Overview

About the property

4 (+ 1) Bedrooms - 3 Baths - (Sleeps 10)

Features: The upper level with its connected great room and dining room, cathedral ceilings and abundance of glass feels much like a luxurious penthouse overlooking the area and both bodies of water – the Atlantic Ocean and Currituck Sound. A small rotation of the home on the large lot during construction directs the view toward the waters and horizons, while blocking out neighboring homes. The feeling is true “Wow! This is different. We’re on Vacation”. Professionally decorated to set you free, no claustrophobic cabin fever from dark paneled wood walls and small windows.

On the same level is a well-designed fully equipped kitchen, a full bath, and an entertainment center with stereo, CD, DVD, cable TV, fastest Internet available, VCR and a video library, books and puzzles. This room adjoins the Great Room through French doors, and can be a fully enclosed bedroom with a closet, drawers, and direct access to a bathroom, like all bedrooms. The sleep sofa was selected especially for its sleeping comfort.

The lower level has 2 full baths and 4 bedrooms (each with direct access to a bathroom). A Master bedroom has a King-sized bed, a private deck and TV with DVD player; the Queen-sized bedroom also has deck access; 2 twin bedrooms each have 2 single beds. All have ceiling fans in addition to central heating and cooling.

Extras: Expansive decks with Currituck Sound and Atlantic Ocean views and cushioned patio furniture; a ship's watch with seating, and a portion of the upper deck is screened. Luxurious wall-to-wall carpeting, heat & air conditioning, and ceiling fans throughout the home. Outside, a rope chair, hammock, outdoor shower, and covered parking. Bed, bath and kitchen linens as well as the cleaning service are provided.

You will want to make the Byrd Sanctuary, in the highly desirable community of Carolina Dunes, your home at the beach. Enjoy the fresh breezes and water views while relaxing on one of the many comfortable decks, or from every room in this spacious, airy, and beautifully decorated vacation home. Cathedral ceilings and large Palladian windows allow as much nature inside as good housekeeping and the weather permits. From this strategic location on top of the dunes, you can see the sun rise over the ocean and set over the Currituck Sound.

Golf, Tennis, Biking, Summer Theatre/park are nearby: Duck's new park and amphitheater is now open. Check the Town of Duck link on my personal website for scheduled performances and group activities - music, stage plays, morning yoga, etc. Many golf courses are located near your new beach home (links to each are included on our personal website - click on link below in Owner Info), as well as indoor and outdoor tennis courts with professional lessons, clinics, and exercise facilities. There are massage and health spas nearby. Safe bike trails have been created from Corolla through Duck, down through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Community streets are also safe for biking, walking, skating and ambling - an ideal beach neighborhood.

Your fully equipped vacation home, owned and maintained by a property management professional of 30+ years, awaits you, in immaculate condition. (Average Customer Review - Five Stars )

Check-in and Checkout: Normally occurs on Sundays after May, to take advantage of reduced traffic (as opposed to Saturdays) in prime season. Your 'door key' will be a 4-digit code unique to your reservation, so no more being locked out when you 'rush back' from the beach, plus check-in is done by e-mail, another customer convenience.

I received a recent guest e-mail with this endorsement, and a suggestion I add a comment to the website:

"Hi, Bryan,

Just a note to let you know I received the return of the security deposit, thank you. We had a wonderful stay and thoroughly enjoyed your place. It was great for our multigenerational gathering and the location was perfect. Close enough to the beach so the walk was no trouble, even loaded down with umbrellas, chairs, and sand toys! But far enough away that we didn't have to worry about the children sneaking out to the beach alone and unnoticed while we were busy. We appreciated having table space for the whole family to dine together, the multiple decks (especially the top one for sunsets and star gazing), and having bedrooms remote from the living space so the adults could enjoy the evenings after the little ones were abed. Except for one trek to Cape Hatteras and one walk on the boardwalk, we just enjoyed going from the house to the beach umbrellas to the water. It was wonderful to have a well outfitted kitchen with lots of space and cookware, ample plates, etc, and the 10 year old even commented on the "really nice silverware!" "

The e-mailer suggested I add these comments for your convenience:

" It would be good to let guests know that, although towels are provided, they need to bring their own beach towels. . . trash bags, hand soap, dish soap, coffee, sugar, salt and pepper."

