Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8-12)

This is an another important year for Highbrook House as of December 15th 2012, we completed our kitchen renovation. Last year we added new stainless steel appliances in the kitchen. As part of our kitchen upgrade there are new cabinets, lighting, pantry and Granite Counter tops. Be one of the first to stay with us this year and enjoy a beautiful new kitchen.

If you have never been to Bar Harbor before and even if you have, I am sure you would want to be in a great location. Highbrook has it all!! Do you want to go into the village? No problem, you can walk because it's a short stroll of 10 to 15 minutes - OR - you can stand at the end of my driveway and the Island Explorer will pick you up - OR - you can drive. But don't get too comfortable because it's only 30 seconds away.

I am sure one of the reasons you want to visit is because of Acadia National Park. Can't get much better because the very popular Cadillac Mountain, Duck Brook and Eagle Lake entrances are right around the corner. About 10 seconds away. Even though you are very close to all of the key locations, Highbrook rests on almost an acre of land and is very peaceful and serene.

After a great day in the park, relax and enjoy a barbecue on the back deck or sip a lemonade on the patio. No one will see you. It's a great area for children because it's a residential area with only the locals using Highbrook road.

For your dining and entertaining all dishes, flatware, glasses, bowls, platters, pots and pans, cooking utensils, linens, towels are provided for your convenience. The house has everything you will need to cook up a storm.

Need to check e-mail from the office? Highbrook has WIFI for your laptop.

Highbrook features a Master Suite on the first floor that has a large and comfortable sitting besides a bay window with a view out to the very wooded 1/2 acre lot. The second floor features 3 additional bedrooms and 1 full bathroom. The back bedroom is expansive a comfortable with 5 windows, 2 sitting areas and a pull out sofa bed. A very comfortable and bright, cheery room.

The middle bedroom features a brand new bunk bed with a side staircase for easy access and a telvision. The front bedroom features 2 twin beds and is surrounded by windows and nature.

We hope that you select Highbrook House and enjoy our house as much as we do. Check our availability and then please call or e-mail. Whether calling or e-mailing you will hear back from me the same day.

Also check our website which has a link on this site and you will see additional information. We look forward to having your family stay with us this year and again and again and again.......

About Barbara

If your like me you hate talking about yourself. Do I talk about my profession? Bar harbor? Sports? Well I guess I should stick to the topic of why I am here. I've discovered that I enjoy vacation rentals and Bar Harbor. In my career I am in health care (yes the dreaded words today) and this other side of my life becoming involved in this industry is so different than my current profession but I enjoy talking to everyone who calls or e-mails me. Most of all I enjoy talking to you about Bar Harbor. I have hiked every trail, biked every road and enjoyed the area in spring, summer, fall and even winter. The beauty of the area never ceases to amaze me which is why I keep coming back.

Barbara purchased this house in 1998

Why Barbara chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

I love Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. It's a special place where the park meets the ocean and the scenary is spectacular. I came to this area 25 years ago for vacation and decided that I wanted to retire here and enjoy the present and the future. I have been blessed to have the opportunity to do just that. Everytime I come up here I come back a new person. But it gets harder and harder to leave. Someday my ship will come in and I will be here forever.

What makes this house unique

My first rental in Bar Harbor was at a house just around the corner from where Highbrook is located. When the house went up for sale I tried to buy it because I loved the location. Lucky for me that I was able to purchase Highbrook. The house is in a perfect location because I can walk into town, take the Island Explorer from my driveway, I'm around the corner from Eagle Lake, Cadillac Mountain and the Duck Brook entrances to the park, but yet I'm resting on almost an acre of land. I also wanted a house that had everything in it... my home away from home. Houses that I used to rent didn't have microwaves or even can openers... sometimes it's the little things that make one comfortable. That was a promise when I bought my house that it would have everything a family needs to enjoy their stay...... and the tradition continues today.

Great house for a family event

  • 4 of 5

The house is in a great location, out of the way and quiet, but still close to all the Bar Harbor has to offer. Plenty of room for our large family on our visit to the area to attend our daughter's college graduation. We especially enjoyed the spacious deck and grills during out stay.

Owner's Response: I am so glad everyone had a good time... We purchased Highbrook because we always rented in that neighborhood and we loved the house... Highbrook has the best location... around the corner from the park entrance, walk into town if you chose.... BUT it's very private resting on 1/2 acre of land... hope you can stay with us again... thank you for the kind words.

Great location, really nice home!

  • 5 of 5

Great location, access to all the major attractions. Lovely, clean home, lot's of yard space and represented accurately in photos. Well equipped kitchen and bathrooms plus plenty of linens, cozy living room, a lot of room for large dinner etc. There were 10 of us, all slept comfortably but please note that you must walk through a bunk bedroom to access the large bedroom. We had to change our sleeping arrangements to accommodate but it all worked out. The master bedroom and bathroom on the first floor was perfect for one of our couples who has difficulty with stairs. Had a great time!

Great location, lovely house

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time-it was sunny and pleasant the whole week. There were 8 of us, including our 3 adult children and their significant others. The house was lovely, just like the photos and very clean. The kitchen was quite nice and easy to use. The circulator bus into Bar Harbor stops across from the house and runs every 30 mins (every 15 afte 3 pm), but we also walked into town. Note that you must walk through the bunkbed room from the large bedroom into the hallway. But we expected this and it wasn't an issue. It was one of the best vacations we've ever had and made even better by staying at Highbrook.

