|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Enjoy a secluded lakeside retreat in down east Maine. Relax on the shores by yourself. No neighbors are near or within sight of the cabin. Spend your quiet time watching the water, paddling the canoe, enjoying nature, or resting in the rocking chairs on the porch. The cabin looks down the full length of the lake and rests a mere 15 feet from the water's edge. Take the canoe to explore the pristine lake. Few boats or people explore this lake, because there isn't a great boat landing on this lake.
A diner/convenience store is only 7 miles away. Plus, you have excellent ocean and hiking access in Bar Harbor (2 hours), Machias (1.5 hours), Winter Harbor/Schoodic Point (1 hour), or greater Ellsworth (1 hour). Guests will have a custom guide to great places to visit while in the area.
You'll walk a nice hiking trail one-third of a mile through the woods to reach the cabin. As you reach the cabin, the blue lake, a humble log cabin, and a sweeping view greets you immediately.
Farmers Markets: If you like local food, be sure to visit the fun farmers markets there area. Travel about an hour to the Winter Harbor on Tuesday from 9-noon. Be sure to drive to the top of Schoodic head, walk along Schoodic Point while you are there. But this market is available in July and August only. On Monday and Thursday, the Ellsworth Market is an hour away. On Saturday, you can go to the Ellsworth or Machias Farmers Market. Guests can have a fun and educational experience with downeast Maine farmers and artists. You should also know that my wife provides tasty and authentic Indian food at the Saturday Ellsworth market and the Tuesday Winter Harbor market.
Nearby Hiking Trails: The cabin is close to numerous hiking trails. Lead Mountain is just a few miles north of the cabin. Schoodic Mountain is in Sullivan (1 hour southwest of the cabin) and has trails going up the east and west peaks. Caribou, Catherine, and Tunk Mountains are all north of Schoodic Mountain. Quoddy Head in Lubec (1.5 hours away) offers great ocean-side hiking along beautiful cliffs. Great place! Plus, there is a great network of hiking and camping trails along the ocean in Cutler. Cutler is an hour from the cabin. You will need to travel east of Machias to visit Cutler. Guests will have a nice hiking guide.
The road to the cabin is a dirt road. The owner personally maintains this road. You will need to travel slowly in places. A sports car or heavily burdened car is not recommended. A normal car will be fine.
I'm an avid hiker, canoeist, and explorer, although the 'normal' life keeps me quite occupied.
Christian Gilbert purchased this cabin in 2006
When I was young, my grandfather was a park ranger at a campground 7 miles in the woods. This cabin reminds me of time with grandpa at this remote campground when I was young.
Peace, quiet, nature, calmness, seclusion, water, simplicity, trees
Very nice off the beaten path log cabin....perfect true cabin experience,,peace and quiet..love the delayed echo.......even once buy own camp will come back here!!
This is a great place and just what I was looking for. The log cabin is great, it is a classic style made from real natural logs. There are two skylights that bring in extra light during the day and the beautiful lake is 25ft in front of the cabin. I was there in mid October and it was very quiet both day and night, this place is far enough from the highways and not on a current flight path and the quiet is awesome. When you escape civilization to a place like this actually takes a couple days to fully realize the wonderful lack of noise. The fishing was great and Christian, the owner is excellent and very helpful – I plan to return.
I picked this cabin because I wanted a private lakefront getaway, and this exceeded my expectations.
The owner is sweet, knowledgeable, and exceedingly accommodating - He offered to pick up veggies, meat, and cheese from local farmers' markets - And even baked the chicken for us! Being greeted with a cooler of fresh veggies, goat cheese, and a baked chicken was an amazing way to start the weekend.
The cabin is clean and has everything you need - Bed, cooking stove, fireplace... The wooden canoe is beautiful and a sweet ride on the lake.
The lake is gorgeous - You wake to loon calls and sun across the lake, which is mere steps away from the cabin. The water is clean and fresh and perfect for swimming and bathing, though don't forget your water shoes or water sandals! The lake bottom is a bit sharp and rough for tender-foots like us.
There is a short hike from where you park to the cabin, and the trail is not flat - Just take heed, especially if the ground is damp!
Everything is as it is described in this post, though the pictures hardly do it justice, and more - HIGHLY recommended if you're looking for a woody getaway.
The cabin is just what we were looking for a remote rustic no frills get away. The cabin is quaint and has most everything you could need. The owner is very accomodating and in general a very nice person. He greeted us and took us to the cabin. We enjoyed the small hike to the cabin and the privacy it offers. Even our 13 yr old daughter admitted she didn't want to leave. You can canoe, fish, tae walks through the woods, the scenery is breathtaking and there is not one photo that can capture the beauty of this cabin and its surroundings. The view of the lake is amazing and wide open in front of the cabin.
We plan on returning many times for weekend and weeks at a time. If you really enjoy nature and the outdoors this is the place for you!! We are going to bring some extra's next time to leave for the next visitors. There were candles and many extras available from the owner and previous visitors, so next time we'd like to bring a few extras to leave for the next guests. Our dog had the best time running around , dipping into the lake along with our daughter. The sounds of the local loon and other birds and critters at night was like listening to natures orchestra from the porch, while enjoying our fire in the fire pit. The owner has plenty of wood for fires inside and out.
I would absolutely recommend this cabin to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and is looking for a remote no frills experience, but you'll feel the frills your looking for at this cabin.
The listing is very accurate but does begin to uncover what your eyes will upon arriving at the cabin, again breathtaking!!
The cabin is clean and well maintained and again the owner is extremely accomodating and a very nice down to earth person,.
The only dont I can think of is don't miss this opportunity to experience nature at its best! If your expecting a paved walk in, inside plumbing, and room service this would not be the place for you. We will be back again and again!!!
We live in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with views that are hard to beat, but its so commercialized, this is the perfect cure that gets away from all of that!
Plan your secluded summer vacation by these pristine waters. Walk just one-third of a mile to reach this secluded lakeside cabin. This cabin provides guests with easy access to mountains, ocean cliffs, beaches, and interesting fishing villages. Bar Habor and Acadia is 2 hours away, but guests will have a custom-made guide to explore other areas of downeast Maine.
You have a lot to see whether you visit the nearby towns, or just spend time at the cabin. You can catch fish, go swimming, paddle the lake in the canoe, explore the forests, or check out the dirt roads and trails. If you need a meal cooked for you, the Airline Snack Bar is 7 miles from camp. There are very few camps on the lake, which makes this cabin special.
The road to the cabin is a dirt road. The owner personally maintains this road. You will need to travel slowly in places. A sports car or a heavily laden car is not recommended. A regular car will be fine.
