About Sha Sha Higby,Albert Hollander

Albert and Sha Sha love to be near the ocean, and can Albert loves to be handy and fix things in the cottage and Sha Sha Higby makes elaborate costume sculptures and performs in them as pictured here. She has performed all over he world.Sha Sha used to come to Bolinas with her family when she was a child and the house looks likes the dollhouses she made. Albert handcrafted much of the house himself and works in the Bolinas Peoples Natural Food store.

Sha Sha Higby,Albert Hollander purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Sha Sha Higby,Albert Hollander chose The Bay Area

We both love this town as it is rural,we can walk to the ocean every afternoon and yet be in the city in an hour to have whatever culture we need. Albert lived in this house for years before we bought it. It used to be a garage during the urn of he century and was gradually enlarged over the years.

What makes this cottage unique

Cozy evenings. We spent a long time making the house an artistic experience filling it with the textiles we collected during our travels when I was performing. Sha Sha had a Fulbright in India for research in textiles when she and Albert were married. At night I love to take walks to the beach and a loop around the town. It is all very close.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Sha Sha -what a wonderful few days I have had here so far away from the noise of Palo Alto and Stanford University. Thank you for creating this sanctuary,so peaceful and save. I found the spirit much alive in the monarch butterflies that wer just passing through. Thank you for all the care you took in creating this sacred space.

Small, convenient and artsy

  • 3 of 5

Just-a-minute cottage is conveniently located a few blocks from the main beach access in Bolinas and from downtown. It's an easy and pleasant walk and I was spared from needing to drive for our entire 5 day stay. That was a treat!

The cottage is quite small and totally filled with varied art and many many collectables. The bed downstairs in a small cozy cave-like room with a comfy midsized bed. Upstairs, there is a loft open to the downstairs. The bed upstairs is a futon for those who like firm surfaces. There is an additional mattress pad that's available to help make the bed softer, but we never found it. The pillows were varied and all quite comfortable, remarkably so!. There's several different levels to the house with landings and lofts and decks. One must be comfortable going up and down stairs to make full use of the space. The stairway between the main living area and the upstairs loft is more ladder-like and we ended up using the outdoors staircase to go in and out of the upstairs loft with ease. There are helpful "self-serve" info signs all over the house that explain how to use the various items.

The cast iron tub was lovely, the ferns in the bathroom were lovely, the greenhouse like bathroom was fun and quirky but not for those who require a sense of full privacy... as it's viewable to the outside folks who might walk by in your household. The washer dryer were super convenient. The kitchen is very small and stocked adequately. The breaker blew easily when we had too much going on in the kitchen, so plan ahead! :) The property is mostly fenced and worked well for our dogs who needed some containment. There is a way they could have gotten out if they were boundary challenging breeds. They were happy to stay near us and it worked well.

Sha Sha, the owner was traveling for part of our planning time and the first part of our stay. Our communications had significant delays that were inconvenient but understandable given the radical time zone difference. It was frustrating and I wish we'd been told of the reason for the delays ahead of time. (I understand based on the VRBO that the typical turn around response time was 2 hours and this was far from the case.) We went a day plus without being able to use the internet. This was frustrating and limiting and yet it forced us to unplug more than we would have otherwise. Albert dropped by early on in our stay and made sure we were comfy and had what we needed. He was kind sweet and helpful.

Adorable and Rustic

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is a great place for a weekend getaway. We loved its peaceful surroundings and easy accessibility to downtown Bolinas. The outdoor soaking tub is a highlight. Each room is meticulously decorated with Sha Sha's art. Clearly a home made with love.

Magical cottage in Bolinas

  • 5 of 5

Sha Sha's cottage in Bolinas is a magical place. The most beautiful light enters at all times of day through the many windows and skylights, which also makes it feel very connected to nature and the surrounding landscape. It is warm, inviting and cozy. When I arrived, Sha Sha greeted me and showed me around. She was wonderful. The location was perfect for walking around town and to the beach. I'd definitely recommend it and hope to stay there again someday!

Felt right at home

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I were recently enjoying a road trip through California when we stumbled upon the small town of Bolinas. I contacted Sha Sha the day on extremely short notice (approximately 6 hours before we were set to arrive), and she was so accommodating. When we arrived at the house, we were very happy with how cozy and comfortable this place was- complete with instructions on literally every aspect of the house. We knew the house was heated with a wood stove, but we didn't even need it as the weather was so nice, and spent most of the time either outside in secluded backyard or down the road at the beach. We will definitely be staying here again should we find ourselves in Bolinas!

A special birthday week

  • 5 of 5

I had to come to bolinas for an on location photo shoot and it happened to be over spring break and my oldest daughters 15 th birthday, so I brought her with me. I found this cottage so that we could stay local and explore and try to make it a special week even though I had to work. We arrived and were more than pleased with this magical plAce. This cottage is very unique and authentic to the spirit of this part of California! I was in love at first sight upon arrival and so was my daughter. It's very comfortable as well as beautiful. It's a very special place and I hope to come back soon with my other daughter as well.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time out to write. We try to make the house as cozy as possible and a refuge from our busy world with handmade things and our own energy. I actually made dollhouses as a young artist trying to create the perfect artistic environment. This is my biggest doll house! imagine yourself becoming small and fitting inside! It delights us if someone appreciates it and makes it worth sharing with others making them happy. It is a redwood California luxury cabin on the edge of the Pacific with influences from Asia and Europe.

great location, unique

  • 3 of 5

We stayed for a week mid summer. It's located very near the beach entrance but one street away from the hoards of people and cars, giving nice privacy. The owners are very nice and welcoming. Everything in the cottage worked well. All our entertainment and communication needs were met. No doubt, this is a quirky and charming cottage. Lots of interesting stuff all over. On the downside: It would not be safe for little children as the stairs and upstairs are unprotected. In the kitchen, food preparation & storage was difficult because it's overstocked with cookware & dishes & decorative items. Access to the 2nd floor sleeping area is difficult for less than totally nimble adults.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write your response. Actually we have had many little children stay there over the last nine years of renting. And most mothers with toddlers are vigilant anyway use the baby gates provided so they don t go upstairs. alone. Older children adore it as they do a treehouse. Our cleaner has brought her 2 year old everytime she cleans. There are so many pillows to pile up for barcades. There is a normal set of stairs to the upstairs outside by the bathroom. The stairs inside are grandfathered when the house was built in 1910,when it led up to the loft which is what our guest was worried about. But what about ladders that lead to the upper bed two storey beds, they are worse. Yes my mother was a cook, so there are lots of different baking pans, some people ask for turkey roasters, pots to cook oysters in,waffle irons,so we have added it over the years as people have asked. If you need more space to cut and prepare food you can roll in the table by the washing machine to cook. Pictures of the house are all the video. There are many types of people and what they expect and want.
