SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN IN SOUTHWEST FRANCE - Come to 'CHEZ MACKENZIE' our charming cottage and private swimming pool ideal for 2-4 people deep in the countryside only 10 minutes from St.Antonin-noble-val. Relax by the pool, go and explore the historical bastide towns and savour the delights of the local markets! We also have 4 bicycles that you can use to explore the area and local maps to discover the many hiking trails.

Long weekend? Toulouse/Blagnac airport is about 70 kms - 1 hour 15mins away!

Ideal for 2 to 4 people, our recently restored, tastefully decorated, 2 bedroomed vacation cottage and swimming pool is situated in a small hamlet in the depths of the French countryside about 10 minutes drive from the pretty town of St.Antonin-Noble-Val - 82140 and the beautiful little village of Penne du Tarn - 81140. Cordes-sur-Ciel is about 20 minutes drive.


Downstairs is an open plan kitchen, dining area and living room, light and airy with the three French windows giving access to the swimming pool, the front courtyard and the ‘inside/outside’ room. The whole house is very well insulated and for those cooler days in spring and autumn, there is a cosy wood burning stove downstairs that keeps the whole house beautifully warm!

Upstairs are two bedrooms and one bathroom. Bedroom 1 has 2 single beds (which could be pushed together for an extra large double). Bedroom 2 has a large double bed and French windows that open onto the large upstairs balcony which overlooks the garden and swimming pool areas (great for star gazing at night). I decided on a white and black décor for the bedrooms - light, modern and fun to sleep in!


The pool, the sun deck, the outdoor 'rooms' - for swimming, relaxing , reading, barbecue, eating, playing - or whatever - YOU ARE ON HOLIDAY!

The swimming pool is 4m x 8m with wide shallow Roman steps which are ideal for young children and less sporty types who feel toe dipping is enough and sun worshipping on one of the chic black loungers is more to their liking. Yes, the sun deck is expansive and the parasols are on wheels, so you can move around and follow the sun or find some shade.

Between the house and the pool is the rear terrace with dining table, chairs and barbecue for al fresco eating and comfortable outdoor chairs for reading and relaxing.

On the other side of the cottage is the walled front courtyard. A very pleasant area to sit and relax.

From the courtyard you can go though the big wooden red doors and explore the HAMLET of FABRE DE LAGRANGE. Go and say bonjour to the chickens across the path, walk to the end of the hamlet and perhaps take a walk along the marked pathway which can take you to the village of PENNE if you feel up to it, otherwise just take a stroll to take in the magnificent views over the Forest of the Gresigne and the Château de Penne.

The cottage is situated at the far end of our large main house, so is semi-detached with your own private entrance. Martin and I live at the other end and are happy to help with any additional information about the cottage and things to do and places to visit when out and about in this area of South West France. Most of the time, we will be in our little studio at the end of the garden where we make deluxe photo frames that we sell all over the world via our Etsy internet shop. You are very welcome to take the short walk up the garden and come and visit us in our framing studio - you might find some frames to take home!

About Denise & Martin Mackenzie

Martin & Denise Mackenzie along with their daughter Rosalie have lived in this lovely area of South West France since 1992.They have an online picture and photo frame making business selling their 'Mackenzieframes' worldwide, whilst continuing the renovation of their old stone property at Fabre.

Why Denise & Martin Mackenzie chose Penne

At the start of the renovation, most of the property was derelict, and the 'cottage' was just four walls rising from the stone debris, all overgrown with bramble and aspen. There was no roof. Initially, we hadn't intended to renovate this part, merely clean-up the area for use as an outside terrace. But the leaning stone walls proved very unstable and needed to be secured. One thing led to another, and 8 years on, we have a 'new' property.

Very well equipped and comfortable with plenty of space. Great having English TV for lazy moments.

