Absolute solitude in a stunning setting, near Big Bend National Park.
Off-grid vacation home on Terlingua Ranch.
This cozy one bedroom vacation retreat located on 90 acres offers unparalleled 360 degree views, quiet, and comfort in a remote setting. No nearby lights to interrupt the starlit sky of the Big Bend. Sleeps two people in upstairs bedroom queen, plus a twin/daybed with a high-density foam mattress and an inflatable mattress (maximum 3 people due to composting toilet capacity). The nearest house is nearly a mile away. You can go weeks without a car passing by.
House is light and modern, with bamboo floors, tile, and modern ceiling fans. The retreat is oriented so that at any time of the day, one of the two porches is in the shade. One is screened and the other open.
This is a great vacation rental. An escape from everyday life with a beautiful view of Nine Point Mesa to the north, Jack Eden Mesa to the northeast and Corazones Peaks to the south. The property is true to its desert climate, with dozens of species of cacti, along with ocotillo, yucca, and many varieties of prickly pear, strawberry pitaya, and rainbow cactus in abundance. In addition, bluebonnets, the Texas state flower, and resurrection ferns are found on the 90 acres. The property provides ample opportunities for watching birds and wildlife. We see foxes and deer regularly, and at night frequently hear coyotes howling in the distance.
To explore West Texas, the house is 30 miles from the Big Bend National Park gate; 23 miles to Study Butte/Terlingua ghost town and 35 miles to the famed Lajitas Resort.
PLEASE NOTE: The house is located three-quarter mile along a dirt road from the main ranch paved road, and the dirt road takes you over a rise so that traffic on the paved road is not visible or audible. All vehicles can make the short trip (but as always in this part of the world, have a spare tire just in case). The property's solar and wind energy powers the lights, fans, appliances, and the radio/CD player, while propane gas powers the stove, wall heaters and hot water heater. The composting toilet (Envirolet) is modern and odorless -- not the primitive drop toilet you may know from national or state parks.
We do have a very quiet gas-powered generator for window air conditioners in the hottest months. Thank you for understanding that there is a burn moratorium in Terlingua Ranch, and no campfires are allowed due to dry climate fire danger and fragility of desert vegetation. Finally, the stairs to the upstairs bedroom are slightly steeper than normal and may not be the best for those who have difficulty managing stairs.

Solitude under the stars
The most engaging surroundings. Three or four geological layers of rock that you can easily walk to. The mountain views look different every few minutes as the light changes. Dark sky let's you see the Milky Way in detail. Very comfortable small house off the grid. East screened porch and open west porch for sun rise and sun set viewing while you eat meals prepared in nice small kitchen or gas grill. Best time I've ever had and never left the place.
Beautiful off-grid house with amazing views
First time visitors to Big Bend area!
Spectacular views with tons of privacy! The house has everything you need to feel at a home away from your home! The scenic drive to and from a Big Bend was only about 30 min to the park entrance. I highly recommend this rental for future travelers!
Beautiful place to stay off the grid!
The house was great for us. We loved the views and stars at night. It was great sitting on either porch with coffee in the morning or a cocktail in the evening! The kitchen very accommodating for cooking especially since restaurants are limited. It is difficult to find at night so I would suggest getting there before dark the first time. The shower is a bit tricky with getting hot water- we had to run sink first. The manager's are very nice and helpful so don't hesitate to call them but leave a message if you need to and remember phone service can be spotty in the region! The overall experience was good for our first trip to Big Bend!
gorgeous view - very clean
The photos don't do justice to the beautiful expansive view from every direction. The place was white glove clean and cute. Getting there is part of the adventure and the directions were good. The stairs to the upstairs bedroom are steep--that wasn't a problem for us, but might be for someone with mobility issues.
Jaw-droppingly wonderful little house in the desert
A nearly perfect little gem, if you like this kind of thing. A tiny cottage (maybe 18X18 feet), but with a second story bedroom (reached by a very steep stairs). Siting on a hilltop surrounded by desert, which is all you can see in all directions. A screen porch faces east, another porch faces west--pick your view depending on wind and time of day. Inside, it's like a houseboat--everything you need, but compact and built to save space. And yet it feels oddly comfortable and spacious. Plus, excellent WiFi, and we had perfect cell phone reception the whole time we were here. So you have the illusion of a "desert solitaire," while reading your morning paper on the laptop. The only minor drawback is the long drive to Big Bend National Park (about an hour to get to Chisos Basin), which was our reason for coming. But that didn't matter--it was all the more special when we returned after each day of hiking. Altogether, a rare experience.
Please note lists below of activities and amenities. But must stress wonderful hiking in Big Bend N.P. Also please note that stairs up to bedroom are somewhat steep and shallow. They have sturdy railings and non-skid runner and should be fine for most everyone. NO HUNTING OR TARGET PRACTICE.