I hope this helps you plan your grocery store visit.

A few recent messages left in the Guest Book include:

From March:

We’ve so enjoyed our stay_ great location, beach, sound.

Celebrated our grandaughter’s birthday. She said it the “best gift”;

You know we are having a good time when we don’t even know the correct date - today is 4-1.

We chose no TV, radio; lovely.

Take care- good travels to all !

A partial-week guest in April:

“First time to the Outer Banks. We were able to get our family together to spend a memorable and fun Easter. We all loved Duck with its quaint stores, popcorn shop, and friendly people. Saw the Wright Brothers Museum, The Dunes, Lost Colony, Elizabethan Gardens and Aquarium. All were great and fun things to do. It was generally cloudy and very windy, with temps in the 50’s, but everyone had a great time. The accommodations were wonderful and we would stay here again. The home was clean and the furnishings were bright, cheery, and comfortable for nine of us, which included ourselves and our daughters, son-in-law and grandchildren. We left on Monday for our trip home to PA. (J&M)

From May guests:

Hey Bryan, We really enjoyed a beautiful week @ Byrd Sanctuary. What a lovely and beautifully maintained home. Great time catching up with your sister. What a special person. Second time here, and we hope to be back soon. (R&S)

Dear Bryan: We had a beautiful week with our friends here. Best weather we have experienced here over the years. Love Colington Café and Red Sky restaurants. Excellent food! Art’s Place has gone downhill. Byrd Sanctuary, however, is still standing TALL! Thanks for sharing. (W&G)

Bryan, Thanks for keeping the house so nice; we love our home away from home. The weather was perfect all week. Relaxing fun in the sun. Thanks for sharing your home. (The K’s)

Bryan – Thanks again – Our home away from home was perfect again. Few thunderstroms over night but weather was great every day. Tried some new restaurants – favorite was The Tail of The Whale – great food, great service.

Thanks again,

Bryan: Very very nice home. Thanks for letting us visit. Must say the house was spotless – passed this Marine’s inspection. Great view. Very nice area – quiet and close to water. (The T’s)

From June guests:

(Long list of people and towns.) Our third year. We love this place !! Great open kitchen, living space! Great decks and outdoor shower and a fantastic beach !!

See you next year !

Bryan – Thanks again for an awesome stay in Byrd Sanctuary ! The widow’s walk, deck & hammock continue to be my favorite places in the house. The views and the beach rock ! Thanks so much!

Jennifer & Crew

The Sxxxx family visited from West Bloomfield, MI – We had a wonderful, much needed, week of beach and sun and fun. The house was perfect for us – all the beds were comfortable and the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed! We cooked every night and loved the kitchen! We spent hours on the porch, and hours on the beach! Thank you so much for a fabulous vacation home – I hope to be back again next summer. “Perfect Weather” “Perfect Vacation Home.”

Bryan – We have yet again had a fabulous vacation at Byrd Sanctuary. This year we particularly needed a long rest after moving from the rectory, our 42–year home to a new place – truly exhausting. Thank you also for all the arduous detailing you did this year at the Sanctuary. I continue to treasure the fabulous amount of natural light that pours into the main upstairs room. The hammock I think is my forever favorite.

Blessing always, M.

Thank you for an unforgettable stay in you beautiful home. This was our first visit to OBX. We had many wonderful adventures and terrific beach days.

This has been a true blessing!

Nathaniel, Angela, Joshua, Gabriel & Elizabeth (Clinton Corners, N.Y.)

