of the Island. When I travel, I dive head first into the local way of life. I had that and more with my stay! We will be back!
My wife and our 3 teens really enjoyed this place, getting up in the morning to enjoy breakfast in the balcony, being greeted by funny, green Geckos. Condo location is steps from a beautiful small beach interspersed with sand and coral, and a boulder 50 yards into water which is sorrounded by coral, where you will see all kinds of tropical fish and turtles. Simply walk out of condo, go right on street and after a few houses look for beach access to your left, follow path to sandy beach. Also 2 of the best beaches in the islands are located 1-2 miles from condo: beach 69 and Hapuna. Mauna kea beach is also really close. The ruins of Puukohola are 10 mins away, right next to Spencer Beach. Location is perfect to explore kohala coat, Waimea and Waipio valley (which nobody going to Big Island should miss). Kona is 40 mins south. So it's a good idea to buy your groceries there if you are coming from Kona, there's a wonderful Costco with great values. The small grocery store next to condo is well stocked but can be pricey for a family of five. Condo has everything you could possibly need for cooking including outdoor grill, I enjoyed reading Karen's travel books, one on Puako and its history. It may feel hot inside but don't dedpair, just open those windows and the ocean breeze will rush in refreshing; in fact the breeze can get really rambunctious some nights; the hotter the daytime temperature the stronger the nighttime breeze, due to some atmospheric vacuum effect. Karen, the owner was a pleasure to talk to, she guided us through the whole rental process without any glitch. Hope to go back.....
We found the owner to be very responsive and easy to work with. My review is limited since we spent most of our days and nights off the property (did not use the kitchen, grill, pool, washer/dryer, or 3rd bedroom). The unit is clean, secure, and comfortable, and appears to be well-stocked. Parking is easy and there is a general store next door. We are happy customers and intend to return in the future.
Puako Beach is about 30 miles from Kailua Kona, 25 miles from the Kona Airport, on the beautiful Kahala Coastline. The home of The Parker Ranch, the town of Waimea, is only 12 miles up the hill, where there are great restaurants, two major grocery stores, and many other shops and stores. From Waimea, go another 20 miles or so, and you can be at Waipio Valley, a breathtakingly beautiful tourist attraction, with waterfalls, and a Black sand beach. Hapuna Beach, one of the top 10 beaches in the world, is two miles away from Puako Beach. A day trip to the Volcano National Park, home of the most active volcano in the world, is about 100 miles from Puako
Beach. There are hundreds of excellent dining places both expensive and reasonable at any of the major resorts within a 10 mile drive, as well as world-class golf courses, luaus, and shopping.
