Classic, restored cottage with panoramic views on main channel of Mississippi. Next to National Scenic Byway in area ranked Number One for exploring Upper Mississippi. Excellent central location between Madison/Milwaukee and Twin Cities. Cottage is 10 miles from downtown La Crosse in small rivertown of Dakota MN.
1920's cottage is on a quiet road fronting open, moving water. Cottage looks out on SKY & WATER. Railroad and highway proximity are not a problem here as they are at many area Mississippi River locations. The quiet road is not a main highway. Tracks are unobtrusive--blocked by small boat landing, fence and road. Cottage sits on private knoll. Eastern windows (all the sitting/living areas) view sky and water--no buildings and no view obstructions. North & South, cottage is surrounded by trees/mature privacy hedge. Garage/fence border back yard. Guests enjoy sitting/dining/cooking/outdoors, overlooking the river.
Rosy morning sunrises, moonlight on the water, and walks along the panoramic road are loved by guests, many of whom return every season. The Guest Book is filled with tributes from ten years of satisfied guests. (The cottage reserves far in advance May through September.)
Furnishings are attractive & comfortable. Large new kitchen (stocked well for cooking) and dining area open to a brick patio. Queen bed in one bedroom; double in 2d bedroom; twin in sunroom. Daybed size couch in livingroom. Living areas are spacious. While cottage can accommodate larger groups, it is best for one to four guests.
A stroll across the quiet road takes you to the confluence of the Dakota and the Mississippi Rivers and a small boat landing. Two miles down the road is a larger boat landing and white sandy beach with blue, clear water. It is worth a stay to watch the sky, light, water, eagles and tundra swans. Close access to numerous fishing/boat rental marinas.
Extensive WI/MN trails & parks nearby. Located close to the scenic Great River Road Wine Trail. Great dining & antiquing on the National Scenic Byway. Eagles gather on area of River framed by the sunroom window. Many boat/bike/kayak rental places nearby. Cable TV and highspeed internet.

My vocation is law, but my avocation is real estate and creating inviting homes in peaceful settings. I discovered the cottage on a Sunday drive, loved the location, and acquired it to enjoy the majestic Mississippi River--in a private setting that is only 10 miles from La Crosse. As friends visited and asked to use it, the cottage became a popular rental.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2006
Dakota has wide open views along the Mississippi. I purchased the cottage for my own use because of views/setting. The location is simply tranquil and peaceful--the light magical. You have complete privacy but are close to things you want to do.
Walking along the River (even at night, under the moon); the light of the morning sunrise; daytrips on Great River Road; grilling and dining on the patio while watching the River; entertaining in the lovely kitchen all year around. Watching the River and movies at the same time. The architecture and furnishings of the cottage. Beautiful flowers, fall colors, birds. No intrusive neighbors.
Swan watching was a success. We had a great time here. Looked in your guest book and found out that my sister and husband stayed here! A Family House here on the River--full of lightness and laughter. A very good place.
So many details are seen to in this lovely cottage. The views of the Mississippi, a lot of room to spread out. There was even room to invite additional family from Onalaska come for a cookout. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here.
I have never stayed at this cottage but I know exactly where it's located along the beautiful Mississippi River. I've read all the reviews, viewed the photos and I would say this place is a hidden gem for vacationers. I was born and raised in La Crosse, now live in Onalaska, Wisconsin and literally about a 20 minute drive away but I would seriously consider renting this for a romantic couples weekend away with my husband. The place looks beautiful and the rates are fantastic! I'd rather stay here than in a hotel if I were coming to the La Crosse area!
The perfect setting! This little (but not too little) cottage had everything we needed...plenty of space to sprawl out to catch up on reading, listening to music, using the newly-installed Wi-Fi, enjoying the gorgeous river scenery and wildlife. The owner has decorated the entire home in tasteful, interesting décor & antiques, and has it stocked with everything needed to cook and enjoy meals as if you're right at home! We even entertained family who live nearby for brunch and only had to think about what food to buy, because everything else is already provided. The cottage is well-maintained and cozy...an added plus was that we could bring our dog, who enjoyed looking out over the river from the full-view sunroom!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this Minnesota cottage and highly recommend it! It is located in the small town of Dakota which is just 10 minutes or less to La Crosse and other nearby towns. This allowed us to enjoy the peace and quiet of the river while still being close to amenities that we wanted in the larger city. The owner was friendly and easy to work with. We had no communication problems before or during our stay.
The VRBO pictures accurately depict the cottage furnishings. It is obvious that a lot of thought has been put into both the styling and stocking of the cottage - everything we needed or wanted was there. The kitchen cabinets are full, linens are provided, the washer/dryer was useful, the A/C & ceiling fans kept us cool, and the grill and fire ring added to our fun. Everything was clean and well-kept.
The neighbors and an auto repair shop are very close. There is a hedge and other trees/shrubs that mostly maintained the peace and quiet as well as our privacy. There was very little traffic on the nearby road. The train tracks were a little busier than we anticipated but our 3yo and 6yo loved watching the trains so we quickly got used to the train noises. Inside the house, all noise is muted. I'm sharing this information because it is something you can't tell from the VRBO pictures and the description, but this should not deter you from considering this cottage.
As advertised, the view is outstanding and completely unobstructed so sit back and enjoy it but also take time to enjoy the activities in the area. We would highly recommend the Mississippi Explorer Cruises, hiking in the state parks, and Myrick Park. Excellent food options include Buzzard Billy's, Big Al's, Fayze's and the Pearl Ice Cream Parlor. Lots of fun shopping in downtown La Crosse including Cheddarheads and Pearl Street Books.
If we are ever back in this area, we'll definitely be staying again.
This was our first experience with a VRBO property and an excellent one it was! This cottage is charming, clean, full of modern amenities and the owner was very responsive to inquiries. Would definitely recommend to friends and family. Thank you Amy!

One word description - awesome! We were looking for a place to stay for a week of golfing...found this fantastic cottage on vrbo.com. The cottage was like a home away from home. It was so peaceful sitting at the table eating breakfast and lunch while enjoying the glorious view of the Mississippi River.
This property was very clean and well maintained. The owner was fantastic to work with. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for just about any type of get away or vacation.