As mentioned, complete guest comments are available at the link below in Owner Info., but here are the October and November comments surrounding what I considered an unfair review by a 2014 October guest:

October

'What a wonderful week we have had!!The first three nights we had 3 college friends and 3 husbands. On Wednesday we sent the guys home and 3 more “girls” arrived!! (Everyone over fifty.) This was the perfect house for all of us! Many thanks for sharing your beautiful home with the “Radford Ladies”!!!

Bryan – As always, thanks for a great stay at the Byrd Sanctuary. This time we had Jeff’s mom here from Dunedin, New Zealand – it’s the first time she’s ever seen the NC coast and she loved it – from Corolla to Hatteras and of course much time in Duck!! Thanks again - (J & crew)

November

Beach girls!!! We returned to this lovely abode. What a fab house to celebrate 28 years of cherished friendshi

What makes this house unique

Created for your benefit. Pleasing features abound.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We hate to leave tomorrow! We love the house – so well furnished and equipped. I think October is perfect, hardly any traffic and so peaceful. We needed a good rest. Our favorite restaurants are the Blue Point Grille, & Colington Café. Great food. We enjoyed the walk into Duck and the beach. We drove down to Rodanthe to see the “Nights in Rodanthe” house. People were so nice. The wild ponies of Corolla aren’t very wild but the beach is gorgeous. Don’t miss the Wright Bros. Nat. Park in Kitty Hawk. Best of all for a bird watcher was the Pea Island Nature preserve. Beautiful birds and scenery. Forgot to mention – saw two red foxes come through the yards on Widgeon Drive. Life is good. ? Lynchburg, VA

John called later and said "The home was truly five stars. Perfect."

Very clean, comfortable and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. We really liked the layout of the home and especially that the entertainment center was in a separate room away from the main area. The house was very clean and comfortable and the kitchen well-stocked. Bryan, the owner, was a pleasure to rent through. This house is within easy walking distance to the beach, where we spent most of our afternoons. Thank you again for a wonderful experience!

Very nice although not recently upgraded - but we would still return!

  • 4 of 5

A vacation home that really has it all...... The home is in a nice neighborhood very close to the beach. We walked there every day with all our beach equipment. Beach is absolutely magnificent and pretty private. We rode bikes to the middle of Duck - so very easy access to town. The home itself was a good layout - with enough rooms to relax and get away from others - but also nice gathering space. It was fitted out with all necessary items for cooking etc. Appliances are fine but not modern. The downside observation is that many details of the set-up inside and out need to be upgraded; it is clear you are not staying in a home that has recent TLC. We don't give it 5 stars for that reason. The other concern is that the houses are fairly close together. We are a relatively laid back family, and it was off season, but if it was the height of the season and either of the two closest neighbors had loud parties or loud children it could get pretty distracting. Finally, although the cleaning services did not return our call when we needed something (and they advertise that they will respond ANY TIME) we felt very well taken care of by the landlord - Bryan - who was good to work with before and throughout our stay.

Owner's Response: The above review is actually quite good, a five-star write-up with a four-star rating, and I thank the reviewer. Reviews are not easy or quick to write, so the reviewer must care about the home and other guests, the type of folks I hope will return. When we left the home on March 16 to accommodate returning guests, the home was in top shape, TLC had to be abundant. When we returned on April 23 to accept shipment of a new sofa bed, like the reviewer, we didn’t see all the TLC we thought had been left lying around. Six groups had been able to “vacation” during that brief time, during which a cord broke in one set of vertical blinds and it was tied up in an unattractive bundle. Also, a 1 ½ year-old microwave stopped working, and several screens were torn loose. That would lead me to also suspect an absence of TLC, but we don’t get TLC from all guests, and some things will and did break that are beyond the control of any guest. By the end of our week there, several sets of blinds had been restrung (to get ahead of imminent problems), and a new sofa and microwave were in place. All screens were repaired, and we did more deck staining in our endeavor to maintain a splinter-free outdoor environment. We also finished development of a large beach cart, able to carry beach apparatus and several small kids, though it’s not DOT-approved for people. Duck is “renourishing” the beaches in May and June, 2017, and if a family has to use the next closest beach access, with this cart they won’t have to carry the chairs, coolers, etc., that extra 50–100 yds. Most of the appliances are modern. The stove is still there because it works. Refrigerator, dishwasher, blender, coffeemaker and microwave are under two years old. Everything else is under five years. Deck cushions and inside wicker cushions are constantly replaced, every three – four years. We even replaced all door knobs this year. I cannot affect the noise of my neighbors, and vice versa. But few homes are as beautifully situated as the Byrd Sanctuary, sitting on a dune overlooking the ocean and the Currituck Sound. Neighbors tell me I have the best maintained house with the best views around. And guests add “the best deck furniture ever.” We try. But we cannot be sure which guests will maintain or neglect the home. We will continue to strive to meet and exceed the needs and desires of our guests, and appreciate any communications, whether or not specific attention is required. Bryan Byrd

