Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

Absolute solitude in a stunning setting, near Big Bend National Park.

Off-grid vacation home on Terlingua Ranch.

This cozy one bedroom vacation retreat located on 90 acres offers unparalleled 360 degree views, quiet, and comfort in a remote setting. No nearby lights to interrupt the starlit sky of the Big Bend. Sleeps two people in upstairs bedroom queen, plus a twin/daybed with a high-density foam mattress and an inflatable mattress (maximum 3 people due to composting toilet capacity). The nearest house is nearly a mile away. You can go weeks without a car passing by.

House is light and modern, with bamboo floors, tile, and modern ceiling fans. The retreat is oriented so that at any time of the day, one of the two porches is in the shade. One is screened and the other open.

This is a great vacation rental. An escape from everyday life with a beautiful view of Nine Point Mesa to the north, Jack Eden Mesa to the northeast and Corazones Peaks to the south. The property is true to its desert climate, with dozens of species of cacti, along with ocotillo, yucca, and many varieties of prickly pear, strawberry pitaya, and rainbow cactus in abundance. In addition, bluebonnets, the Texas state flower, and resurrection ferns are found on the 90 acres. The property provides ample opportunities for watching birds and wildlife. We see foxes and deer regularly, and at night frequently hear coyotes howling in the distance.

To explore West Texas, the house is 30 miles from the Big Bend National Park gate; 23 miles to Study Butte/Terlingua ghost town and 35 miles to the famed Lajitas Resort.

PLEASE NOTE: The house is located three-quarter mile along a dirt road from the main ranch paved road, and the dirt road takes you over a rise so that traffic on the paved road is not visible or audible. All vehicles can make the short trip (but as always in this part of the world, have a spare tire just in case). The property's solar and wind energy powers the lights, fans, appliances, and the radio/CD player, while propane gas powers the stove, wall heaters and hot water heater. The composting toilet (Envirolet) is modern and odorless -- not the primitive drop toilet you may know from national or state parks.

We do have a very quiet gas-powered generator for window air conditioners in the hottest months. Thank you for understanding that there is a burn moratorium in Terlingua Ranch, and no campfires are allowed due to dry climate fire danger and fragility of desert vegetation. Finally, the stairs to the upstairs bedroom are slightly steeper than normal and may not be the best for those who have difficulty managing stairs.

Desert Retreat with spectular views and everything you need

  • 5 of 5

We loved this little house. We are not much for hotels and preferred to cook and just hang out after a long day of hiking in Big Bend. It was well worth the drive from the park and we loved just being able to shower outside, cook on the grill and enjoy a couple of drinks while watching the beautiful sunsets. Mornings were just as great with breakfast on the porch and amazing sunrises. Was a little concerned with the AC but the nights and mornings were perfectly cool. This is a great place and well stocked with all the little things so suggest checking it out before spending too much at the local grocery store. Great find for us.

Great time and amazing views!

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I had an amazing laid back weekend and enjoyed our time in Terlingua and Big Bend very much! This is a fantastic secluded property but still close enough if you want to go into Terlingua for anything. We would definitely stay there again!

Heaven on a Stick!

  • 5 of 5

Okay, it's not on a stick, but it got you to read this review, so - Terlingua Ranch Retreat is unbelievable! This little house is about as perfect a desert home as you can get - full kitchen, tiny but completely functional bath, enormous upstairs bedroom with memory foam bed and lovely little sitting area for reading, games and the occasional nap. PLUS huge porches facing east and west to catch every sunrise and sunset. And exceptionally environmentally friendly! Perfect base point for Big Bend, Terlingua, Alpine and all surrounding points of interest - was so great to spend time out and about, then come back to the complete quiet and serenity of no shared bathroom, no shared walls, no noisy neighbors! Best access is with a four-wheel drive vehicle - the road to the cabin is an adventure - but easily accessible otherwise. Views are breathtaking on all four sides - you truly can see for miles. We were very sad to leave!

Beautiful retreat in the mountains!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this wonderful house for three nights while we spent our days hiking through Big Bend. The house was very cozy and comfortable. Perfect for relaxing and watching the sunset over the mountains and then star gazing at night. I would recommend this rental for folks looking to simply relax in comfort and privacy.

Stunning retreat with privacy and comfort

  • 5 of 5

The place was slightly difficult to find at first but the turn by turn directions were very helpful. The key also was a little tricky but we got the hang of it!! The home itself was so comfortable and relaxing. It was pretty breezy and it would have been nice to not hear the windmill blowing but that again was a very minor issue. There was plenty of clean water provided. Ample pots, pans, dishes, towels, blankets....it's all covered. The big Bend literature and guide books were really helpful. The bed was comfortable and the house stayed really cool-we never used any AC or heating, only fans as needed but we mostly just left the doors and windows open. The water got super hot and it was difficult to control the temperature in the shower. We really loved the patio areas and spent a lot of time just relaxing in the chairs watching thunderstorms pass by. Wildlife is abundant and sunsets were breathtaking every night. I loved that it was so close to Big Bend and Terlingua but it's still so private and tucked away in its own wide open space. Overall we were really blown away by the property and the experience that it provided us for our vacation. Thank you so much for sharing your property!! It's a true gem!!!

Please note lists below of activities and amenities. But must stress wonderful hiking in Big Bend N.P. Also please note that stairs up to bedroom are somewhat steep and shallow. They have sturdy railings and non-skid runner and should be fine for most everyone. NO HUNTING OR TARGET PRACTICE.
