We offer a PRIVATE, EN SUITE apartment with a lovely COURTYARD AND GARDEN in San Miguel de Allende! Our house is located in a Mexican neighborhood and while there are English speaking neighbors nearby all of our immediate neighbors are Spanish speaking.
THE APARTMENT has spacious rooms that open to a private, stone courtyard that includes a fish pond! It is located on the first floor which is above the ground floor and is accessed via a flight of stairs.
THE LIVING ROOM: The living room is artistically and tastefully decorated in the San Miguel style. The furnishings are comfortable and stylish. There are pieces of various styles from the local area. The living room is large and bathed in sunlight. The dining area sits up to 6 for large meals with family and friend.
There is a flatscreen TV with cable channels some of which are in English. There is also a DVD player and a Roku device with Netflix.
THE KITCHEN: The kitchen is nicely equipped with hand made Mexican tile! (The owner is a chef and knows what you need for a good home cooked meal)! There is a coffee maker, electric tea kettle, gas range, microwave and toaster provided.
THE BATH: The bathroom is large! It includes full walk in shower with Mexican tile plus double sinks in a separate room. (There is no tub.) A hair dryer is provided
THE BEDROOM: The bedroom is large and lovely. It has soft light filtering in and is PERFECT for sleeping! The bed headboard was HAND MADE of wrought iron crafted by a local artisan! We leave extra heaters, down comforters and electric mattress pads in case of chilly nights which will occur during the winter months.
THE OFFICE: There is a extra room off the bedroom that can be used as a sleeping space for a child, an office or walk-in closet! There is also a cot for a child or young adolescent.
2ND BEDROOM: There may be a second bedroom with en suite bath available to rent. Contact us for availability. Cost is $20 per night. Call (541) 683-7779 to check availability.
All of the rooms have their own entrance from the patio in the true Mexican style and are all secure with their own locks.
From the second floor there is access to the large roof terrace and it's WONDERFUL VIEWS of the city and the nearby mountains. Sunsets from the roof terrace are often spectacular. The downstairs apartment has open access to the roof.
THE COURTYARD: FANTASTIC!! Large, lush, comfortable and easily accessible from all areas of the house. Sit, read, sleep, dream.... Your oasis awaits!
THE NEIGHBORHOOD: 1.4 km or .87 mi to the center of town (El Jardin), or a short taxi ride. We are located southeast of El Jardin in Colonia Caracol which is up a fairly gentle hill from the town center.
There is a large gourmet grocery, lots of fruit stands, tons of restaurants, bakery and everything you want or need within walking distance!
GREEN!! Casa Roja is equipped with a water purification system throughout the entire house. Hot water is supplied by a solar hot water system with a gas water heater as backup. Also, the water system is pressurized. We recycle glass, plastic, metal paper and cardboard.
A washer and dryer is provided for guests. All bedding and towels are provided.

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE RENTING: 1) the neighborhood is MEXICAN. It can be noisy at times especially fiestas. There may be music and fire works. Also, Mexicans stay up late. There will often be adults and children out talking and laughing til midnight. 2) San Miguel is at an ELEVATION of 6,400 feet. 3) Our house is UP A HILL – not a really big hill, but still a hill. For a very flat walk to the center of town consider renting in Colonia Guadalupe. 4) In March, April and May we can have a lot of WIND and DUST. 5) Cleaning is provided ONCE a WEEK which includes a change of towels and sheets. Extra cleaning can be arranged at an additional cost. 6) TOILET PAPER goes into a small bucket next to the toilet. Our town's sewage treatment system is not up to USA standards. 7) Taxis drive by the house frequently (usually).

We are a retired couple from Eugene, Oregon. We've been spending winters in San Miguel for the last 8 years and look forward to sharing our knowledge of the area with quests who visit San Miguel. Jane was a prolific artist of mosaic works that have been featured around the country over the last 10 years and was a counselor in a prior life. Paul worked for a manufacturer in Eugene and was their controller for almost 10 years.

Awesome casita for a San Miguel visit
How can I word this, without someone new booking this great place and taking any future plans of us visiting? We spent four weeks here last year and about five weeks here this year. Adding more each year. You couldn’t ask for better hosts than Paul and Jane. Friendly, personable, accommodating, humorous, very helpful......need I go on? As an added bonus, there’s Roddy - the cute laid back dog. You’ve got a fully equipped kitchen, a dining room, living area (with TV and Netflix), comfortable bed with heating pad, propane heaters in both the bedroom and living room, nice shower/bathroom and even a second bedroom/bath for additional guests (for a small additional fee). Walking distance to anything you need; grocery stores, bakeries, tons of restaurants, El Centro and fruit and vegetable markets.

