Half Baths1
Space 1,100 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 90 nights

About the property

Well equipped 2+ bedrooms, 1.5 baths, sleeps 6

Located on Peaks Island, Maine, the Treehouse is the perfect place to get away from it all. Hop (or drive) on the Casco Bay Line Ferry from the famed Old Port of Portland, Maine and minutes later you will be stepping onto Peaks Island. The Treehouse is a short walk from the ferry dock, located in a quiet part of town. It is close to everything, but offers a place of restful solitude where the breezes blow through the maples & oaks the house was named for. The Treehouse is a fun and informal house with two plus bedrooms, two additional futon sofas, a bath and a half, and all the amenities you could wish for: VCR, DVD, Cable TV, Wireless Internet, W&D, DW, charcoal grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog/cat (with deposit). Available by the week during summer, by the day ( 3-day min.) or week fall & spring, winter by special arrangement.

No car necessary!: The Treehouse is located about a half-mile from the ferry dock on Peaks Island. Since it is within easy walking distance of the ferry, there is no need to bring a car over unless you wish to. There is a parking garage located at the ferry dock in Portland, where you may leave your car. The grocery store, restaurants, beaches, library, indeed all of the island, are easy to walk to - or you can rent bicycles on the island.

About Steve Desterhaft

I spent the first 18 summers of my life on Little Diamond Island. As an adult, I can especially appreciate the conveniences offered by Peaks Island.

Why Steve Desterhaft chose Portland and Casco Bay Area

It's a perfect distance from the village - not too close to the weekend hustle and bustle, but not too far away from a quick run to the store, restaurants, stores, beach, fishing or ferry.

Charming hideaway

  • 4 of 5

We have rented a number of houses around the island this was one of our favorites. It's a little tucked away but still an easy walk to Hannigan's or Down Front. There are enough spaces inside and out for our teens to lay low with a book, or for us all to cook or play board games together. We can't wait to go back.

Rustic cottage, conveniently located

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed the island and the atmosphere. Cottage is really cute from the outside, quite rustic and simple on the inside. Probably best suited for 4 people. We were 6 plus a crawling baby. Made do just fine. House is located on a wooded lot, with lots of shade. That must be really nice on a very hot summer day! We had mild late June weather, so didn't get the full benefit of the leafy trees. Island is very pretty, especially on the rocky southern side. I recommend bringing or renting bikes. You will not need your car on the island!

Enjoyed our stay at the Peaks Island Treehouse

  • 5 of 5

The treehouse was a great place to stay! Just a 10 minute walk or 2 minute bike ride from the ferry which was ideal since we arrived at night and also went back and forth to Portland multiple times during our stay, including at night. We had 4 adults and 2 chihuahuas in our group, all of whom were pleased with the Treehouse. Not fancy but clean, comfortable and convenient. We were able to function quite well in terms of what we found at the house for dishes, cookware, bedding, towels, etc.

We visited Peaks as daytrippers a year ago as part of a weekend stay in Portland and had liked Peaks so much at that time that we decided to come back and stay on the island for several days. As expected we enjoyed our second visit very much. Plenty of low key, outdoor type activities on the island and very easy to take the ferry over to Portland for dinner, entertainment etc.

We rented bikes and a doggie trailer for one of the days we were here, which is the ideal way to get around and explore the island. A car is nearly useless here, really. We also enjoyed taking the ferry back and forth to the city several times as part of our Peaks Island experience. Some might view the ferry as just a necessary hassle but I loved it, especially at night. The city lights are awesome from the top ferry deck! One day we went over to Portland for world class coffee and baked goods in the morning, returned to Peaks for the day then back over to the city for a superb Italian dinner, the finest gelato anywhere and finally the last ferry of the night back to Peaks. It's fascinating to be in a terrific little city with so much to choose from and yet be on an island. Take advantage of this very unique experience! If you are looking for an outdoorsy, fairly non-touristy vacation where you can enjoy the island lifestyle yet have access to a city full of first rate restaurants, cafes, theater, etc, this is it! Peaks Island, Portland and the Treehouse won't disappoint.

By the way the ferry service is prompt and efficient, at least in September when we visited. Much more hectic in July and Aug I would imagine.

Restful and fun stay at the Peaks Island Treehouse

  • 4 of 5

My friends and I, and my dog, enjoyed our stay at the Treehouse. In the hottest days of summer it was a shady, cool retreat, within walking distance to beaches where we all went swimming. The house had what we needed for summer meals, quiet fans for the hottest afternoons, and a good TV for watching the Olympics. The fenced yard worked well for traveling with my dog, and the neighborhood was quiet.

The Treehouse was great!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with a group for vacation and a wedding on the island. The house was everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. Steve was also very helpful in the process. I definitely recommend the Treehouse.
