Awesome sunsets, ocean breezes, and quiet starry nights await you at this very clean and cozy 1 bedroom home situated 400 feet up on two and a half acres in the rolling hills of the Kohala Coast. From here you are only minutes away from the finest beaches (such as Hapuna), water activites (such as sailing, fishing, whale watching, great snorkeling and diving), dining and golfing the Big Island has to offer.

Hale O Pueo is well built, light, airy, and located where the sun shines 350 days a year. This tranquil, end of the road property is lavishly landscaped with a variety of tropical flowering plants and trees. Comfortably furnished living room framed by night blooming jasmine and lush bamboo, opens out through sliding glass door onto the covered lanai. Luxuriate here in the serene setting and balmy ocean breezes as you swing in the hammock or nestle into the tropical furnishings.

Wake up in your queen sized bed to the morning sun glistening on the ocean below as you look out the large sliding door. Step out onto the covered lanai to take in the expansive, unobstructed views of the rolling hills, ocean, coastline and nearby Hualalai Volcano as you plan your day in paradise.

Retreat in No. Kohala

Hale O'Pueo is the perfect retreat in No. Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii. It rests up in a rural area of the island close to the Northern tip and the wonderful town of Hawi, and within 10 miles of diverse and active Waimea. You can plan day trips to Kailua-Kona (and Walmart/Costco...), the beautiful Hilo-town and the Hamakua Coastal drive, or just hang at Hapuna Beach and body surf. When you return to your piece of paradise, the peace overtakes your soul, you can shower outdoors and prepare the perfect meal in the large and fully equipped kitchen. WiFi is available, gorgeous sunsets from your lanai and your favorite games on the large-screen TV, or you can just listen to the abundant bird life and feel the Hawaiian breezes. Kalia has built a lovely home-away-from-home and I, for one, will surely return. Mahalo.

Wonderful stay in Kawaihae at Hale O Pueo!

If you're looking for easy access to the best Kohala beaches without the resort vibe, this is a fantastic option. Owner Kalia was welcoming, provided great info on local spots, and had everything we needed (beach chairs, umbrella, snorkel gear, etc.) ... even fresh fruit from the trees in the garden. You're up on an arid hillside in North Kohala overlooking the water from the bedroom, but the landscaped grounds are lush and beautiful, with a mix of flowering plants, fruit trees, and cactus. This is not a standalone unit, but is connected by one wall to the owner's residence. Still very private. It's off the grid, but there were no issues with hot water or electricity. If you want an A/C-cooled environment, this might not be the place for you--there are fans in the bedroom and living room and plenty of screened doors, but the breeze outside doesn't circulate through the bedroom all that well on really hot days. Other than that, we thought it was a fantastic spot, and there are lots of great little places to eat down the hill in Kawaihae if you want to skip the South Kohala resort restaurants. Owner's Response: It has been a sincere priviledge to offer this home to so many wonderful and grateful guests over the past decade plus. I am very thankful that I built this home to accommodate the environment and climate here, with one foot thick concrete walls, plenty of windows and sliders to capture the persistent breezes here at 700', and large fans in the main rooms. Even though it rarely gets above 85 degrees at any time during the year at this elevation, and with the low humidity due to the dry conditions, the thick walls and the well above top to bottom insulative qualities make it hard to imagine a more suitable and comfortable home for this part of the island. As can be seen from my reviews over the past 10+ years, and what guests have shared with me personally along the way, this is the first I have heard anyone share a differing perspective regarding temperature, ventilation, etc.

Amazing stay in Big Island!

My wife and I spent 4 days at the house with our 2 yrs old daughter and we loved it!

Amazing location with stellar views and stargazing at night, super comfy bed, and everything you need in the house (fully equipped kitchen, washing machine/dryer, etc) and hawaian feel (not a tourist trap). Definitely recommend it!

A Restful Paradise

This superb property surpassed my expectations. The location is one of the best on the island, north beyond the hazy air (caused by the erupting volcano) of Kona, in the storm shadow of another ancient volcano, so all is sunny and peaceful even in the case of weather coming in from the east. You need a car to get up there, but once there you are in an oasis surrounded by open space so it is extremely quiet. Views to all sides are of Kalia’s beautiful landscaping and it feels like you are alone there.

Some of the best beaches for swimming and snorkeling on the island are 10 minutes away by car in North Kohala. In little Kawaihae Harbor, even closer, outfitters are now offering manta ray scuba/snorkeling, sailing trips and dolphin swims, which I was expecting to have to go all the way to Kona to do.

The house itself is spacious, like an apartment, with windows on three sides and a fully equipped kitchen. The shower is outdoors, a luxury for those from wintry homes on the mainland. Kalia answered all our questions and solved all our problems immediately. She has lived in Hawaii for decades and there is not much she doesn’t know about the island. However she is not intrusive and we actually saw less of her than we would have liked! I was curious to learn more about the construction of the property – it’s off grid and you are invited to save compost for the garden.

A drive up the coast to Hawi at the northern tip of the island and returning back on the high road to Wimea makes a good day outing. We stayed in a guest house in Volcano for two nights. The drive down the coast road on the east side of the island with a stop at the Botanical Garden took all day but was well worth it. We hiked the volcano the next day and were glad not to have to get in the car and come all the way back afterwards. The third day we explored the coast of Puna (lava fields and hot pools of seawater, heated by the volcano, along the coast), before returning on the saddle road.

We were there for two weeks and it took that long to slow down and notice all there was to see there – the birds, the weather, the trees are all different. We will be back, hopefully someday soon, to stay even longer.

Heavenly

We stayed here during our recent low-key elopement. Couldn't have asked for a better setting to relax and just appreciate life. The views, the sunsets... surreal and splendid. We hope to return and possibly rent the neighboring house as well to accommodate family. The whole property is fantastic -- huge cacti, blossoming shrubs and plenty of sunshine. Can be windy! (But it's refreshing.) A fantastic spot if you enjoy the desert aesthetic and want to dry off a bit from the more humid parts of the island. Also: convenient location for visiting great beaches. Kawaihae is small but still has some good food and a couple of friendly shops.
