Rebecca's Fancy is ideal for couples who enjoy swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA, kayaking, sailing, hiking, star gazing, fishing, and beach combing right outside your door. Shallow calm waters, cool tropical tradewinds, lush landscaping, amazing rainbows, and enchanting starry nights await.
The spotless air-conditioned, one bedroom, one bath cottage has full kitchen with dishwasher, decks and patio with chaise lounges and gas grill. Rebecca's Fancy was designed and equipped with full amenities for your comfort and convenience. Nature provides all the sights, sounds and smells.
The friendly easy-going island of St. John remains one of the most pristine and uncrowded in the Caribbean. Most of St. John's land (2/3's) and surrounding waters are managed by the United States National Park Service. Rebecca's Fancy is located on the east end of St John on Hansen Bay, directly across from the accessible sandy beach.
After driving through the National Park's Hurricane Hole you arrive at the quiet East End that is remote and completely surrounded by aquamarine crystal clear waters, white sand beaches and breathtaking views. Several uncrowded beaches are a walk away. A relaxing ten minute drive to Coral Bay and you will enjoy dining, live music, horseback riding and boutique shopping. National Park activities are nearby.
Because our electricity is expensive and unreliable we installed a 8kwh solar system in 2013. We are powering the cottage and main house 100% with solar power and a battery backup system.

Greetings, after living in the Philadelphia area our entire lives and raising our 3 children there, we relocated to St. John in 2002 fulfilling a 12 year dream (plan)of living in our paradise. We have been fortunate to have traveled and visited many beautiful places around the world. When we first visited St John in 1989 we knew we found our paradise.
We designed and built Rebecca's Fancy ourselves to provide a practical and fun place to enjoy all that St John has to offer. Athena and I take pleasure in sharing our blessings with others. As our guests, you too will enjoy the magical sights, sounds and smells of St. John. Athena and Jay Swartley
JAY & ATHENA CALL 340-715-3002 purchased this cottage in 2006
We choose this property because of it's proximity to the beach and the sea 100 feet away! St. John is a small 20 square mile mountainous island with a limited number of properties that are on the water. Rebecca's Fancy is less than a quarter mile from the end of the road that begins at the ferry dock in Cruz Bay. This provides us a very quiet, peaceful place to live and enjoy all that St John has to offer.
Living in a private, quiet and safe community is a blessing. Most of our neighbors are full time residents. We chose to live here because we are remote and we hear the lapping up of the Hansen Bay waves, very serene...
Athena's knowledge of the East End was limitless. Her willingness to show us around was more than we could have ever hoped for. Even though we were here off season and most restaurants were closed, we had great meals at Island Blues and The Tourist Trap. Our favorite snorkel was right here in Hansen Bay. We look forward to our next visit.
We first stayed at Rebecca's Fancy over Thanksgiving 2016 and loved it so much....we returned on Christmas Day and stayed through New Years 2017! It is perfect for a couple who really want to get away from it all. The cottage is adorable, very clean, comfortable, well stocked with everything one would need (minus a full size oven, but that is ok for us because we love to grill). You wake up to roosters and the sounds of the sea which is literally across the road with nothing else around you! The view is beautiful and Hansen's Bay is remote, doesn't get crowded except for Sunday Funday when the local folks love to come and bring their dogs, which we loved. We met lots of interesting people and got our dog fix especially with the official Hansen Bay pooch, Fred who is a sweet black pit bull who loves to retrieve coconuts out of the water and wants to swim with everyone! We loved Hansen Bay because we love to snorkel and the water is pretty calm there and there are lots of reefs to explore. Kayaking and Paddle boarding are great here as well. The owners of the property live above the cottage and are incredibly warm and helpful. If you're lucky, you may even get a jar of honey that the owner gathers herself! I would say that you must have a car if you're staying on the East End and that taxi's are tough to get out there. If you go at Christmas, you MUST reserve your jeep as far ahead of time as possible! Skinny Legs and Indigo Grill are a short drive away and were our favorites. We love to cook so we got a big load of groceries from Cruz Bay and stocked the fridge...I would recommend doing that because even though it isn't far distance wise, the speed limit and terrain can make that trip longer. Overall, there isn't much traffic except for downtown Cruz Bay. We highly recommend staying here if you love serenity and nature!