What a difference and still a great location

  • 4 of 5

My family which included my sisters family included 4 adults and 4 children. We stayed at the house the first week of July. We used to be regular visitors until about 5/6 years ago when we felt the home needed a little upgrading.. What a surprise this year and it's a completely different home.. We are so impressed we even told our realtor about all of the changes. What a great home to stay at from a comfort level, it has all of the amentities you could possibly need, the best location you could ever hope for and our family had a great time.. We packed in alot of memories on this trip! The home has terrific access to all of the key areas and you get there so quickly... We didn't realize that the bus passes right by the house and we were able to get on without even leaving the house. The yard area now is much more expansive and our kids had a great time playing in the yard when we were not at the park. No fear about running into the street as it's a very residential neighborhood.. We cooked up a storm, ate alot and enjoyed the house, the family and the park. We are already talking about our return here next year. Highly recommend to anyone coming up to Bar harbor for their vacation.

Convenient Location

  • 3 of 5

The house was located close to shops and restaurants. Sleeping arrangements were good with one master on 1st floor with bath and the rest on the 2nd floor. Kitchen was narrow and did not lend itself to preparing large family meals with more than 2 people in the kitchen. The dishes and cookware were minimal. Numerous skillets but not enough pots and pans and only one had a lid. Dishes needed to be replaced but glassware was fine. We were three family groups with 2 teenagers and 2 young children which entailed lots of laundry and that was a problem. Washer was in the kitchen but you had to lug wet laundry through the narrow kitchen to room off back porch where the dryer was located. Although 1st floor master was convenient, the rest of the 1st floor did not lend itself to older adults or younger children. There were no less than a dozen throw rugs over the wood laminate floor and they presented a serious slip and fall hazard. The other big hazard was the raised brick platform for the stove/fireplace. It protruded way too far into the living and dining room areas and every one of us tripped over it more that once. Finally set our purses on the corner as a heads up warning when walking around it. All in all it was a good fit but with a little attention by management, it could be really great.

Weather was great so we enjoyed backyard but could have been better with a patio table on the deck instead of just chairs. There was a old picnic table out in yard but it was well worn. Kids enjoyed back yard as we saw fox and deer while there.

Owner's Response: thank you for your feedback... we always welcome our visitors comments.. We made numerous changes to continue to upgrade our home based on verbal and written feedback we received... It was a very busy year for Highbrook replacing new windows, new furniture in the living room.. 2 queen mattresses, 2 rooms had new curtains and furnishings AND we tried to get the house totally resided, but the bad weather during the winter didn't allow us to finish... so we did finish the front of the home and this year we hope the weather is good enough to finish.. I did want to address the comments as we always take them seriously... dishes and pots and pans were mentioned and we feel that is a strong point of the home. One cabinet has 3 lobster pot size pots and yes the lids were there on the top shelf. As much as I like my staff to put the cabinets back in order, sometimes there just isn't enough time to do it all..... the cabinets to the left and right of the new stove each have 3 regular sized pots. There are 9 frying pans. There are dishes for 20 people along with numerous other sized dishes to the right of the sink. When we renovated the kitchen we wanted to move the washer and dryer in the same room.. not feasible according to my construction guy.. So we put up a small divider wall with granite top to separate the washer from the ktichen area... The dryer is in the utility room, which is located in the foyer area and not the back of the house. it's steps to the foyer area and much more convenient than my other home was, where you had to walk down to the basement to do the laundry.. we provide 2 hampers and 2 laundry baskets to make it convenient for you to put your laundry in. When we put in the hardwood floors, we brought up our own carpet which is 7X10 for under the dining room table.. Since we bought new furniture in December, we discovered that when you sit on the furniture it slide and hit our walls.. so we have throws rugs in front of the sofa and love seat to put the legs of the furniture on.. When you come in from the balcony, the dirt came with you, we we put a throw rug there to prevent continuous direct stains on the floor. with every passing year, we buy new furniture for the back yard.. that was also this year with new side tables as well.. we move the picnic table to the far end of the yard as we like to personally use it when we are there. What we discover contineually is that our visitors drag it back near the grill to use.

Great house, location and a wonderful time by the family!!! We come to Bar Harbor every year and this was the first stay at this house.. the photos don't do it justice as the Master and Upstairs bedrooms are huge!!! Well stocked kitchen, with everything we needed for our stay.. very quiet neighborhood with no traffic.. Location, location, location.. we walked to town and the owner wasn't kidding when she said right around the corner from the park entrances... our family had a great time.. make sure you bike the carriage roads and eat the terrific popovers at Jordan Pond....

Owner's Response: I so happy to hear that you enjoyed HIghbrook.. I love the location of the homes in this neighborhood because they are private, yet close to absolutely everything. I used to stay right around the corner as a rental when I first started coming to Maine and I am glad I was able to find a home in this area.. The other nice feature of Highbrook is the master bedroom suite and upstairs bedrooms which are huge.... Hope you can come back and stay with us again.
