Overview

About the property

Well equipped 2+ bedrooms, 1.5 baths, sleeps 6

Located on Peaks Island, Maine, the Treehouse is the perfect place to get away from it all. Hop (or drive) on the Casco Bay Line Ferry from the famed Old Port of Portland, Maine and minutes later you will be stepping onto Peaks Island. The Treehouse is a short walk from the ferry dock, located in a quiet part of town. It is close to everything, but offers a place of restful solitude where the breezes blow through the maples & oaks the house was named for. The Treehouse is a fun and informal house with two plus bedrooms, two additional futon sofas, a bath and a half, and all the amenities you could wish for: VCR, DVD, Cable TV, Wireless Internet, W&D, DW, charcoal grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog/cat (with deposit). Available by the week during summer, by the day ( 3-day min.) or week fall & spring, winter by special arrangement.

No car necessary!: The Treehouse is located about a half-mile from the ferry dock on Peaks Island. Since it is within easy walking distance of the ferry, there is no need to bring a car over unless you wish to. There is a parking garage located at the ferry dock in Portland, where you may leave your car. The grocery store, restaurants, beaches, library, indeed all of the island, are easy to walk to - or you can rent bicycles on the island.

About Steve Desterhaft

I spent the first 18 summers of my life on Little Diamond Island. As an adult, I can especially appreciate the conveniences offered by Peaks Island.

Why Steve Desterhaft chose Portland and Casco Bay Area

It's a perfect distance from the village - not too close to the weekend hustle and bustle, but not too far away from a quick run to the store, restaurants, stores, beach, fishing or ferry.

Mixed review. Sylvan setting needs some loving care and a good cleaning service

  • 2 of 5

This rental is in a nice location with friendly neighbors. The owner is well organized, the fenced-in yard is great as is the spacious deck. However, the house is shabby, and needs some cleaning. The entryway is rundown. The carpets and upholstered furniture were old and stained (possibly by owner's generous dog-friendly policy?). All the areas around sinks, counters, and tubs had dirty caulking. Some linens were torn and stained. (I actually washed some quilts). The lower kitchen cupboard is lined with dirty paper. The plastic toaster was melted from over heating. Lastly, the wiring is a bit worrisome with numerous extension cords, odd connections . That said, don't be deterred as this house offers easy access to beach, is roomy, has excellent connectivity, and privacy in a nice neighborhood. I suggest you check with owner about these concerns. We did email owner about theses issues but got no response. Some of These issues are easy fixes and wejust couldn't understand why they weren't attended to. We have rented on the island 3 times and understand the eclectic island cottage but this was a matter of attending to repairs, replacement, and cleanliness.

Owner's Response: There seems to be some inconsistency in this guest review between the owner being “well organized” and the “house is shabby,” which doesn’t make sense. The floor of the entryway is certainly showing some wear, but is nowhere close to needing refinishing. The majority of the carpets were replaced in June 2017 and the furniture, though not new (nor old, for that matter), is NOT stained. Due to the exceptionally rainy and damp year we’ve had on the island, the caulking has begun to discolor and will be replaced immediately after the summer season. In the rental contract and color brochure I send out, it is recommended that guests bring their own linens. That said, all master bedroom linens were replaced in June 2017. I do not throw out linens with small tears. This is not a motel – there are plenty of those on the mainland for $300+ per night. There is only ONE extension cord in use, and it is safely and neatly secured out of the way with tie-wraps. The toaster was replaced as soon as I was informed of the damage (although this guest was not the one who informed me). I freely provide my email and mobile phone number to all guests, and always respond promptly when contacted. Just to be clear, I did NOT receive any emails, phone or text messages from this guest. The only truly accurate description in this review is the word “eclectic.” Yes, this is an eclectic cottage, but most all of them here are, and honestly I wouldn’t want to stay at a Peaks Island cottage that wasn’t. It’s part of the island experience! Before becoming a property owner in 2011, I stayed at many of these vacation rental cottages in the same price range over the years and believe that The Treehouse is a great blend of pet-friendliness, location and amenities, of which I am proud. I stand behind my cleaning crew and my excellent 14 out of 1,309 ranking (top 99%) on VRBO/Homeaway.

Great week on Peaks!

  • 4 of 5

My family stayed here for a full week with our 14 month old daughter. The house was a good size for us and we really enjoyed sitting out on the back deck. There were some minor things that need to be addressed to make it a five star stay. The drywall was chipping in the master bedroom from where a rocking chair has been hitting the wall. We were also disappointed that the fenced in yard had quite a bit of dog poop in it. Cookie sheets would be a great addition to the kitchen supplies too.

Charming hideaway

  • 4 of 5

We have rented a number of houses around the island this was one of our favorites. It's a little tucked away but still an easy walk to Hannigan's or Down Front. There are enough spaces inside and out for our teens to lay low with a book, or for us all to cook or play board games together. We can't wait to go back.