Very clean and well maintained. Had everything we needed. Close to beach and the sound.

We had a great time. Weather was great. We stayed for 3 days and it was a great fit for our family. We cooked for dinner each night and had everything we needed in the kitchen. Great views from the decks when eating dinner. Like James Taylor said "up on the roof you can let your care go ". The quiet and breeze up there is quite refreshing.

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent stay and would highly recommend the Byrd Sanctuary as home base at the OBX. The listing is accurate with excellent photos of the bright and airy spaces on the upper level. We found the house to be clean and well-maintained. The kitchen, which was stocked with everything we needed, is large enough for several people to be working at once and opens to a large dining table and living area. We enjoyed meals at the house rather than going out. The decks with comfortable seating were shaded in the afternoon, lovely breeze for happy hour, and provided a view toward the ocean. The house is very comfortable for up to 10 people and it is nice to have 3 full baths! There are books and movies to choose from and a card table for jigsaw puzzles (some provided or bring your own).

We really enjoyed stargazing and watching distant storms from the widow’s walk after dark. The outdoor shower and hammock are exceptionally nice. Plenty of parking and storage areas for bikes and beach gear.

The home’s location is within a very easy walk to the beach access path and the beach was not crowded. Bring your bikes! We loved the paths that took off from Widgeon and ran far south, all the way through Duck and beyond (a lot of it shaded so even in 100+ heat we enjoyed the ride). Duck has a nice boardwalk and park to explore, along with lots of shops and restaurants. We also rode north to Corolla and explored the lighthouse and the Whalehead Club. There is too much to do for just one week .

Great house, great host, great views! If I were a cat, I'd purr...

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at Byrd Sanctuary multiple times now and adore it! Great location -- easy walk to beach, awesome sound and beach views from deck and widow's walk. Well maintained and comfortable -- it's like having a home away from home -- everything you need (we always eat in -- the kitchen is well equipped)! Wonderful host -- Bryan is so witty and easy to work with that it makes renting this home a pleasure. The best thing I can probably say about it is that Byrd Sanctuary is truly a sanctuary where you can retreat from the hustle of everyday life (and the nearby more crowded OBX) and experience utter relaxation. Bring a book (or 3), tasty beverages, and a swimsuit, and you're good to go...As always, thanks Bryan!!!

Being situated between and with a view of the ocean and the Currituck Sound provides outstanding opportunities for a variety of water sports as well as beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Whether by bike, foot or car, you are just minutes from specialty shops and gourmet restaurants in the quaint village of Duck. The new Duck town park and amphitheater are complete and in full swing, with jazz festivals, theater performances and children's programs. Also, yoga-on-the-green, and other activities are scheduled throughout the week. Don't miss the new boardwalk, especially for sunset and nature strolls on the Currituck Sound.

Nearby are golf courses, indoor and outdoor racket sport facilities, health spas, miniature golf, and lighthouses of the Outer Banks. Safe bike trails now stretch over the entire length of the Outer Banks. Bike right from the home. You may also enjoy visiting the home of the Wright Brother's first flight, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the bird watching sites in sanctuaries used by winged migrants traversing the Atlantic flyway.
