This place is awesome

Went over thanksgiving weekend. Cooked nice dinners in a fully equipped kitchen. Went hiking on the mountain behind the house. The house was large and we had plenty of space. Hung out in the study playing games or in the living room. The backyard was amazing too used the fire pit. Would highly recommend coming here for a weekend get away.

Cozy and comfortable in the Catskills!

  • 5 of 5

Family of 4 stayed here for 2 nights in August. Very convenient to lots of hiking trails and the town of Boiceville where we could buy groceries. Overall the house was clean and fully ready for us when we arrived. Barbara was kind enough to let us "stage" our stuff and bikes before actual check-in time so we could get our groceries in the refrigerator, etc. I was at first concerned because I had read one of the previous reviews in which the reviewer gave a "warning" to future renters. I decided to call the owner ahead of time to get her perspective and after discussing our concerns and her explanation of what had happened - we decided to continue with the plan to rent and I'm glad we did. Everything was wonderful, beds were comfortable and overall home was clean. We hiked during the day and spent both nights at the house - making dinner, spending time around the fire pit and playing cards. Overall a great weekend and I think a good value compared to other homes in the area.

A wonderfully relaxing week on a beautiful property.

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse had so much character, and supplied everything we needed. The grounds were gorgeous to walk around and the deck provided a nice outdoor space to grill. We had 3 adults and two teens and the space was sufficient for sleeping and privacy. There was a small selection of movies and a large selection of magazines and books. I could've sat on the porch and read the entire 4 days and been quite happy with the view and material. The water pressure was strong in the showers. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Renters Beware

Vacation Property Renters Beware!

Let this review serve as a warning to anyone contemplating renting this property; you will be sorry if you do. We recently had intentions to rent the property for a long weekend getaway, but when we arrived late on a Thursday afternoon with our four year old daughter, after a two hour journey from our home, we encountered the disgusting mess left by the previous tenants. The house had not been cleaned! Dirty sheets on the beds, dirty towels on the bathroom floor, clumps of hair in the bathtub and dirty dishes in the sink are just a few examples of what we observed. Further inspection of the house revealed to us that it’s condition was nowhere near what it appeared to be in the VRBO website photos. It was obvious to us that the property is not properly maintained. Furthermore, the photos on the property web site were taken at advantageous angles that mislead one into believing that the property is on an idyllic site, and in a quiet and private setting, when in fact the house is only a few steps from the road. The written description of the site is misleading as well and fails to mention that the vast majority of the property’s seven acres is a virtually inaccessible hillside, with sheer rockcliff. Shortly after our arrival, we called the property owner, who suggested that we go have dinner somewhere and return after the house was cleaned. This was not acceptable to us as it was clear that it would take several hours if not days to bring the house into the condition portrayed on the web site. We declined Barbara’s offer and she advised that we would receive a full refund. Now, on a Thursday evening, we had to find other accommodations for the weekend! A review of our credit card transactions several days later revealed that only a portion of our payment was credited to our account. Barbara had failed to ‘cancel’ the reservation so $205 in fees were not refunded. And that is not all… After a lengthy discussion with a representative from HomeAway, we learned that Barbara had changed our e-mail address on the HomeAway listing records for the reservation, which meant that we could not leave a review (That explains why there are only stellar 5 star reviews of the property!). Thankfully HomeAway took care of that situation and we were able to post this review. We have had great VRBO experiences in the past, this was the exception.

Amazing trip to Barbara's historic cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Ok, the very first sound that greeted us was of hermit thrushes singing from the beautiful rock cliffs surrounding the house. A light fog had settled across the yard, which made the spring green glow and the little house look so inviting. Her rhododendrons are gorgeous and were a familiar touch of home, having driven 13 hours from the NC mountains.

What a blessed week the Lord gave. We hiked to Kaaterskill Falls, Plattekill Falls, High Falls in Philmont, Artist's Falls and Bash Bish Falls. Loved the country drives (all the stone homes are especially different for us and just lovely) and shopping/poking around in Rhinebeck. Lunch at Terrapin was delicious. Vanderbilt's house is under Reno right now but the Hudson views from the grounds are gorgeous and worth a stop. Loved the Ashokan reservoir so much and never got tired of crossing it over and over. LOL. Barbara is just a wonderful hostess and her cabin is so comfortable. That hot shower felt fantastic after those rainy hikes. Such a great stay. Thank you so much!
