About Tom Hopkins

We purchased this property for a vacation home rental. We totally remodeled the home from the roof down and hardwood throughout, contemporary tile in the kitchen and bath with granite and stainless, plus a paved drive and large parking area. The new Craftsman CedarTimber porch was competed in 2016.

Tom Hopkins purchased this house in 2006

Why Tom Hopkins chose Franklin

Our pricing is considerably lower than any of the upscale homes in the area.

The cost of an upscale motel in the area is approximately the same as ours.....FOR ONE ROOM without two more bedrooms, very large living and dining area, full service kitchen and two baths, plenty of secure parking and one of the most beautiful views in the area. It is very close to everything you need like food, gas, shopping and the fun things you come to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

Our home is beautifully appointed including a collection of clocks made by local artist Carol Mayer. We enjoy sharing our home with our guests but due to the fragile nature of this collection and other amenities .

Not pet friendly. Tom Hopkins is a fly popular fly fishing guide for the Tuckaseegee River, Nantahala River, and The Smoky Mountain National Park as well as Cherokee. Tom also guides on the trout streams near Highlands NC and Cashiers NC. To also make reservations please see contact information on this site or go to wwwwesternncflyfishingguidecom. This site will not allow me to use periods in another web address. Motorcyclists dream! The road leading to our Cowee Woods Drive is called Hellbender or more recently Moonshiner 28. Moonshiner 28 will take you to The Tail of the Dragon, about an hour +- away. Check "Tall of the Dragon Maps" to see how many motorcycle day trips are near our home. We have a huge parking area for motorcycles and trailer. There are facilities for washing bikes right at the house. I am a motorcyclist and love motorcycling guests, with whom, sometimes I ride. We are Gem Mine Capital of the World. Many mines from 100 yards to 20 minutes away.

"Gem" of a Home

  • 5 of 5

This home was everything we were expecting (and More!) We came for the Gem mining, but found so much more. Each evening we came home, we actually Felt at Home! The place was CLEAN, roomy, quiet neighborhood, just beautiful! Beside gem mining, we went White Water Rafting(our first time), and took an overnite trip to Wilmington to see the Battleship North Carolina (Awesome!!). Each nite we sat on the deck and watched the sun set over the mountains, then we had the Ping Pong Competitions (the youngsters won). This was our first vacation rental, and if all other owners are as Friendly, Helpful, Gracious, and Considerate as Tom & Carol, we will definitly rent again! If we are ever back in NC we would surely stay here again!

Owner's Response: These folks, as well as some others, were kind enough to respond to my request write a review for us......a year after their stay. I hadn't asked any one until recently to leave comments on their stay. Our Guest Log at the house is full of this type of comment. That Guest Log is the greatest joy of owning a vacation home for others. Tom and Carol

Beyond my expectations

  • 5 of 5

I booked this VRBO for my daughter and me to spend a weekend together as she is currently in boarding school. We fell in love with this beautiful home and especially the warm welcome of the hosts! The home was super clean , tastefully designed and so very cozy and comfortable for our needs. I loved the wood bed upstairs ! The view of the he river and the mountains is absolutely spectacular and very relaxing. The home has everything you need !!! The home is easily accessible and very private. We will go back for sure and hopefully we will have time for some fly fishing lessons!! Nice Job Tom and Carol!!!!

Peaceful location easy to relax and enjoy the sound of nature. A unique experience. Tom and Carol welcomed us and made our vacation an unforgettable experience by not only opening up there home but also providing information on the best attractions in the surrounding areas.

A Piece Of Heaven....

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautifully decorated and in such a peaceful setting. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching the river flow by. Tom and Carol are Angels, as well as, perfect hosts. They don't mind answering any questions and make you feel as though their home is yours. Gem mining was just a few miles away. We traveled to Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Bryson City and a few other towns. This would be a home that I highly recommend. Shelby, the greeter, was a delight. Thanks again for sharing your lovely home with us!

A Gem!!

  • 4 of 5

The owners and the home are lovely! The view is great, the beds are comfy and the home is cozy. We loved it! And there is a gem mine close by where we enjoyed our first experience of panning for gems. That was a delightful experience! We also enjoyed a drive to Highlands, which included a stop at Dry Falls. Beautiful!

Beautiful get away and close to town if needed..

  • 4 of 5

The four of us thoroughly enjoyed the house, gardens and the wonderful sounds of the river and birds. After enjoying the gem show in town we opted to chill and eat back at the house. Thanks for opening your home for others to enjoy. We were very fascinated by all the clocks!

Car: recommended

Our Cowee Woods property is 5 miles north of Main Street Franklin, NC just off Hwy 28....the foot hills of the Smokies. Minutes from many gem mines. It is an easy drive to Bryson City, Cherokee, Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Sylva, Murphy, Nantahala etc. The access road is short and paved, as is our driveway and parking area.

There are festivals and art/music events from spring to winter. Mountains, beautiful falls, lakes, whitewater and fishing rivers, snow skiing 30 minutes away in the winter. We have remodeled and decorated our home to make you feel like it is your second home. It is not rustic, but it is furnished in such a way to make you feel like you've been here before. The gas fireplace is a welcome treat on the chilly months. The view across the valleys of the Nantahala Mountains and overlooking the Little Tennessee River

The owner, Tom Hopkins, is a fly fishing Guide on the Tuckaseegee River, Pigeon River, Oconoluftee River. See wwwwesternncflyfishingguidecom.