We enjoyed the seclusion, watching butterflies and birds, enjoyed the immaculate pool and surrounding lounge area. Denise and Martin made us very welcome and were on hand to provide help and information if needed, but kept their distance too. We enjoyed using the complimentary bikes in the surrounding hilly countryside! Sunday market in St. Antonin Noble Val was excellent for provisions at the start of our week. Would highly recommend to those seeking an out of town location with a very well equipped house.

The property is as described, set in a lovely rural area.

The property is lovely, well maintained and clean. Although rural, it is still within reach of the many stunningly beautiful hilltop villages, chateaux and castles in the dramatic Aveyron gorge.

We did not make use of the bicycles provided as I have had knee operations, but appreciate that the surrounding are perfect for biking or walking. The owners, Denise and Martin were friendly and helpful, but not intruding.

Absolutely delightful !

We had the pleasure of staying in this home for one week the end of September and beginning of October .It was everything we expected . Very clean , stocked with all things necsarry to cook with and to serve meals . bedrooms and bath great . LOVELY OUTDOOR SITTING AREAS both inside the home and outside around the pool . Appliances new , grounds lovely , pool immaculate but cool due to season.

The location may seem a tad rural but we found it to be perfect , quiet and peaceful but still close to drive approximately 10 to 15 minutes to surrounding villages etc .

The hosts Denise and Martin were friendly and helpful at all times

We would highly recommend this property !

Very Comfortable Gite

The gite was very comfortable and in a very quiet location. There was plenty of room for 4 people although we were only 2. It was clean and well equipped. The swimming pool was a bonus and owners were friendly as they live next door.

Beautiful place for a peaceful holiday

We have just returned from a fabulous 2 week stay at Denise and Martin's amazing property. The pictures don't do it justice, the love and care that has been shown whilst being restored shows throughout the property. Everything is good quality and beautifully presented. The swimming pool and surrounding area is a great sun trap plus there are plenty of lovely areas to sit if you want to stay out of the sun. We cannot recommend this property highly enough and really hope to return next year.

The location was wonderful and the property was even more beautiful and bigger, than it looks in the photos! Martin and Denise, the owners, are such a lovely couple, helpful and friendly, I would recommend a holiday here to friends and family!

CANOEING and KAYAKING is very popular on the river Aveyron - there are may places in St Antonin-Noble-Val where you can hire them.

WALKING and CYCLING. There are many varied and well-marked paths for ramblers to enjoy - the tourist Information centers have books and maps of all these routes. We have left some local maps and guides in the cottage for you to use. Cyclists are very welcome - plenty of places to park your bikes after a long day in the saddle exploring all the great marked cycling ways both on and off road. We have 4 VTT bicycles and 4 helmets here at the house that you are welcome to use in the local area.

The Bastides or fortified hill-top villages such as Cordes-sur-Ciel, Bruniquel, Castelnau-Montmiral, Puycelci and Penne du Tarn are well worth a visit. This area formed the northern part of the Cathar region during the Albigensian Crusades, and its history makes fascinating reading.

The Local outdoor markets are wonderful places to buy your fresh local vegetables, cheese and wine, then sitting down at one of the numerous cafes for a much needed coffee or 'pression' (beer). Our nearest markets are St. Antonin-Noble-Val on Sunday mornings, Caussade on Mondays, and Gaillac on Fridays.

And what about the LOCAL WINE? A 15 minute drive south from Fabre towards Albi or Gaillac and you’re in the heart of the GAILLAC vineyards. Most are small independent ‘domains’ and are open for visitors to taste and buy these fine wines. We particularly like the reds, and for summer there is a light slightly fizzy white wine called Perlé - delicious served chilled on hot summer evenings! You will also find local champenoise, white and rosé wines made in the Gaillac region.

Restaurants - there are many in the area serving mainly traditional French cuisine.

Flea markets/garage sales/antiques fairs are known as vides greniers/brocantes here in France. Many of the villages and towns have at least one sale during the summer months and we go to as many as possible, so if you are interested let us know and we’ll pass on the details.

Music and street theatre festivals are a plenty. The best is at VAOUR - Eté de Vaour - the first week in August.