What a beautiful location! We loved the natural beauty, the quiet, and the laid-back vibe. The donkeys, chickens, sheep and goats were just another aspect of the away-from-it-all charm of this place. Snorkeling in Hansen Bay was the best!
Jay gave us lots of helpful advice, and the cottage was comfortable and nicely decorated.
Thanks again for sharing your little piece of paradise with us.
Amazing views of Hansen Bay from deck. Inside is cozy and tastefully decorated with clean and comfortable furnishings. The beach, which is a short walk away, has calm waters and is great for swimming and snorkeling. The cottage has an adequate a/c but is loud. Internet and phone was reliable. No tv. Movies are available on computer but it would often "freeze up".The steep driveway is a bit of a challenge and takes a day or two to master. All in all it is a pleasant place to stay and a great value.
If you want wild non-stop partying in an electrifying atmosphere then Rebecca's Fancy is NOT for you. If you want a relaxing time away from it all in a Caribbean paradise then look no further. The East End is wonderfully remote with breathtaking vistas, wild donkeys and spectacular beaches to swim, snorkel and scuba dive. My wife and I spent 11 days and loved them all. Jay and Athena are gracious hosts who are happy to share their slice of heaven on earth with you. Coral Bay is a short drive for a variety of restaurants.
My wife and I had a wonderful stay at Rebecca's Fancy. We were looking for a relaxing place to visit paradise and this was a great find. The cottage is next door to the wonderful owner's house. It a 2 minute walk to a beautiful and empty beach with fun snorkeling and swiming. The island is pretty darn small so we would take day trips to visit the other beaches and hotspots. The roads were windy and fun to drive. It is located on the more secluded side of the island and away from the cruise crowds, but easy enough to get to the larger crowds if we wanted. The house was clean and had everything we needed. We rented a car in St. Thomas and brought it over on a ferry without any problem. There were a few tasty and entertaining restaurants within 10 minutes drive
The owner's are warm and welcoming. I would recommend Rebecca's Fancy to anyone trying to get away from the real-world and trying to immerse themselves in paradise.
My husband and I spent five nights at Rebecca's Fancy. It is in pristine condition and stocked with all one might need to spend a week. The proximity to the beach is a rare find on St. John - walking across the street to snorkel is a luxury on an island of mountain homes. The cottage itself is immaculate and lovingly decorated (though they do need a new grill and beach chair). The porch and patio do not have the best views, but you cannot beat the sunset from the front deck.
When deciding whether or not to go, visitors will need to weigh the location (great) with the lack of privacy you experience as a guest on someone's property. This is definitely not a "clothing optional" situation as some other properties can be described. Our previous visit to St. John was at Windwardside Main House--- right next to another small guest house but, because of the heavy vegetation and the fact that the houses are side by side (rather than on top of) each other, we never heard a peep from or saw our neighbors unless we were arriving or departing from the parking lot. Here you have campers on the beach below you and the property owners above you. Both can be heard clearly, and I assume anything we said, or listened to, could also be heard clearly.
Though the East End is considered the back of beyond on the island, we had more noise interference there than Coral Bay or Fish Bay, perhaps because it is more of a neighborhood than vacation area (tree trimming, masonry, housework, etc).
Again, the prospective visitor must weigh their options - the location is magnificent. Jay and Athena are a wonderful and inspiring couple and are very hospitable. I think it's wise to understand when visiting that you will be sharing the property with your owners/hosts. Personally this is not our ideal situation and thus the 3-star review versus a 4.
Scuba, Snorkeling, sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking with great hiking trails, historical ruins explorations.
