|Minimum Stay||2 - 3 nights|
Absolute solitude in a stunning setting, near Big Bend National Park.
Off-grid vacation home on Terlingua Ranch.
This cozy one bedroom vacation retreat located on 90 acres offers unparalleled 360 degree views, quiet, and comfort in a remote setting. No nearby lights to interrupt the starlit sky of the Big Bend. Sleeps two people in upstairs bedroom queen, plus a twin/daybed with a high-density foam mattress and an inflatable mattress (maximum 3 people due to composting toilet capacity). The nearest house is nearly a mile away. You can go weeks without a car passing by.
House is light and modern, with bamboo floors, tile, and modern ceiling fans. The retreat is oriented so that at any time of the day, one of the two porches is in the shade. One is screened and the other open.
This is a great vacation rental. An escape from everyday life with a beautiful view of Nine Point Mesa to the north, Jack Eden Mesa to the northeast and Corazones Peaks to the south. The property is true to its desert climate, with dozens of species of cacti, along with ocotillo, yucca, and many varieties of prickly pear, strawberry pitaya, and rainbow cactus in abundance. In addition, bluebonnets, the Texas state flower, and resurrection ferns are found on the 90 acres. The property provides ample opportunities for watching birds and wildlife. We see foxes and deer regularly, and at night frequently hear coyotes howling in the distance.
To explore West Texas, the house is 30 miles from the Big Bend National Park gate; 23 miles to Study Butte/Terlingua ghost town and 35 miles to the famed Lajitas Resort.
PLEASE NOTE: The house is located three-quarter mile along a dirt road from the main ranch paved road, and the dirt road takes you over a rise so that traffic on the paved road is not visible or audible. All vehicles can make the short trip (but as always in this part of the world, have a spare tire just in case). The property's solar and wind energy powers the lights, fans, appliances, and the radio/CD player, while propane gas powers the stove, wall heaters and hot water heater. The composting toilet (Envirolet) is modern and odorless -- not the primitive drop toilet you may know from national or state parks.
We do have a very quiet gas-powered generator for window air conditioners in the hottest months. Thank you for understanding that there is a burn moratorium in Terlingua Ranch, and no campfires are allowed due to dry climate fire danger and fragility of desert vegetation. Finally, the stairs to the upstairs bedroom are slightly steeper than normal and may not be the best for those who have difficulty managing stairs.

The retreat was very easy to reserve and Janet was very responsive to my questions. They provide a code just in case you're driving from somewhere far and get in late so you don't have to worry about late arrivals. I took my son to Big Bend and wanted to stay somewhere unique and really experience the beauty of the area. We drove to big bend each day and on the way had breakfast at a very good restaurant in Ghost Town. We also drove to the McDonald observatory to attend the star party event they do on certain nights which i highly recommend doing that and be sure to reserve in advance. The stars are absolutely beautiful with no light pollution and they have several telescopes for people to look at star clusters, other galaxies, etc. On the way back we had dinner in Alpine which is very neat town and was surprised by the type restaurants they had for such a small town. The house was very clean and i felt very comfortable on the first night which is huge for me to say because i typically have a hard time adjusting to hotels, even nice ones. The home has everything you need and even provide extra things that you may have forgotten for cooking so the owners go well and above making sure their visitors will enjoy their stay. All of the locals who live in the ranch area are very friendly and make you feel like you're apart of the community which was nice considering how some people treat outsiders from big cities.
I plan making a second trip when my son is a little older so we can go on longer hikes and will stay at the same retreat.
Janet, thank you for your hospitality!.
Went out for a few days with my kids (13 and 16) and we all had a great time. The views are amazing. We timed it to the new moon, so the view of stars was beyond stunning. If you like solitude with all the amenities, this is the place to go. I will definitely be back.
You want solitude and peace and quiet? This is absolutely the place! This was my 2nd visit to the Retreat and I will be back for more, for sure. The location is wonderful and the views morning and night are spectacular. The cabin is well-appointed with dishes and cooking utensils. Hit the Cottonwood store (if coming from Big Bend Nat'l Park) and you can stock up on groceries for the full-size fridge and freezer. We grilled hamburgers and enjoyed the open porch watching the sunset. You are off the grid, but there is Wi-Fi. It is just a wonderful oasis in the desert. Thank you for opening up this lovely escape for others to enjoy!
Absolutely delightful! My wife and I spent nearly a week at this retreat, and loved every minute of it. Besides the great views in all four directions (with a screened porch on the east side, an open porch on the west), the house is very well supplied with most all the kitchen stuff you need, nice CD player and some CDs (though it got little use from us who just love the quiet and the subtle sounds of the desert), and a small library with some very good reading material about the Big Bend Area, plus more. September was a bit warm during the day, but certainly not unbearable, and the evenings were very enjoyable. Didn't run the AC at all. Oh, and I have to mention the stars. There's a very good reason the McDonald Observatory is in this area (near Ft Davis), as the sky is absolutely dark except for the stars, the planets, and the glorious Milky Way. And then there's the screened skylight above the bed that cranks open to the outside so you can see the stars and hear the night sounds from your repose. Would definitely stay there again.
My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend at the retreat.the house was perfect and the surrounding area was so peaceful. We used the grill both nights And enjoyed all of the stars. We had breakfast at the Bad Rabbit Cafe and it was awesome! The house was cozy, clean and fit our needs perfectly.
This is a very cute house, loved the screened porch and having a grill made cooking dinner easy. They have a lot of pots, pans etc. if you want to cook. The toilet was ok for the few days that we were there, though a bit awkward to use, especially if you are short. We primarily wanted to explore the Big Bend, so we didn't spend much time at the retreat aside from evenings and breakfast. we just sat outside and enjoyed the views and looked at the stars through the window above the bed. It was breezy so we didn't need to use the AC for those times. It's still a bit of a drive to get to big bend, but better than some other options. The only complaint I had was that the description includes that this property is accessible to all cars. Technically it is, but the gravel road had much bigger and sharper stones than I expected (have never been in this type of terrain; I expected small gravel/dirt). I was terrified driving on this (nearly a mile long) road with my sedan and standard tires. although we made it without popping a tire, I would not have rented this property if I would have known... We considered parking close to the paved road, but aside from potentially not being allowed to park there, carrying everything back and forth to the house would have been exhausting ;)
Please note lists below of activities and amenities. But must stress wonderful hiking in Big Bend N.P. Also please note that stairs up to bedroom are somewhat steep and shallow. They have sturdy railings and non-skid runner and should be fine for most everyone. NO HUNTING OR TARGET PRACTICE.