With each passing year there are more and more food shopping and restaurant opportunities closer to our house which makes visiting all the more fun. AWESOME place to stay in San Miguel de Allende
My wife and I just spent 32 days at Casa Roja. We couldn't imagine staying anywhere in San Miguel other than with Paul and Jane and their cute dog Roddy. The accommodations were absolutely perfect for our needs. Located at the top of a hill, Casa Roja is a beautiful home with a great apartment in a perfect location to take a short walk to the Jardin, many restaurants, fruit/vegetable shops, and the many mercados scattered around the city. The rooftop patio is great for enjoying a good book, a glass of wine and a beautiful view of the city. If you trek downhill to town, it's somewhat of a hike back to the house, but for us it was great because with all the excellent food we consumed we needed the exercise of walking the hills back to the house. If you're not into walking, there are taxis that come by on a regular basis. What more can I say? AWESOME! Paul and Jane were excellent hosts. They were very helpful with anything we needed and had answers for our many questions about the city. Can't wait to return!
Beautiful home and hosts!
My month long stay at La Casa Roja was very lovely and very comfortable. The apartment is beautiful, well appointed, and quite spacious. You will find everything you need for cooking and entertaining. There are wonderful windows with good lighting and airflow. The bed was comfortable with a huge walk in closet that is ideal for longer stays. The shower is great too with excellent water pressure. The courtyard and roof top terrace are gorgeous. Everything is beautifully decorated with the owners original artwork, fabulous mosaics. I loved the location too and found the walk into the town center and back a nice little workout, with a lot of interesting people and places to see along the way. I made new friends every single day. The best feature however were the hosts, Paul and Jane. They were there for every question I had and took great care to help me with whatever I needed. They are super gracious people. La Casa Roja would for sure be my first choice on any visit back to the area.
TIPS FOR ENJOYING THIS MARVELOUS APARTMENT
Although we spent only six nights in the apartment, we found nothing that we would disagree with in the glowing reviews here. It TRULY is a very special, comfortable, and tastefully decorated apartment. The photos accurately represent the beautiful decor. Paul and Jane are gracious hosts and answered our many questions about San Miguel.
LOCATION. La Casa Roja is on one corner at the busy juncture of five streets (although nighttime noise was not a problem). The most important of those are Calle Cinco de Mayo and Calle Aldama. When you stand at the kitchen sink and look out the window, you are looking west down Calle Cinco de Mayo toward Ruta (“Route”) 51 (also known as “Salida a Celaya”), which leads north into the center of San Miguel. It is a 10-minute walk down to Ruta 51, but a 15- or 20-minute hike back up to La Casa Roja.
TAXIS. Taxis are constantly passing the house, so you don’t need to telephone for one. To instruct a taxi driver to reach La Casa Roja, tell him to go to the intersection where the house is located: “la esquina de Cinco de Mayo y La Calle Aldama.” (If you don’t speak Spanish, just write it out.) That will put you within about 80 feet of the house. It would be helpful if Paul & Jane provided guests with printed cards showing that instruction in Spanish.
GROCERIES. There are several small produce shops on Cinco de Mayo between the house and Ruta 51. At the corner of Cinco de Mayo and Ruta 51, there is a shop which sells roasted chickens. If you are a “short-time” guest as we were, it’s most convenient to do your grocery shopping at the Mega (“MAY-gaw”), which is similar to a Walmart. All taxi drivers recognize its name. Two products which we especially liked were bacon labeled “FUD Tocino Ahumado” and whole bean coffee labeled “Café Garat Espresso” (in a black bag with silver lettering).
KITCHEN. The kitchen is quite well equipped for light cooking, all that most guests would want to do. Our only disappointment was the lack of good, sharp knives. The paring knife and butcher knife were both dull, the result of being stored amongst other utensils. So we used the bread knife for slicing tomatoes, etc. A small knife block would solve that problem. The clear plastic bowl on top of the coffee mill not only holds the beans to be ground, but actually serves as the on/off switch as well. Make sure it’s well seated and twist to turn the mill on or off.
EATING OUT. Many restaurants are scattered along Ruta 51 near the intersection with C
We've added a knife sharpener to the kitchen utensils to help with the knife sharpening and we'll check the knives before each guest arrives.
Walking times are always tricky. They heavily depend on the walking ability of the individual. Age can be a factor as can sensitivity to the altitude here which is about 6,400 feet. The hill that is Cinco de Mayo is steeper than the road into the historic center of town - that is a more gentle slope.
As of this writing (March 2014) a taxi cab from our house to the center of town is 30 pesos. Many folks will walk into town and then cab back especially if they are carrying packages.
Expectations Met & Exceeded
We have just about completed a 3 month stay at La Casa Roja.
Have loved our Mexican experience! Totally enjoyed Paul & Jane, our hosts, who did much to enhance the overall enjoyment of the trip. Love San Miguel and the Mexican people! Glad to be living in a true Mexican/Gringo neighborhood. Have no complaints about the lodging accommodations. All expectations met and exceeded.
Will be returning again next year... as will all our friends who visited with us during this stay.
Winter in San Miguel
My husband and I spent two great months at Casa Roja this year and found it to be a lovely and very comfortable place to stay. When we arrived we found a lovely bouquet of flowers on the table and a copy of the English newspaper Attencion listing activities in the town. The owners, Jane and Paul, were most welcoming and extremely helpful in acquainting us with the town, places to shop, restaurants, etc. The first day Paul drove us to the grocery store so we could stock up on staples and then to his favorite bakery. Jane and Paul were always available to answer our questions or visit. We shared large bags of oranges, DVDs, and a couple of enjoyable dinners on the town.
The apartment was well taken care of and it had lovely mosaics on the walls made by Jane. It had a fully stocked kitchen, a comfortable living area with numerous books to read, a notebook of SMA sites, and a nice rooftop to look out over the city for a great view. The large shower always provided nice hot water, the washer and dryer were conveniently near our bedroom, and a lovely courtyard with waterfall outside our door was just like the pictures on the web site. The many plants in the courtyard made it a very relaxing atmosphere.
Casa Roja is located in a pleasant residential neighborhood among friendly locals. We enjoyed staying here very much The walk to town took about 20 minutes, the same to the Mega grocery, with small local grocers near-by.
We can recommend Casa Roja without reservation.

Rate for two weeks is $850. Rate for three weeks is $1,000. Rates are subject to change until reservation is confirmed. CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellations made 90 days in advance receive a 100% refund. Less than 90 days notice will result in the forfeiture of 50% of the rent unless owner is able to re-rent the reservation time period. Renter will then receive a full refund or one prorated based on the portion of the original reservation that is re-rented. April, May, June, September, October, November are discounted 25% off standard rates.
50% deposit required at booking with balance due 30 days prior to beginning of rental period. Checks or credit cards accepted. There is a 1.5% fee for credit card processing.
