Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

Absolute solitude in a stunning setting, near Big Bend National Park.

Off-grid vacation home on Terlingua Ranch.

This cozy one bedroom vacation retreat located on 90 acres offers unparalleled 360 degree views, quiet, and comfort in a remote setting. No nearby lights to interrupt the starlit sky of the Big Bend. Sleeps two people in upstairs bedroom queen, plus a twin/daybed with a high-density foam mattress and an inflatable mattress (maximum 3 people due to composting toilet capacity). The nearest house is nearly a mile away. You can go weeks without a car passing by.

House is light and modern, with bamboo floors, tile, and modern ceiling fans. The retreat is oriented so that at any time of the day, one of the two porches is in the shade. One is screened and the other open.

This is a great vacation rental. An escape from everyday life with a beautiful view of Nine Point Mesa to the north, Jack Eden Mesa to the northeast and Corazones Peaks to the south. The property is true to its desert climate, with dozens of species of cacti, along with ocotillo, yucca, and many varieties of prickly pear, strawberry pitaya, and rainbow cactus in abundance. In addition, bluebonnets, the Texas state flower, and resurrection ferns are found on the 90 acres. The property provides ample opportunities for watching birds and wildlife. We see foxes and deer regularly, and at night frequently hear coyotes howling in the distance.

To explore West Texas, the house is 30 miles from the Big Bend National Park gate; 23 miles to Study Butte/Terlingua ghost town and 35 miles to the famed Lajitas Resort.

PLEASE NOTE: The house is located three-quarter mile along a dirt road from the main ranch paved road, and the dirt road takes you over a rise so that traffic on the paved road is not visible or audible. All vehicles can make the short trip (but as always in this part of the world, have a spare tire just in case). The property's solar and wind energy powers the lights, fans, appliances, and the radio/CD player, while propane gas powers the stove, wall heaters and hot water heater. The composting toilet (Envirolet) is modern and odorless -- not the primitive drop toilet you may know from national or state parks.

We do have a very quiet gas-powered generator for window air conditioners in the hottest months. Thank you for understanding that there is a burn moratorium in Terlingua Ranch, and no campfires are allowed due to dry climate fire danger and fragility of desert vegetation. Finally, the stairs to the upstairs bedroom are slightly steeper than normal and may not be the best for those who have difficulty managing stairs.

impressive off-the-grid location

  • 5 of 5

For those who want to experience a fairly remote desert location with views in every direction, about a half-hour north of Big Bend National Park, and who don't mind the minor differences in daily routine associated with being "off the grid," this is an excellent, comfortable cabin or small house.

The location has quiet, solitude and excellent desert views in every direction. At night, there are a few lights from RVs and cabins sprinkled throughout the desert, but much of the settlement in the valley is hidden by the hills and location on a ridge, and the "neighbors" that do exist are so far away that the location is completely quiet. Sunrises and sunsets are excellent - quiet, but for a few birds perched on the ocotillos, and a vast landscape in which to watch the play of light and shadow. The cabin is well-designed with many windows in all 4 directions, and 2 patios, one facing roughly east and the other west.

The property managers are very helpful and do a very nice job running the place. Janet answered emails very promptly, and we had the pleasure of meeting Daryl when he came to refill the water tank. They provided a detailed PDF with all the instructions for how to operate the cabin, which uses solar, wind & generator power. They've provided pretty much every amenity you might want - it really doesn't feel like a motel or rustic cabin; it feels much more like a comfortable small house. And in spite of being off the grid with respect to electricity, water & sewer, it is "on the grid" with respect to telephone & wi-fi.

From what we saw in the area while staying a week in this cabin, it's hard to imagine many other spots in the area being better. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Owner's Response: Hello Peter, We are very grateful for your careful, thorough, and outstanding review of The Retreat. When we bought the Retreat, we determined to work towards creating exactly the comfortable and homelike cabin in a totally quiet environment, just as you describe it today. It is a place that lives up to its name, a Retreat from the busy world which we all know, only too well. But in your description you hit the nail on the head! We are so happy that you experienced exactly what we hoped our guests would experience. And thank you , too, for adding a shout out to Daryl and Janet. Without them it would not at all be the same! We hope that you will come back to stay at the Retreat, many times! With very best wishes, Dee

Excellent place! Everything was as described.

We were there for 5 days and it was great. No issues with anything. All of the " off the grid " solar, wind and such worked perfectly. Awesome views all around. Sunrise on one porch sunset on the other porch! Would definitely recommend this place.

A true treat!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at this lovely home with family for my 60th birthday. A real gem. So quiet and peaceful.

The home is snug and clean. Had everything we needed. Appreciate the "off the grid" experience.

The drive to Big Bend is not terrible, as everything is a drive in this part of the country. It was a treat to come home after a day of hiking and have an opportunity to relax and watch the stars.

Highly recommend this beautiful retreat!

Veru fun and neat place to stay in the Big Bend area

  • 5 of 5

The retreat was very easy to reserve and Janet was very responsive to my questions. They provide a code just in case you're driving from somewhere far and get in late so you don't have to worry about late arrivals. I took my son to Big Bend and wanted to stay somewhere unique and really experience the beauty of the area. We drove to big bend each day and on the way had breakfast at a very good restaurant in Ghost Town. We also drove to the McDonald observatory to attend the star party event they do on certain nights which i highly recommend doing that and be sure to reserve in advance. The stars are absolutely beautiful with no light pollution and they have several telescopes for people to look at star clusters, other galaxies, etc. On the way back we had dinner in Alpine which is very neat town and was surprised by the type restaurants they had for such a small town. The house was very clean and i felt very comfortable on the first night which is huge for me to say because i typically have a hard time adjusting to hotels, even nice ones. The home has everything you need and even provide extra things that you may have forgotten for cooking so the owners go well and above making sure their visitors will enjoy their stay. All of the locals who live in the ranch area are very friendly and make you feel like you're apart of the community which was nice considering how some people treat outsiders from big cities.

I plan making a second trip when my son is a little older so we can go on longer hikes and will stay at the same retreat.

Janet, thank you for your hospitality!.
