Please see our amenities section for more details about our home. Our reviews only tell half the story. Nearly everyone says "Your pictures don't do the beauty of this house and view justice".
We purchased this property for a vacation home rental. We totally remodeled the home from the roof down and hardwood throughout, contemporary tile in the kitchen and bath with granite and stainless, plus a paved drive and large parking area. The new Craftsman Timber porch was competed in 2016.
Tom Hopkins purchased this house in 2006
Our pricing is considerably lower than any of the upscale homes in the area.
The cost of an upscale motel in the area is approximately the same as ours.....FOR ONE ROOM without two more bedrooms, very large living and dining area, full service kitchen and two baths, plenty of secure parking and one of the most beautiful views in the area. It is very close to everything you need like food, gas, shopping and the fun things you come to enjoy.
Our home is beautifully appointed including a collection of clocks made by local artist Carol Mayer. We enjoy sharing our home with our guests but due to the fragile nature of this collection and other amenities , our minimum age of guest is 16 years old.

This home was everything we were expecting (and More!) We came for the Gem mining, but found so much more. Each evening we came home, we actually Felt at Home! The place was CLEAN, roomy, quiet neighborhood, just beautiful! Beside gem mining, we went White Water Rafting(our first time), and took an overnite trip to Wilmington to see the Battleship North Carolina (Awesome!!). Each nite we sat on the deck and watched the sun set over the mountains, then we had the Ping Pong Competitions (the youngsters won). This was our first vacation rental, and if all other owners are as Friendly, Helpful, Gracious, and Considerate as Tom & Carol, we will definitly rent again! If we are ever back in NC we would surely stay here again!
We enjoyed our stay here. The house is beautiful and the view is amazing. The owners are very friendly and the house is very clean! The only downfall is we didn't feel like we had privacy as the owners live below the house. We felt like we were being entirely too loud with 3 kids in the cabin. They never complained that we made too much noise but we felt like we had to make the kids tiptoe so we didn't disturb the owners. I wouldn't call this place kid friendly. There is a drop off right outside the front door that we were worried about with our 3 year old. We had a good time and love NC.
We arrived Saturday evening to a beautiful home and were greeted by the owners, Tom and Carol. They are a wonderful couple, made us feel so welcome and when we walked into their beautiful home, we were beyond pleased. Everything was clean, updated, comfortable and had lots of neat clocks that Carol makes. The view of the mountains and the sounds of the river from the balcony was the icing on the cake. WOW... doesn't do it justice !!! We came to Franklin to do our family tradition of Gem Mining at Cherokee Ruby Mine. We have been going for years and this home was the best yet. Close to town and close to the ruby mine. We met lots of wonderful and fun people mining and we all found some great gems. It was just a great family get away and the time in this beautiful home went way too fast. For our last night, we went to a Mexican restaurant in town that Tom and Carol recommended and it was a great way to end out stay in the mountains. We will definitely plan to stay there again...hopefully next year. Thanks so much Tom and Carol !!!
We have rented homes via VRBO for over 12 years and feel we have gained enough knowledge to write pertinent and unbiased reviews of the homes we have stayed in. It can be overwhelming at times trying to find a home that fits your needs, so reviews can be extremely helpful. First I want to comment on the owner Tom, never have I met a man so genuine and kind. He was very helpful in ways that go above and beyond expectations. Just knowing I was renting from someone who was caring and attentive made our vacation that much less stressful. The house was spectacular! The photos really do not do it justice. The home was immaculately clean, well stocked with everything you would need to cook/bake/bbq. We only used the bedroom downstairs and the bed was soft and comfortable. Lots of extra pillows and blankets are stocked away for your use as well. As detailed in the homes description, all the modern conveniences you are likely accustomed to are present in this home; fast WiFi, Satellite TV and free use of a land line phone if your cell service struggles. Stepping out onto the full length deck offered a spectacular long range mountain view. Add the sounds of the rushing water from the Little Tennessee River and the ambiance is unmatched. The added bonus is the sun sets right behind the mountains! Lots of different kinds of seating is available to suit anyone. We brought ohttp://my.ur motorcycle and this home is situated smack in the middle of "Moonshiner 28", one of the greatest motorcycle roads in this area. To the North is Cherokee, NC and the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smokey Mountain Park and the Tail Of The Dragon and Cherohala Skyway. To the South is the Waterfalls along Moonshiner 28 and some amazing riding. To the West is Wayah Road and some of the greatest switchbacks you'll ever ride! We had some rough weather and Tom was kind enough to let me keep the bike in the garage. He also provided us everything we needed to wash the bike! Another huge plus is the road to the home is fully paved and the parking was flat and ample enough for the car and the trailer. The city of Franklin is about 5 minutes away. We ate at a Mexician place called "Mi Casa", Don't be fooled by the looks of it, the food was amazing! Communications with Tom was easy before and during our stay. We've even been in touch since! If you are looking for a very clean and comfortable home, you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend Tom and his beautiful home.
Tom was our guide to my family's introduction to North Carolina Fly Fishing. Actually it was our first time fly fishing and we couldn't have enjoyed it more. Tom was very knowledgeable in the local area and put us on fish right away. My wife and 9 year old son was part of our group so he suggested we go to where there were more fish but they might not be as big as we would like. This worked out perfect since we caught plenty and it kept my son's attention. We thoroughly enjoyed Tom and can't wait to go back next year. Thanks for the experience Tom!
Had the pleasure of staying with Tom and Carol with my 3 kids this year in their lovely home. Their pictures completely say it all. Upstairs even has a little loft area with even more books to choose from. Wifi and satellite for those who can't do without. Close to gem mining and we went Carolina Outfitters for white water rafting and horse back riding. Even a day of fly fishing with Tom. The house itself was well stocked with cookware and basic essentials like spices and the views were amazing. Tom and Carol were excellent hosts and we would definitely stay here again.
Our Cowee Woods property is 5 miles north of Main Street Franklin, NC just off Hwy 28....the foot hills of the Smokies. Minutes from many gem mines. It is an easy drive to Bryson City, Cherokee, Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Sylva, Murphy, Nantahala etc. The access road is short and paved, as is our driveway and parking area.
There are festivals and art/music events from spring to winter. Mountains, beautiful falls, lakes, whitewater and fishing rivers, snow skiing 30 minutes away in the winter. We have remodeled and decorated our home to make you feel like it is your second home. It is not rustic, but it is furnished in such a way to make you feel like you've been here before. The gas fireplace is a welcome treat on the chilly months. The view across the valleys of the Nantahala Mountains and overlooking the Little Tennessee River
The owner, Tom Hopkins, is a fly fishing Guide on the Tuckaseegee River, Pigeon River, Oconoluftee River. See wwwwesternncflyfishingguidecom.
