Beautiful Lakefront Property in the Blue Ridge Mountains!
average rating of 4.181818 based on 11 reviews

Nice property, not so great customer service

  • 2 of 5

I would like to begin by saying that our family loved our vacation at Lake Blue Ridge and will be returning to the area next year. The location of this property was everything we wanted. It is located in a small cove which offers plenty of privacy and a safe place for the kids to swim away from boat traffic. Our family is originally from Upstate NY and we were looking for the Adirondack experience we grew up with and this property is exactly what we hoped for. The 2 star rating is because of the owners, rather than the property itself.

Upon our arrival on July 19th at 4:30pm after driving more than 8 hours from our home in Central Florida, we were extremely upset to find the property had not been cleaned following the departure of the previous guests. There were dirty towels piled by the front door, piles of dirty dishes in the sink, a dishwasher full of dirty dishes, all 3 beds slept in and unmade, dog food on the floor, empty wine bottles, a cooler full of empty beer cans and dirty cups, as well as garbage piled in the corner which had drawn tiny flies that persisted throughout our stay.

I repeatedly called the phone number we were given when we reserved the property as well as sent emails through the HomeAway app to no avail. I was finally able to reach a rep with VRBO who contacted the owner on our behalf. The owner did call back and apologized and sent a cleaning crew that arrived at 7pm. The 2 ladies spent 2 and a half hours cleaning and did an exceptional job. We were finally able to unpack and settle in at 9:30pm.

While I appreciate that the situation was resolved, our first evening's experience was very upsetting. To add insult to injury, the owners have not returned our refundable deposit and repeated calls and messages have gone unanswered. As a result, we had lost one evening of our vacation as well as our deposit. We have also requested to be reimbursed for the first night's inconvenience, with no response.

I am very disappointed as the property itself is wonderfully rustic and peaceful. It could use a little love as the other reviews regarding the overgrown landscaping are correct and the missing screen on the back porch did allow bugs in as well as a bird that needed to be chased out. I was hoping we had found a place we could return to every summer but as our deposit has not been returned per the contract and our phone calls and messages have gone unanswered, I don't feel comfortable renting this property again

Great location and we had a wonderful time, but property is dated and in need of some improvements.

  • 3 of 5

As a single dad with 4 children (two boys ages 13 and 14, and two girls ages 11 and 12), I was looking for a mountain lake cabin where we all could enjoy being outdoors together and get away from video games, iPhones and computers. This cabin met my expectations as it is located directly on Lake Blue Ridge with a large dock that was a great place to swim and fish. Whenever we were at the cabin, all or most of us were down on the dock swimming or fishing, or just hanging out in the large hot tub, which also was great! The cabin was spacious enough for everyone to feel like they had their own space. My kids loved the place and loved the family vacation!

Constructive feedback is as follows. The games and DVD selections were mostly from 2010 or before and have not been refreshed. The remote controls for the TVs were often missing batteries and therefore did not function. While the screened in back porch was wonderful, the entire screen on the door was missing, so it allowed insects in. The gravel road to the cabin is VERY steep and is quite difficult to go up. Getting down is no problem, but when going up we had to gain momentum from the bottom of the drive and not stop until we got to the top. I am sure a 4 wheel drive vehicle may not have a similar challenge, but it was always an adventure when we had to go up the driveway. The interior of the cabin was very clean, however the dumpster in front of the house was overflowing when we arrived and was never emptied while we were there. It was unsightly and clearly attracted the local wildlife looking for a meal. The Wifi never worked while we were there.

I would rate the overall condition of the cabin as average, but the location is ideal.

Rustic Lake Retreat Needs Repair/Maintenance

  • 1 of 5

First, I want to say that I searched for a way to write this review privately to give the owners a chance to correct the issues. I was unsuccessful. I am a busy person (like most) and need to just get this out. The property is close to town. The drive down to the cabin requires 4 wheel drive or an AWD with good power. The view is beautiful and the place tranquil. Now for the challenges with the property. The grounds were unkept. It was a little creepy arriving between 4 and 6 with high grass/weeds and the entranceway with spider webs. The "screened in porch"was great, except the door screen was missing and I had to put one of my covers over the door. I brought food to grill, only to find the gas grill had no propane tank. I had one of my friends bring a tank for the next night only to find the cables to attach were missing. There was a hornets nest (huge) under the first step going down to the lake. The steps to the lake need debris and leaves blown off for safety. The owners left their boat in the dock. I brought my boat and had to dock outside the covered dock. The lights going down to the lake were partly working and power to the dock did not function. I think this is a nice property and believe with some TLC it could be much better. If I had known the gas grill was an issue I would have brought my own. If I had known the dock wasn't available for my boat I would have made other arrangements. Also, we arrived to the cabin and realized on day 2 the trash bin was almost full from the previous renters. By the end of the week trash had to be put outside the wooden bin. This cant be good as I'm sure bear and deer and other animals exist in the area. I am not a negative person and see the good in everything. I expected much more for this price. I believe the price needs to be dropped for fairness. And please fix these issues before another family is "unpleasantly surprised", as I was.

Owner's Response: We handled this unfortunate situation in less than 2 hours and profusely apologized for the inconvenience. We take all criticism very seriously and will address the concerns. This is our own personal home and we like to enjoy it as well, so please be assured that all will be corrected. We have our own boat in the dock slip but there are 2 adjacent dock spaces on either side of the dock. As for the gas grill, it is directly attached to the gas line for the house. It will not work with a propane tank. Thanks for the feedback.

Cozy, beautifully appointed getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I chose this cabin based upon the unique furnishings and "look" it encompassed. Pleased beyond words! Refreshingly contemporary compared to the typical cabin vibe. Rustic chic! We enjoyed lounging in the different cozy seating areas, watching family movies in the rain. I was head over heels for the outdoor porch's daybed with mounds of fluffy pillows, for peaceful reading after the kids went to bed. My 8 yr old daughter proclaimed the King bed upstairs was the most comfortable bed she'd ever slept in. We all actually slept in every morning which absolutely never happens. We also loved the convenience to downtown Blue Ridge (6 miles away/10 min). An incredible plentitude of shopping and dining options abound in downtown. Just keeps getting better and better! This trip was equal parts total relaxation and family fun excursions. Thanks guys, for sharing your home with us!

Thank you so much for allowing us to rent your beautiful home in Blue Ridge. Our family really enjoyed the homey feel and seclusion. It was private but convenient to shopping.

I would recommend your home as a rental.

Christmas in Blue Ridge

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful holiday vacation spot! We had the house full....fireplace going..and lots of relaxing time with our family. We hiked the AP trail and found a great waterfall....spent a day shopping in the friendly town of Blue Ridge....relaxed on the screened in back porch with a sleeping bed ( even if it got too cold to actually sleep outside) and had the hot tub going to unwind after our long days. The water was down..but still beautiful..making us want to go back in the summer.

Would recommend to anyone who wants to relax, enjoy the mountains and just get away. Thanks for the memories.
